The Pastor’s Corner The readings for this Second Sunday of
Lent are well known: the testing of
Abraham, the great promise in Romans 8, and the
Transfiguration of Jesus before Peter, James and John. A
few words are needed on each of them. The omitted verses
in the first reading present us with an insight into the
grieving heart of Abraham on route to sacrifice is only son, Isaac.
The text indicates that Isaac carried the wood for the altar
fire. Abraham, however, carried two things that could have
injured Isaac; the fire torch and the knife for the sacrifice.
The rabbinical tradition posits that although confused
about the command to sacrifice his son, Abraham did not
want any harm to come to him; hoping, no doubt, to starve
off the horrible consequence. He presents a father’s love for
his child… protective and enduring.
St. Paul begins his argument in Romans 8 that the
Father wills to save us from our sins through the sacrifice of
His only Son, Jesus. Paul asks, “Do you believe that if the
Eternal Father provides this for us, will He not provide for
us in all things?” It’s one of the most profound reflections
in the Christian life.
Our Holy Land Pilgrimage last fall provided the
privilege for us to celebrate Mass on the tradition site of the
Transfiguration, Mount Tabor. We all echoed the words of
St. Peter, “It is good that we are here!” The Father spoke to the
apostles, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.” The
Father previously spoke to Jesus at his baptism in the
Jordan by John the Baptist…”You are my beloved Son in
whom I am well pleased.” Lived mystery.
Their confusion must have been complete. I’m sure
these three Apostles had to have privately spoken among
themselves about what just happened. “What does “rising
from the dead” mean? What did it mean for their teacher
Jesus; and even for themselves? What does it mean for us?
The journey has begun. Signs are being given to us
along the way in the liturgy, in the Lenten Talks in March ,
during our weekly Stations of the Cross, and in our private
prayer time. The Lenten Season is slowly transforming us.
We, too, need to recognize the signs and talk about what
they could possible mean today…for us.
~A blessed Lenten journey.
