“With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope “ Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was not Catholic but his goals were completely aligned with the themes of Catholic Social Teaching: the life and dignity of all people; the call to community participation and inclusion of all Americans, in our democracy; the duty to advocate for those in need, putting the needs of the poor and vulnerable first; and solidarity in our one human family, regardless of racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. In a sense, this is the foundation of Jesus’ ministry in trying to bring all people together to share in God’s mercy and love. Jesus himself was that mercy and love made flesh. Our coming together as one people with a solidarity of purpose, will be the way we “hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope”. In these very difficult and challenging days the goal of moving towards a better time will take great faith and hope and love. Let us pray for our nation and our world, that we find the strength and commitment to “work together, pray together and struggle together” for the common good.

8:30 am Mass Returns We will return to the 8:30 am Mass on January 24. Registration is still required. Masks of course are always required. We will begin taking registrations on Monday, January 18. However, we need your help. We need volunteers to help with check in as well as liturgical ministers; lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and sacristan/MC. Please contact me if you can help in any of these areas.

New Registration System In June 2020 when were able to welcome the faithful back to in person Mass, we adopted a registration system in use by other parishes across the country. It worked very well for our needs at the time. We are now in the process of moving to a more streamlined system. It will be easier for you to register and it will make it easier for us to assign seats based on who you tell us is coming to Mass. We will launch this new registration system on Monday but will be using the current registration system as well until the end of the month. If you have registered for Mass beyond February we will make sure your reservation is moved to the new system. You will receive an email to confirm. If you have any questions please let us know.

SMS School Open House If you are interested in St. Madeleine Sophie School for your child(ren) please be sure to schedule a time for the Sunday tour or schedule a tour at another time. We will have in person tours and a virtual tour available. Please contact Ginny Morris-sey in the school office [email protected] or visit their website for more information smsbellevue.org

    Making Good Choices:

Our conscience is the inner voice that helps us know the law God has placed in our hearts. Our conscience helps us judge the moral qualities of our own actions. It guides us to do good and avoid evil.

The Holy Spirit can help us form a good conscience. We form our conscience by studying the teachings of the Church and following the guidance of our parents and pastoral leaders. God has given every human being freedom of choice. This does not mean that we have the right to do whatever we please. We can live in true freedom if we cooperate with the Holy Spirit, who gives us the virtue of prudence.

This virtue helps us recognize what is good in every situation and make correct choices. The Holy Spirit gives us the gifts of wisdom and understanding to help us make the right choices in life, in relationship to God and others. The gift of counsel helps us reflect on making the correct choices in life. Loyal Press Called To Be Catholic.

Question of the Week January 17

    Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: God calls us to follow Christ. Question for Children: What can you do this week to show that you are a follower of Jesus?

Question for Youth: Andrew seemed to know immediately that he should follow Jesus. Do you have that same sense of confi-dence in your faith in Jesus? What helps? What makes it hard?

Question for Adults: In what ways do you experience being called by Jesus? What does he want you to do?

General Intercession for the parish: Let us pray in thanksgiving for the gift of the church in our lives, leading and guiding us to ever deeper communion with Christ.

Jesus, Boy in the Temple This week the story of Jesus travelling with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Passover as a young boy was told. Jesus, old enough to go to the Temple by himself, wanted to be with God and talk with great teachers. Mary and Joseph did not know where he was and were worried. At last they found Jesus in the Temple and wanted to know where he had been. He replied, “Didn’t you know I would be in my Father’s house?”

Reflection for January 17, 2021 Ron Czarney, Children's Faith Formation Catechist

“Look, there is the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.”

Gospel, John 1:35-42 John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Look,

there is the Lamb of God.” And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.” Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —, “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which is translated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is translated Peter.

WOW! What a moment for those two disciples. They met Jesus for the first time and followed Him!

“Look, there is the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.” Can you remember back to the very first time you were introduced to Jesus and were drawn to follow Him? Who was it that brought you to Jesus? Was it your mom and dad? Maybe it was your grandma or your grandpa. Could it have been one of your teachers? Whoever it was, one thing was evident in this very meaningful moment — you would have had to be “open” to receiving such an important invitation.

So, now your heart is open and you’re all excited — just like the two disciples in today’s gospel reading — and you want to follow Jesus! So you shout out, “Yes Jesus, I want to follow You!” . . . And then He says something that completely stops you in your tracks . . .

“What are you looking for?” There goes Jesus, surprising us again with His questions — questions that take us out of our

comfort zone. Who do people say that I am? Do you Love Me? Whose picture appears on the coin? YIKES! Didn’t you think this following Jesus thing would be a lot easier than this? (Did I just ask a question, like Jesus?) Okay people, it’s the moment of truth. What ARE we looking for? Hopefully, our answer to this ques-tion is, “I’m looking for a personal relationship with Jesus.”

That first encounter we’ve had with Jesus is now something that we remember with fondness.

Let’s think about all the many times we’ve encountered Jesus since that first time — those times when we found Him after a long dry spell. You know, like the Israelite’s dry spell. Unfortunately, their dry spell last-ed for over four thousand years! Let’s hope that our time without Jesus isn’t that long of a wait. Because when we allow Jesus into our hearts, we are so at peace by His presence in our lives that we don’t want our conversation time with Him to end. I did say “conversation time,” didn’t I? Yep, that’s what prayer is all about — having a conversation with Jesus. So, today when you’re talking with Jesus, tell Him how much you love Him, and tell Him how much you want to be like Him, and tell Him how thankful you are for His love, and mercy, and forgiveness. Ask Jesus to look at you like He looked at Simon Peter, and to invite you into where He can be found. AMEN!

Most of us are trying to put together the jigsaw puzzle we call life without a very important piece.

Over time this becomes incredibly frustrating. In this extraordinary book, Matthew Kelly powerfully demonstrates that we cannot live the life we have imagined, or experience the joy we yearn for, unless we learn to tend the soul. From there, with his classic style of practical

wisdom, he teaches us how to remedy this problem.

Thank you to the Women’s Spirituality Team and to the St. Therese Guild for their generous support in making this book available to any parish family that would like to receive it.

Books will be distributed at the Masses this weekend or contact the parish office.

    WSCC/USCCB STATEMENTS ON VACCINES

The Washington State Catholic Conference issued a statement this past week, recommending that the faithful get the new vaccine to protect themselves, loved ones, and the community.

READ STATEMENT HERE OR ON OUR WEBSITE

Additionally, the USCCB issued a statement about the morality of this vaccine stating, “Given the urgency of this crisis, the lack of available alternative vaccines, and the fact that the connection between an abortion that occurred decades ago and receiving a vaccine produced today is remote, inoculation with the new COVID-19 vaccines in these circumstances can be morally justified.”

LITURGY VOLUNTEERS FOR IN PERSON MASS

Our liturgical volunteer needs of course look very different as we practice the necessary health and safety protocols for in person Mass.

COMMUNION MINISTERS: We are looking for Eucharistic Ministers for each of the Masses. Due to health protocols there are a number of changes to this role. Volunteers for this role need to be 65 or younger.

LECTORS: We are looking for lectors for all of our Masses. Lector workbook will be provided. Training will be provided for new lectors.

8:30 AM Mass: We will be adding the 8:30AM Mass back to the weekend schedule. However, we need your help. Please contact us if you can volunteer for one of these liturgical ministries.
