From the Commodore: If this past September were to have a theme song, it would “Stormy Weather.” A combination of Hurricane Dorian and just plain dangerously high winds wreaked havoc with our on-the-water activities last month. At least we were spared the worst of Dorian. The Bahamas weren’t so lucky. We’re hoping to get back on track in October. We kick off the month with the 12 Pack race on October 5 th followed by our double header regatta “Race for Champagne & Chocolate” on October 19 th featuring both an ocean race to Ft Pierce and an around-the-buoys race in the river for smaller boats. See Mike’s Racing Scuttlebutt for details. We have a very special event planned for October 26 th so save the date. We’re staging a combination Octoberfest dinner and fundraiser for Bahamian relief. We have some terrific entertainment lined up for the St Lucie Sailing Club The Log - October 2019 Incorporated April 4, 1975

Now that the “Ladies of the Caribbean” have orare leaving the building, we can get back to normalracing. Last year for the first time, the St. LucieSailing Club managed two races on the same day tosatisfy the request from the sailors who wanted ariver race and the sailors who wanted the traditionalocean race to Ft. Pierce. We are hoping to havethem again on October 19 and 20. The Race for Champagne will be on October 19and 20. It’s an ocean cruising race, from St LucieInlet to Fort Pierce Inlet, and returning the next dayfrom Fort Pierce Inlet to St. Lucie Inlet. At the same time On October 19, theChampagne / Chocolate Challenge Race will besailed on the North of the St. Lucie River. Even though separating the fleets will give usless attendance in each race, it will make for morefun and challenges. Watch for the Notices of Race! See you out there!

Let’s Raise Hope for HopetownKaren Twiss

We are all good and generous people. We watched the destruction of the Bahamian islands welove, and jumped in to help. We still donate to organizations we know and trust, such as theBahamian Red Cross and Operation 300.

Many of us have personal connections to the Bahamas, and particularly with the Abacos, where Dorian was its most brutal. We used to go to the Sea of Abaco to sail, race, fish, dive, and otherwise float around in that Paradise.

Hopetown, Abaco, was almost obliterated by the storm. Hopetown is Stuart’s “Sister City.” ItsMayor is determined to stay and rebuild, and has threatened to sleep on the beach if needed.Read his very local reports, along with others through Hopetown Fire and Rescue, which is onthe website for the Hopetown Sailing Club. (hopetownsailingclub.com)

How do we, as a club, help rebuild? Sure, there is a huge need for immediate aid. But,knowing that rebuilding will take years, how do we make a long-term difference? Your Bridgehas been thinking about this.

One idea with understandable appeal is to help rebuild the Hopetown Sailing Club. People onthe ground there are working very hard to have the simple luxuries of drinking water andsome shelter, and are blunt about the fact that they are not yet ready to talk about rebuildinganything. So there is a general agreement to wait and watch. We are establishing contacts andchecking out the local organizations. There is no doubt that the right project will emerge.

Meanwhile, a committee -- Pat Erbst, Asta Poirer, and me (Karen Twiss) -- has been formed towork on fundraising. Here is a plan that gets things started:

~ Hold a party. (Because we do parties really well, right?) Save Saturday, October 26 for awhopper of a fundraiser party, where we plan to show a movie and serve dinner. Bring yourcheckbooks, your cash, and your generous spirits. In the meantime, if you can help with theparty, please call Karen: 401-207-3626. We will send you an invitation with all the details.

~ Silent Auctions for Items or Service. We are going to auction off valuable items at our partyand possibly our upcoming meetings. We are looking for things that you can create or donate. These could be: A photograph or painted portrait of the buyer’s boat. A gift certificate for apersonal service or professional consultation. The actual, retired Orange Club Buoy. Pleasethink about what you can offer, and call Pat at 772-349-8629

~ Donations from the 50/50 raffle. The Bridge has offered to donate its share. There willalso be a donation jar at our upcoming meetings.

Our Bridge will keep track of donation totals. When the time is right, they will choose a projectto support, and make sure that our dollars go to the right place.

Pensacola to Host Premier Sailing League Exhibition SeriesIs Stadium Racing the Future of Sailboat Regattas?

Submitted by Joe Sawyer

If the trendsetters are right that September truly is the new January – as far revisiting those resolutionsmade at the beginning of the New Year – then why not make an early resolution now to be inPensacola, Florida, in January of 2020. That is when the Premiere Sailing League USA (PSL) willdebut stadium sailing on Pensacola Bay during the PSL Winter Exhibition Series between Jan. 3 andApril 5.

Premiere Sailing League USA is the first national sailing league for America, designed to increaseawareness of the sport with an innovative approach to an annual series of regattas that starts withDistrict Qualifications (for districts North, East, South and West) and then progresses to NationalFinals that determine rankings in the PSL League.

The League’s purpose is to provide a platform where sailors from different backgrounds can competein a fun, dynamic, fast-paced competition that has been conceived and structured to be easilyunderstood by the media and non-sailing audiences. The format calls for short windward/leeward raceswith as many as 20 races a day on courses close to shore, providing sensational stadium-styleentertainment for spectators ashore.

The PSL Winter Exhibition Series will consist of a pre-series test regatta followed by four invitationalregattas. Teams can charter a boat from the supplied fleet of identical RS21 keelboats for the racingwhich will take place on courses set just off the Pensacola waterfront at either Plaza de Luna or thenearby Vince Whibbs Community Maritime Park. Google “RS21 Keelboats” for info and videos of theboat under sail. Spectators can watch the teams compete in multiple exhibition stadium style racesdirectly in front of the festive venues. Dates have been chosen to coordinate with other activities in thetwo parks to introduce stadium sailing to the non-sailing public.

The first PSL Winter Exhibition is scheduled for January 3-5, 2020, off Plaza de Luna at the foot ofhistoric South Palafox Place adjacent to the Pensacola Marina. Not coincidentally, the regatta takesplace during the 12th Night Mardi Gras Kick-off celebration taking place throughout downtownPensacola.

For each event, practice racing will be held on Friday from the Pensacola Yacht Club in the downtownSanders Beach Community. Then on Saturday and Sunday the six to 12 teams will race short course, fast paced flights, with up to 20 races per day, to determine the winner. The racing will follow theformat of the events that will be offered in 2022, the inaugural year of the full national season of theLeague. Spectators on shore will be treated to race analysis presented by sailing broadcaster andAmerica’s Cup commentator Tucker Thompson, who will make stadium sailing come to life forspectators.
