Encouraging and developing reading - Guided Reading
At St. Leonard’s we are committed to developing the skills needed for reading through teacher led guided reading sessions. These sessions are aimed at supporting and challenging the children in their ability to read and comprehend a range of texts. Guided reading sessions consist of a small group of children read-ing a text with their class teacher. The teacher's role is to support the children in developing their fluency, pace and understanding of fiction and non-fiction texts. Whilst one group reads with the teacher other groups within the class will be working through a carousel of activities aimed at enhancing their Literacy skills. Through these sessions each child's reading is assessed giving the class teacher a clear picture of the child's ability and understanding and enabling them to challenge and support effectively.
Home Readers
The purpose of home reading books is to encourage independence. These texts should complement your child's reading and allow them to read and comprehend texts easily. We have found that children who are confident with reading a specific text enjoy returning to that text and from doing this will build on skills like expression, self-correction and a higher level of comprehension.
Each week your child will be given one or two books at the class teacher's discretion. Each stage in the scheme consists of a set of core reading books and additional story books. We also have books from Project X and other reading book publishers. Your child will be given a reading book from the higher stage when they have read most of the core books and when the class teacher feels your child is confident in the reading and comprehension of the stories in that stage.
It is important that children read for understanding and comprehension.
Library
Our library books are all catalogued within the system called Junior Librarian.
The children are given access to the school library. We subscribe to Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress which require the children to login. If you can’t find your log in details please contact you child's teacher.
The children enjoy having the freedom to choose texts that interest them. Each child chooses 1 book and can return it for another the following week. Children can keep a book for longer if they so wish. This initiative will also be offered to key stage 1 in the very near future.
Learning Challenge
As each year group covers a range of exciting topics throughout the year, we also encourage children to bring in any books that link with their current Learning Challenge so that these can be shared with their peers.
Book Club
We are introducing a book club which takes place every Wednesday lunchtime. At the moment this club is offered to Key Stage 2 children. These sessions give children the opportunity to explore different genres and build their love of reading through sharing experiences of different stories and characters. We hope to extend this very popular club to each year group including our younger children in the future.
Some hints and tips for parents to help encourage their children to engage more in reading.
If a child is unable to read five or more words on a page of a book it is fair to assume that it is too difficult for them. There is nothing more disheartening than giving a child a book to read that they struggle with and this will take away the enjoyment of the story.
The following are some suggestions that parents may find useful to try to encourage their child to read:
1. Reading to your child - This improves listening skills, broadens interest in books and improves vocabulary. It also models expression and use of punctuation when reading.
2. Shared and supported reading - Encourage your child to join in by :
• Discussing the books content and asking your child to describe what is happening or might happen or retell the story in their own words.
• Running your finger along the line of print as you read to help your child see what you are reading to aid familiarity of the words.
• Suggest your child joins in by reading some words.
• Selecting two or three words or main characters to talk about.
• Allow a child time to work out words.
• Helping with accuracy - encourage your child to check guesswork by cross checking letters in a word.
3. Over learning - Going over information and who the characters are or re-reading important information helps to reinforce understanding of the story if your child has a poor short-term memory. This also helps to build familiarity of the vocabulary used within the book.
4. Silent Reading - Young children need time to browse and more skilled readers need independence and time to develop fluency but you can check comprehension by asking your child about the story.
5. Fun, fun, fun! -
Above all reading should be a pleasure:
• Make sure you are both comfortable and relaxed.
Make reading part of your children's daily routine and not something they 'have' to do.
Use different voices and role play for the characters.
When I am reading something I can use the following strategies to help me:
I use the pictures to help me.
I sound out / blend words I don’t
know.
I look for smaller words inside
words.
I can break words down in to
syllables.
When I am reading I can use the following things to help me:
I use punctuation to help me
make sense of what I am read-
ing.
I go back and read a word or a
sentence again if I don’t
understand it.
I read on to see if I can work
out the meaning of the word I
don’t know.
I listen to what I am reading
to see if it makes sense.
When I am reading something I can use the following strategies to help me:
I check that I am right by going back
to look at the words carefully.
I can tell when I've made a
mistake and go back to try and
put and out it right.
I ask questions to help me
with my reading if I don’t
understand.
I talk through my ideas,
thoughts and feelings about
what I’m reading
When I am reading something I can use the following strategies to help me:
I think about what might happen.
When I read I imagine what is
happening and create a
picture in my mind.
I use words I can see around
me or that I have read before.
It is good to re read books.
Non-fiction, comics, graphic
novels, poetry, magazines and
leaflets -
Reading is reading and it is all good.
