Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary,

For many of us, summer means vaca-tion. And taking a vacation means relaxing and appreciating all the things we have been too busy to notice in the past year. Like Truth and Goodness and Beauty. These three things, when contemplated with faith, restore the soul and rejuvenate the body. That’s the purpose of a real vacation. It is not a “getting away from” so much as a “reconnecting with” all that carries real meaning. Usually it means reconnecting with Nature in order to re-establish our Communion with God our Crea-tor. With this in mind, I would like to offer for your prayerful consideration an excerpt from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si (On Care For Our Common Home):

Jesus took up the biblical faith in God the Creator, emphasizing a fundamental truth: God is Father (Mt 11:25). In talking with his disciples, Jesus would invite them to recog-nize the paternal relationship God has with all his creatures. With moving tenderness he would remind them that each one of them is important in God’s eyes: “Are not five spar-rows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God” (Lk 12:6). “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heav-enly Father feeds them” (Mt 6:26).

The Lord was able to invite others to be attentive to the beauty that there is in the world because he himself was in constant touch with nature, lending it an attention full of fondness and wonder. As he made his way throughout the land, he often stopped to contemplate the beauty sown by his Father, and invited his disciples to perceive a divine message in things: “The kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all seeds, but once it has grown, it is the greatest of plants” (Mt 13:31-32).

Jesus lived in full harmony with creation, and others were amazed: “What sort of man is

this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?” (Mt 8:27). His appearance was not that of an ascetic set apart from the world, nor of an enemy to the pleasant things of life. He was far removed from philosophies which des-pised the body, matter and the things of the world…

In the Christian understanding of the world, the destiny of all creation is bound up with the mystery of Christ, present from the be-ginning: “All things have been created though him and for him” (Col 1:16). The prologue of the Gospel of John (1:1-18) reveals Christ’s creative work as the Divine Word (Logos). But then, unexpectedly, the prologue goes on to say that this same Word “became flesh” (Jn 1:14). One Person of the Trinity en-tered into the created cosmos, throwing in his lot with it, even to the cross. From the begin-ning of the world, but particularly through the incarnation, the mystery of Christ is at work in a hidden manner in the natural world as a whole, without thereby impinging on its auton-omy.

The New Testament does not only tell us of the earthly Jesus and his tangible and lov-ing relationship with the world. It also shows him risen and glorious, present throughout cre-ation by his universal Lordship: “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross” (Col 1:19-20). This leads us to direct our gaze to the end of time, when the Son will deliver all things to the Fa-ther, so that “God may be everything to every one” (1 Cor 15:28). Thus, the creatures of this world no longer appear to us under merely natural guise because the risen One is mysteri-ously holding them to himself and directing them towards fullness as their end. The very flowers of the field and the birds which his hu-man eyes contemplated and admired are now imbued with his radiant presence.

Estimadas Familias y Amigos de Santa Margarita María,

Para muchos de nosotros, el periodo del verano significa el tiempo de vacaciones. Y las vacaciones significan relajarse y apreciar todas las cosas que hemos ignorado durante el año precedente. Como la Verdad, la Bondad y la Be-lleza. Estas tres cosas, cuando se los contempla con fe, restauran el alma y rejuvenecen el cuer-po. Ese es el propósito de una verdadera vaca-ción. No es un "alejarse de" tanto como un "volver a conectar con" todo lo que lleva un sig-nificado real. Por lo general, significa reconec-tarse con la naturaleza para restablecer nuestra comunión con Dios nuestro Creador. Con esto en mente, quisiera ofrecerles a ustedes para su consideración un extracto de la carta encíclica del Papa Francisco, Laudato Si (Sobre el Cui-dado de Nuestro Hogar Común):

Jesús asume la fe bíblica en el Dios creador y destaca un dato fundamental: Dios es Padre (Mt 11,25). En los diálogos con sus discípulos, Jesús los invitaba a reconocer la relación pater-na que Dios tiene con todas las criaturas, y les recordaba con una conmovedora ternura cómo cada una de ellas es importante a sus ojos: «¿No se venden cinco pajarillos por dos monedas? Pues bien, ninguno de ellos está olvidado ante Dios» (Lc 12,6). «Mirad las aves del cielo, que no siembran ni co-sechan, y no tienen graneros. Pero el Pa-dre celestial las alimenta» (Mt 6,26).

El Señor podía invitar a otros a estar atentos a la belleza que hay en el mundo porque él mismo estaba en contacto permanente con la naturaleza y le prestaba una atención llena de cariño y asombro. Cuando recorría cada rincón de su tierra se detenía a contemplar la hermosu-ra sembrada por su Padre, e invitaba a sus discí-pulos a reconocer en las cosas un mensaje di-vino: «El reino de los cielos es como una semilla de mostaza que un hombre siem-bra en su campo. Es más pequeña que cualquier semilla, pero cuando crece es mayor que las hortalizas y se hace un árbol» (Mt 13,31-32).

Jesús vivía en armonía plena con la crea-ción, y los demás se asombraban: «¿Quién es este, que hasta el viento y el mar le obe-decen?» (Mt 8,27). No aparecía como un asce-ta separado del mundo o enemigo de las cosas agradables de la vida. Para la comprensión cris-tiana de la realidad, el destino de toda la crea-ción pasa por el misterio de Cristo, que está pre-sente desde el origen de todas las cosas: «Todo fue creado por él y para él » (Col 1,16). El prólogo del Evangelio de Juan (1,1-18) muestra la actividad creadora de Cristo como Palabra divina (Logos). Pero este prólogo sorprende por su afirmación de que esta Palabra «se hizo carne» (Jn 1,14). Una Persona de la Trinidad se insertó en el cosmos creado, corriendo su suerte con él hasta la cruz. Desde el inicio del mundo, pero de modo peculiar a partir de la en-carnación, el misterio de Cristo opera de mane-ra oculta en el conjunto de la realidad natural, sin por ello afectar su autonomía.

El Nuevo Testamento no sólo nos habla del Jesús terreno y de su relación tan concreta y amable con todo el mundo. También lo muestra como resucitado y glorioso, presente en toda la creación con su señorío universal: «Dios quiso que en él residiera toda la Plenitud. Por él quiso reconciliar consigo todo lo que existe en la tierra y en el cielo, restable-ciendo la paz por la sangre de su cruz» (Col 1,19-20). Esto nos proyecta al final de los tiempos, cuando el Hijo entregue al Padre todas las cosas y «Dios sea todo en todos» (1 Co 15,28). De ese modo, las criaturas de este mundo ya no se nos presentan como una reali-dad meramente natural, porque el Resucitado las envuelve misteriosamente y las orienta a un destino de plenitud. Las mismas flores del cam-po y las aves que él contempló admirado con sus ojos humanos, ahora están llenas de su presen-cia luminosa.

THIS WEEK IN SMM HISTORY

June 27, 1982—The parish welcomed The Pilgrim Friars, a group of Dominican priests and brothers, who led the music at the 5pm Sunday Mass and entertained afterwards in an old-fashioned hoe-down June 28, 1965— The Holy Name Society sponsored the first Fireworks Stand, open until July 4th, on Western Avenue and 262nd Street June 28, 1982— The marble mosaic was completed along the back wall of the altar in church, a gift of the Holy Name Society. June 29, 1959— Holy Name Society held its first parish trip to a Dodgers baseball game at the LA Coliseum. Bus and ticket price is $3.75. Event was open to men and boys only. June 29, 1959—Four SMM women were offi-cially certified by Cardinal McIntyre as CCSD teachers. Religious education for public school students began the following September. June 30,2010—Msgr. Patrick Thompson re-tired as pastor after 16 years of service at the parish. He is succeeded by Msgr. Marc Trudeau July 1, 1964– Father Hegarty announced a new parish fundraiser to replace the annu-al Bazaar: all parishioners were asked to contribute a day’s wage. The first year re-sulted in $13,421.

A Journey of Faith

When I started on this faith journey that led me to join the RCIA program I didn't realize I was in search of any-thing or that I was missing something- the journey found me. When I met my husband almost 10 years ago, I didn't know then, but he would be slowly guiding me back to my faith. He remained a gentle reminder I could open my heart to receive God, but I wasn't ready to listen. When we got engaged, I knew my husband wanted to be married in the Catholic Church. Reluctantly I met with Father John to discuss it, expec ng to be judged for not being bap zed or ques oning my faith. Instead, he met me with an open heart and offered an oppor-tunity to re-connect with God through the sacrament of marriage. In May of 2016 I a ended the marriage en-counter weekend, it was the first me in 10 years I was quiet enough to listen and willing to open my heart to God. I wanted to explore my faith but didn't know where to start. My husband took me to mass a few mes but I felt out of place. I wasn't following the homily one day so I read the bulle n and there was my answer- a read-ing about an RCIA graduate discussing his faith journey. Immediately a er mass I signed up. Just when I was trying so hard to get closer to God and find solace in my faith I kept feeling like things were trying to pull me away. During these challenges I turned to prayer, and the RCIA classes, group leaders, and group members who helped me make a shi in my per-spec ve and realize I am not alone. During these classes I was able to find support in my ques oning of my faith and was met with the realiza on that God is walking this journey with me, and on the days it felt too hard to get up and face the world my faith carried me through. On Easter Vigil I was bap zed, received first commun-ion, and was confirmed. I was met with an overwhelm-ing sense of peace and fulfillment that I had been searching for. I now see there is always a way through the struggles if I move towards my faith. The void I had been carrying around is filled and I am no longer search-ing.

El evangelio continúa el Discurso Misionero de Jesús que envía a sus discípulos a procla-mar abierta y valientemente su fe, lo que han oído de El. Jesús dice repetidamente que no hay que tener miedo, porque los obstáculos al evangelio van a ser vencidos por la fe y el amor, con la asistencia de Jesús. Además, per-secuciones, accidentes, crímenes y enfermeda-des no son lo peor que le puede suceder a un cristiano; lo que mata la vida familiar, la her-mandad y la compasión, es mucho peor; no hay que tener miedo sobre todo predicar y dar testimonio de nuestra fe; a veces hace falta mucho valor para hacerlo.

Recuerden las repetidas invitaciones de los Pa-pas San Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI a los jóvenes y a todos los católicos: “No tengan miedo.” Algunos expertos han dicho que el problema más serio de la iglesia católica es que muchos católicos tienen miedo a hablar de su fe; la fe se convierte en el secreto mejor guardado. Jesús quería que nuestra fe fuera algo muy personal pero a la vez muy pública, como una cruzada o causa personal que abra-zamos. Pero para poder hablar de nuestra fe, es muy importante instruirse para conocerla mejor. No basta que hayamos estudiado nues-tra fe cuando éramos jóvenes, como prepara-ción para recibir los sacramentos. Como adul-tos, tenemos la obligación de ir conociendo y profundizando cada día más nuestra fe, a tra-vés de cursos parroquiales y de la lectura de libros apropiados, para poder dar razón de lo que creemos y practicamos.

Cada día tenemos muchas oportunidades para proclamar nuestra fe: en el trabajo en el modo de tratar y de hablar con los demás; en la fami-lia por medio de nuestra oración en común y por el amor y la tolerancia mutuos; en la pa-rroquia por medio de nuestra cooperación, apoyo y compromiso; en nuestra vida personal al tratar de ser personas de compasión, gene-rosidad, respeto y apertura

hacia los demás. Cada acción del cristiano, de algún modo, debe ser una proclamación de su fe.

Una de las cualidades más fundamentales del cristiano tiene que ser la confianza absoluta en la bondad y providencia de Dios. Porque Dios nos ama, no le tenemos miedo a nada; su amor nos mueve a responderle con nuestro testimo-nio que es hacer propaganda de Dios, de su poder, amor y presencia entre nosotros. El mundo hace mucha propaganda contra la igle-sia Católica, pero Dios está de nuestra parte; Dios nos va a responder del modo que noso-tros le respondemos. Porque si le damos a Dios lo mejor que podemos y tenemos, Dios no se va aquedar atrás. Nos va a dar todo lo mejor que podamos desear. Lo que Dios quie-ra darnos supera toda imaginación.

Reflexión

Esta Eucaristía que estamos celebrando es la proclamación de la muerte de Cristo hasta que venga de nuevo. Por medio de la Eucaristía el cristiano entra en el dinamismo del amor sin condiciones y se siente capaz de vencer el mal, el pecado y el dolor.

ADORACION EUCARISTICA Además de nuestra Adoración Nocturna el primer viernes de cada mes, ahora tendremos exposición del Santísimo Sacramento durante el día en la iglesia. Comenzará después de la Misa de las 8:15am y continuará hasta las 6:45pm. justo antes de la Misa del Primer viernes, a las 7:00pm, tendremos la Bendición con El Santísimo. La Adoración nocturna continuará en la Capilla del Santísimo Sacramento a las 8:00pm. Por favor considere pasar una hora en oración durante el día en la iglesia o por la noche en la capilla.

Los defenso-res de la eutanasia usan términos como "ayudar a morir". Pero esto difumina la distinción entre dar asistencia a una persona agonizante y causar su muerte. Madre Teresa "ayudó a muchas personas " a morir”. Ella estaba presente ahí con ellos, ayudándo-les a encontrar coraje para enfrentar la muerte, re-cordándoles su dignidad, preparándolos para en-contrarse con el Señor. Este es el significado legítimo de ayudar a las personas a morir. Oración. Señor, que podamos mostrar a los mori-bundos su dignidad y Tu compasión. -Fr. Un viaje de fe

Cuando empecé este viaje de fe que me llevó a unirme al programa de RICA, no me di cuenta de que estaba en busca de algo o que me faltaba algo, en el viaje lo encontré. Cuando conocí a mi marido hace casi 10 años, no lo sabía entonces, pero él lentamente me guiaría de vuelta a mi fe. Siguió siendo un suave recordatorio de que podía abrir mi corazón para recibir a Dios, pero yo no estaba dispuesta a escuchar. Cuando nos comprometimos, sabía que mi esposo quería casarse en la Iglesia Católica. Reluctan-temente me reuní con el Padre John para discutirlo, esperando ser juzgada por no ser bautizada o cuestionar mi fe. En cambio, me encontré con un corazón abierto y me ofreció la oportunidad de volver a conectarme con Dios a través del sacramento del matrimonio. En mayo de 2016 asistí al fin de semana de encuentro matrimonial, era la primera vez en 10 años que estaba lo suficiente-mente callada para escuchar y dispuesta a abrir mi corazón a Dios. Quería explorar mi fe pero no sabía por dónde empezar. Mi marido me llevó a misa unas cuantas veces pero me sentí fuera de lugar. No estaba siguiendo la homilía, un día que leí el boletín y ahí estaba mi respuesta: una lectura sobre un graduado de la RICA que hablaba de su viaje de fe. In-mediatamente después de la misa me inscribí. Justo cuando estaba tratando de acercarme a Dios y encontrar consuelo en mi fe, seguía sintien-do que las cosas estaban tratando de alejarme. Durante estos desafíos me volví a la oración, y a las clases de RICA, los líderes del grupo y miembros del grupo me ayudaron a cambiar mi pers-pectiva y darme cuenta de que no estaba sola. Durante estas clases pude encontrar apoyo en mi cuestionamiento de mi fe y me encontré con la comprensión de que Dios está caminando este via-je conmigo, y en los días que sentía muy difícil levantarme y enfrentar al mundo mi fe me llevó. En la vigilia de Pascua fui bautizada, recibí la primera comunión, y fui confirmada. Me encontré con una abrumadora sensación de paz y satisfacción que había estado buscando. Ahora veo que siempre hay un camino a través de las luchas si me muevo hacia mi fe. El vacío que había estado cargando está lleno y ya no busco más.
