Detention Pond Report

GENERAL

Location: The site for St. Luke' s Methodist Church is located on the north side of Villa

Maria Road approximately 1. 2 miles east of SH 47.Description:

Area: Initial phase= 9. 75 acres. Ultimate development= 14. 75 acres

Proposed Land Use: Church campus

Existing Land Use: Vacant

Land Description: The site is densely wooded over most of the area. There is a natural drainage

channel that bisects the site. The topography falls toward that channel from bothsides.

r Adjoining Land Use: The site is bounded on the east and west by residential subdivisions. To the northare unplatted residential developments along Chick Lane. To the south across

Villa Maria Road is the Traditions Golf Course and Subdivision.

Primary Drainage Facility: The site is drained by a tributary of Turkey Creek. Runoff that leaves the site

flows under Villa Maria Road and continues down the tributary through theTraditions Golf Course.

Flood Hazard Information:

FEMA FIRM. 48041 CO143 C

Floodplain: No portion of any developed lots lies within a regulation floodplain.

STORM DRAINAGE DESIGN

General Information: All of the storm drainage system on the site is private.

DETENTION POND DESIGN

General Methodology: It is anticipated that the ultimate development of the church campus will include 4

or 5 buildings and associated parking lots. Through discussions with the church, itr, was decided to design the detention facilities for the ultimate development scenario

so it was not necessary to retrofit pipes and outlet control facilities. This includesall 14. 75 acres that the church currently owns, even though only a small part of

d, that is being developed at this time.

As indicated previously, there is a natural channel that bisects the site and providesdrainage for this site, as well as the two residential subdivisions adjacent to the

site. Both of these subdivisions have detention facilities that outfall into this

tributary of Turkey Creek. Due to the topography and soil composition at the site,the channel has incised a deep gully with near vertical banks.

The detention facility being proposed for this site involves installation of a damacross the channel. Outlet control structures will be built into the dam to store

wr runoff and release it at a controlled rate. The size of the detention pond and the

outlet control structures were determined using the HEC- HMS computer software.The computer model was developed to incorporate hydrographs from the three

surrounding detention ponds and also account for the existing storage generated bythe box culvert under Villa Maria Road. The Pre- and Post- Development Drainage

Area Maps are shown in Exhibits A and B. Runoff from other Drainage Areas

around the site was estimated using the standard SCS Curve Number Method.Input data for Pre- and Post- Development Scenarios are shown below.

Outlet Control System

Design: The outlet control structure is a multi- staged facility. It consists of a rectangular

concrete box, approximately 13 feet deep. It is placed in the dam, immediately infront of the emergency spillway. The structure has two 15" pipes that extend

upstream toward the stored water. One is at flowline elevation 272.00 and the

second is at 277. 00. The top of the box is at 284. 00 with a trash rack over it.There are two pipes extending downstream out of the structure. One is a 24" andone is an 18". Both exit the structure at the same flowline elevation and release

water at the downstream toe of the dam immediately near the Villa Maria Roadculvert. A detail of the structure is shown on Sheet C3. All four pipes in the

wr detention pond structure will be RCP.

Emergency Outfall: The emergency spillway for the pond is located in the middle of the detention ponddam. It is designed to operate only when the outlet structure on the pond isblocked, and allows overflows to spill toward the Villa Maria Road culvert. The

spillway will be lined with 4" concrete pavement and will extend over the rear

crest down to the toe of the dam to prevent erosion in the event that the spillway isovertopped.

Spillway Width: 25 ft.

Side slopes: 4H: 1 V

Spillway Elev.: 286. 3 ft

The pre- and post- development flowrates are analyzed immediately downstream ofthe Villa Maria Road culvert. This point is referred to as Study Point A in theSummary Results from the HEC- HMS model. It was chosen to account for the

fm storage that is generated in the pre- development condition from the culvert under

Villa Maria.

CONCLUSION

The detention facility described in this report has been designed in accordance withthe BCS Design Standards. It was also designed for the ultimate development

scenario, which will eventually include all 14. 75 acres that the church owns.Under these conditions, it functions as required to reduce the peak outflow below

the pre- development flowrates.
