EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MARCH 3, 2019

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

Archangel Gabriel School

By now you know that for the coming school year, St. Malachy Parish School will be merged into Holy Trinity Parish School to make the new Archangel Gabriel School, shared by the three RocKenRo parishes: Holy Trinity, St. John of God, and St. Malachy. My immediate motive is that St. Malachy School operates at an increasing deficit that neither the parish nor RocKenRo can afford. To save resources for our shared mission, we need to stop the deficit spending. A few of my trusted councilors advised me simply to close St. Malachy and invite the students there to move to Holy Trinity. People of this reasonable opinion should be respected: Under Kim Stevenson’s leadership, Holy Trinity School has grown stably and successfully. But we ask how best to undertake our shared mission as RocKenRo, including the mission to aid Christian parents in their God-given responsibility for rearing and educating their children, especially in the Catholic faith. To merge the schools effectively creates a Grouping school and the opportunity to integrate our mission to all our parents who subscribe to it. Given Holy Trinity School’s success, I plan to locate all K through 8 education at that campus. Because the St. Malachy Pre-School is fully certified, I plan to locate all pre-school there. I make the 8-minute commute daily; I hope parents who chauffeur their children will be able to do so. Many questions remain: Tuition, fundraising team, uniforms, gym usage, etc. To answer I’ll be relying on advice from my implementation committee: Bonnie Amendola, Charles Baker, Rosemary Corsetti, Linda Gomulka, Julie Loehlein, Joseph Maggi, Amy Maxin, Fr. Alan Morris, and Dr. William Stropkaj. Our first task is to hire a principal for Archangel Gabriel School. Our current principals and outsiders are invited to apply. The principal will hire the new school’s faculty from the current pool of teachers at both schools. If you have special questions or concerns, please convey them in writing to me or a member of the implementation committee. I hope all current students at Holy Trinity and St. Malachy enter Archangel Gabriel. Enrollments for 2019-20 at either school will be honored at Archangel Gabriel. To parents who judge that Archangel Gabriel is not the best choice for their children, I recommend Northside Catholic Assumption Academy, St. James School, St. Margaret of Scotland School, and St. Philip School. I proposed the name “Archangel Gabriel” to link the patronal names of the three parishes: The Archangel Gabriel is “one of the seven holy angels who…enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One” and

behold the Holy Trinity (paralleling Raphael per Tobit 12:15). The Archangel Gabriel makes known God’s plan for the salvation of his people (Daniel 8:16, 9:21; Luke 1:19). St.

Malachy is most famous for his analogous gift of prophecy. The Archangel Gabriel announces the conception of Jesus to the blessed virgin Mary. The principal church of St. John of

God Parish is St. Mary, Help of Christians. The naming of the school coincides with RocKenRo’s desire to commemorate the late Fr. Kenneth Keene. His mother, Alvera Keene, and family graciously agree to donate toward the installation of a large image of the Archangel Gabriel in his memory. May God grant eternal rest to Fr. Ken. Archangel Gabriel, pray for us! Please remember that Daylight Savings Time begins next Sunday, March 10. Set your clocks forward one hour or you’ll

be late for Mass! Lent begins Ash Wednesday, March 6. Please find your Lenten calendar in this bulletin. The Diocese of Pittsburgh sets the last Sunday before Lent as the annual appeal for the Parish Share Program, but only

St. Malachy Parish traditionally observes this practice. St. Malachy parishioners will therefore receive my appeal. But everyone is asked to note that (1) Parish Share gifts are typically the most effective way to support your parish and (2) funds from Parish Share are never used for the compensation fund for those abused by clergy, nor for related legal expenses.

ST. JOHN OF GOD - LADIES OF CHARITY The St. John of God Ladies of Charity will have the honor of hosting Sr. Althea Spencer, who will provide a time of Lenten Reflection. We meet in the Gathering Place at 7:00 p.m. and due to scheduling we will meet the second Thursday, March 14. A joint meeting of the Rockenro Ladies of Charity will be the following week on Thursday, March 21 at Holy Trinity. The meeting will be right after the 6:00 p.m. mass. We would like to cordially invite any women in the Rockenro grouping to join us at these meetings. Hope to see you all at both gatherings of the Ladies of Charity. ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Every Tree Is Known By Its Own Fruit - In grade school catechism class you may have been asked to learn and memorize the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, long-suffering, modesty and chastity. These 12 attributes are the means by which we come to understand how an individual is living in accord with the Holy Spirit. They are the work of God’s grace in our lives and the result of us tending to our hearts, making them fertile soil for the love of God to take root so that only good fruit can grow. Like any agricultural image that we use for faith, the Fruit of the Spirit requires both hard work and trust. A farmer works hard to till, plant, weed out and tend to his crops in order to reap a bountiful harvest. Yet, he also has to trust that the sun and rain will come in the necessary proportions to nourish what he has worked so hard to plant. For us, we have to work hard to weed out anything which seeks to harden our hearts or set up resistance to the work of the Spirit. Then, we must trust the ways in which the Spirit is at work to bear abundant good fruit in the through us. Nurturing the Fruit of the Spirit works for our good, the good of others and the good of the Church as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SCHOOL NEWS We begin the month of March with the beginning of Lent on Wednesday. The students will attend Mass at 8:30 a.m. The students will also lead The Stations of The Cross on Friday at 8:45 a.m.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS Fourth grade had a busy February. We wrote stories about what it would be like to be the President for the Day. We learned more about the presidents by performing a President’s Day play for the school. We also plotted graphs of George Washington and Abe Lincoln. We have just finished learning about the Respiratory System in Health class. We are now starting to learn about the Heart and Circulatory System. The students love using our new Chromebooks. We review skills playing Kahoots!, we use them to practice our math skills with the game Prodigy, and we are reviewing Science with the program Legends of Learning. The students are also busy preparing for the Spelling Bee and reading books for the “Battle of the Books” team competition which we will hold in June.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP Wednesday, March 13

6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Holy Trinity Ministry Center

The Branches: A Night About Prayer Open to all youth grades 6-8

For more information contact Kristin Hayes: [email protected]

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Teens in grades 8-12 are invited to the Silver Ring Thing: Unaltered Tour on Wednesday, March 27 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Seton LaSalle High School. SRT is a radical response to culture’s view of love and relationships. The live events inspire teens to defy the meet-up, hook-up, break-up culture of today and discover true life found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. This goes way beyond ‘purity’ to embrace our identity and pursue a lifestyle that brings honor and glory to God. Tickets are $6 online (unalteredtour.com) or $8 at the door (tickets are free for Confirmation candidates). For more information or to sign-up, contact Steven Swank at [email protected] or 412-771-7480.

LIVING ROSARY Living Rosary Sign-ups: Can you say 1 extra decade of the Rosary (an Our Father, 10 Hail Mary’s and Glory Be) every day during Lent for a pro-life intention? Do it from home or in the car - anywhere! Signups for the Living Rosary, where 20 people combine to be on a rosary team saying a one of the 20 mysteries of the Rosary will occur at all weekend Masses before Lent March 2-3 and Ash Wednesday at the church entrance. You will be given a sheet with your decade and a pro-life intention. Please make this part of your Lenten prayer as we see the expansion of the later term abortion laws in our country. The Repect Life group also recommends the Gosnell Movie, rated PG-13, a non-violent movie that used testimony from the Philadelphia court case against the doctor that was performing abortions after 24 weeks if you wish to learn more about the reality of abortion. Helen Stamatakis, [email protected], 412-788-1974.

MONTOUR BAND PURSE BINGO

The Montour High School Marching Band is holding a Purse Bingo on Friday, March 22 at the Crafton Knights of Columbus Hall, Crafton Avenue (Behind St. Philip Church).
