The Sacraments In Baptism we are given faith. We need to make it grow daily by approaching Jesus, speaking to him, and asking him to open our hearts to all people, regardless of their race and social status.

Jesus does not want to listen to you? What do you say to convince him?

Jesus, your friend, invites you: ♦ Jesus is moved by the insistence and strong faith of the

woman. What convinces you to help others? ♦ Jesus shows that God does not make any distinctions

among groups, races or languages. Do you reject some children because they are not like you?

What am I going to do? Speak to Jesus and tell him about something for which you need help. Tell him you have faith that he will be with you. Tell Jesus what you would like to do this week: ♦ For example: I will include in my games some

thing that worries me and I will have faith that he listens to me.

♦ God does not keep his temple for just a concrete group of peo-ple, but accepts and welcomes al those who want to be close to him. God offers salvation to all people.

♦ The strong faith of the woman moves and convinces Jesus. The woman does not ask for anything for herself, but for her daugh-ter.

♦ The mercy of God extends to all, regardless of origin and race. 4. What is going on in our lives? ♦ Hove you ever discriminated against someone because her or she

were not of the same country or culture? ♦ What are our most frequent prayers? Do we ask with faith? Do we

always ask for things for ourselves o for material things, or do we also pray for the good of others?

A Canaanite Woman Convinces Jesus ♦ Una Mujer Cananea Convence a Jesús

¿POR QUÉ REZAR? Los “extranjeros” que Isaías menciona, los “gentiles” de que habla Pablo, o los “cananeos” que cita Mateo son llamados a adorar en oración al verdadero Dios. Al escuchar las lecturas de hoy, tal vez nos sintamos tentados a preguntarnos: ¿Por qué re-zar? Es una pregunta retórica; se equipara a preguntar por qué han de hablarse los amigos o los enamorados besarse. Rezar es una manera de relacionarnos con Dios, una manera de hablarle. Los apóstoles tuvieron la oportunidad de conversar en persona con Jesús encarnado. Nosotros tenemos la oportunidad de hablar con Dios en la oración. Nuestra relación con él debe ser entusias-ta; no puede ser pusilánime. John Donne, un poeta y sacerdote inglés del siglo XV, supo cuáles eran la cualidades de una buena oración. Donne le pide a Dios que lo trate de manera diferente que a la mayoría de los cristianos. WHY PRAY? The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of re-lating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow.
