TMFrom the Collar At this time as we near the end of another

liturgical year, the Lectionary includes gospelsabouttheendtimesthatcallforustolookfarintothe future. Thesegospels inevitablypaintadarkanddismal picture of calamity anddoom, and sowe often dismiss them. The apocalyptic (comes from the Greek which means to uncover or reveal)imageryoftoday’sgospelisnoexception.Wearetemptedtoask,“When,Lord?”Jesus’answer,“nooneknows,”outtobringustopaymoreattentiontothepresent.Nowiswhatcounts.Thefutureisnow.WethinkofJesus’SecondComingasafutureevent.Infact,thedarkeningofthesunandmoonand stars is already happening in the trials andtribulations thatnotonlybeset the irstdisciples, butalsoarepartofourownlives.Jesuspromisesthat all these things will happen. He furtherpromises that he is “near, at the gates.” Thisgospelisabouttheultimatevictoryoverdarknessthat belongs to those who are faithful. Thatvictoryisnow.Thefutureisnow.Whatoughttostartle us into sober reality is that we know theend will come. Like the gospel, Daniel’s visiondescribesinthe irstreading“atimeunsurpassedindistress.”Alsolikethegospel, hisvisionrevealsthevictoryofthose“writteninthebook”whoaretheelect, thosewhohavebeen faithful. Wehaveall the means at hand to face darkness and evilwith con idence, assured that one day we “shalllive forever.” The future holds no fear for us;rather than fear, we anticipate our future withjoyful expectation, because the one we await iswithinandamongusnow.Thefutureisnow.
