and Mr. Ramon S. Ang recently made a
donation to the St. Luke's Medical
Center-Global City 's Center for Organ
Transplantation for hospital-based organ retrieval
service.
Dr. Brian Michael I. Cabral shared that Cojuangco
and Ang have expressed their compassion for
organ transplant patients, particularly kidney
transplant patients, who struggle with finding the
means to fight the disease while waiting for the
right donor. According to the Organ Procurement
and Transplantation Network, someone is added
to the national transplant waiting list every ten
minutes. On average, 22 people die each day
while waiting for a transplant. One organ donor
can eventually save eight lives.

The members of the Institute of Urology of St. Luke's-Quezon City attended the lecture “Professional Ethics in Everyday Practice”
delivered by Dr. Oscar V. A. Tagulinao, a practicing plastic surgeon of the University of Santo Tomas, where he also serves as the Department of Surgery's Ethics Chairman.Urology Consultants and Residents were re-introduced to the medical profession's code of ethics by revisiting the Hippocratic Oath and the Philippine Medical Association's (PMA) Code of Ethics. Dr. Tagulinao highlighted the virtues expected from physicians, namely competence, altruism, and love for fellowmen. His talk also touched on a common practice among doctors – referrals, where he discussed its purpose and the responsibilities of each physician in every referral. Other topics in the lecture were professional fees, ghost surgeries, and ethical issues arising out of modern communication in the practice of medicine, among others. He also presented actual ethics cases received by the PMA's Commission on Ethics of which he was part of for three years. To his fellow medical professionals, Dr. Tagulinao emphasized that “Our [the medical] profession is solely for the good of the patient” and he urged all
attendees to keep it that way. He also stressed that “full knowledge of professional ethics comes only when it is practiced.”
The session ended with Dr. Tagulinao answering questions from attendees who wished to be enlightened on various ethical issues common in their professional practice.
The lecture was a joint effort of SLMC-QC SVP and Head of Medical Practice Group & Medical Director Dr. Jose B. Moran, SLMC-QC Institute of Urology Chairperson Dr. Dennis G. Lusaya, and the Institutional Ethics Bureau.
