October 1, 2017 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY

IN ORDINARY TIME

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 2 October 1, 2017

PAGE 3 Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario GOD’S WAYS

In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordi-nary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The senti-ments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a di-rect reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The LORD’s way is not fair!”(Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guar-anteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us an-other opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love.

Question of the Week

First Reading — When the wicked turn away from their wickedness they have committed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28). Psalm — Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading — Consider others as better than your-selves; look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1-5]). Gospel — Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32).

Question for Children: How do you show your love for Jesus by doing what he asks, even when it is difficult for you?

Question for Adults: How and when were you like each of the sons in the Gospel?

Monday: Zec 8:1-8; Ps 102:16-21, 29, 22-23; Mt 18:1-5, 10 Tuesday: Zec 8:20-23; Ps 87:1b-7; Lk 9:51-56 Wednesday: Neh 2:1-8; Ps 137:1-6; Lk 9:57-62 Thursday: Neh 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12; Ps 19:8-11; Lk 10:1-12 Friday: Bar 1:15-22; Ps 79:1b-5, 8-9; Lk 10:13-16 Saturday: Bar 4:5-12, 27-29; Ps 69:33-37; Lk 10:17-24 Sunday: Is 5:1-7; Ps 80:9, 12-16, 19-20; Phil 4:6-9; Mt 21:33-43

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Eucharistic Prayer IV is, like Eucharistic Prayer III, a fresh composition from the 1960s, based on a prayer from the tradition of the ancient church of Alexandria. It has an interesting structural feature. The new prayers all nod to-ward the East with the epiclesis, or calling down of the Spirit, over the gifts. In this prayer the Spirit is asked to come down again, after the consecration, to make holy the communicants who “partake of this one Bread and one Chalice that, gathered into one body by the Holy Spirit, they may truly become a living sacrifice in Christ to the praise of your glory.” This beautiful phrase is well worth meditating on. What is the goal of your reception of Holy Communion today? The preface for this Eucharistic Prayer is firmly at-tached to the prayer, and the directives for using the prayer anchor it to Ordinary Time. It is not intended to be an option if the Mass has a proper preface of its own, like a funeral, a Lenten weekday, or a great feast. It is not of-ten used these days, in part because of these limitations. At first, it was suggested that this prayer was better suited to small groups of people who were well educated in scripture. This was kind of an odd stipulation, especially since its images are so beautiful and worthy of attention. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Tradition

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Blessed Giles of Assisi, in the thirteenth century, wrote, “No one can attain the knowledge of God but by humility. The way to mount high is to descend.” This helps express the profound truth of today’s readings. In Ezekiel’s view, only the humble can acknowledge fault and turn to God with repentance. In the Gospel from Mat-thew, those who view themselves humbly are able to rec-ognize God’s presence in Jesus. And in his letter to the Philippians, Saint Paul’s stirring hymn tells the story of Jesus, who through his humility showed us the depths of God’s love. Jesus Christ is exalted as Lord precisely be-cause of his humility and service to God. In our own par-ishes and faith communities, just like the Christian com-munity of Philippi, we are called to follow Jesus’ way, and live with humility and in service to one another.

Safeguard the Children

Did You Know? Background checks With school starting again, it’s likely that your children are participating in a variety of after-school activities. Many school sports and club programs are run by volunteers, often parents with kids of their own in the school. It’s important that the school or program takes measures to protect all students, but as parents, it’s critical that you follow up and confirm that the proper checks have been done. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles uses fingerprinting as its core background check. All persons, whether paid or volunteer, who have regular contact with minors or vulnerable adults are fingerprinted. For more information, visit http://handbook.la-archdiocese.org/chapter-9/section-9-3

CHANGING YOUR MIND

The readings today make it clear that to be a fol-lower of Jesus you have to be able to change your mind. More precisely, we must allow God to change us, to transform our minds. For most of us, this can be really hard. This is why the readings speak so much about hu-mility. Humility opens up our capacity to be transformed. Humility allows us to challenge our own thinking and behavior, so as to avoid self-justification on one hand, and self-denigration on the other hand.

Humility can be cultivated in the practice of re-flection. This might mean claiming some time to allow God into our busy days. This might mean time away, through a retreat or day of quiet, perhaps with the help of a spiritual guide or director.

Humility can also be cultivated in actions of ser-vice. We learn Jesus’ humility through washing each other’s feet. We can place other’s interests ahead of our own, and relinquish our need to be in control. When we cultivate humility, we create space within us to allow God to take residence and transform us.
