Pastor’s Corner

Last week Bishop Conlon expressed to me his gratitude for a wonderful weekend, which he spent with us. He said that the parishioners of St Margaret Mary’s are not only friendly, they are warm and welcoming. I want to thank everyone who extended hospitality for that weekend in hosting meals, organizing meetings and preparing liturgies. The bishop’s goal is to visit every parish in the diocese. He began in 2011 and will finish next May.

“5 Women To Inspire Today’s Catholics”

Wednesday, December 5 9:15 to 11:15 am In the Cor Center

Donation $8 We all could use a little inspiration—and who better to help us than women from our Catholic tradition? Heidi Schlumpf will share stories of five women (or groups of women) you should know: Mary Magdalene, Hildegard of Bingen, the four churchwomen killed in El Salvador and a collection of contemporary young activists. Each has something to teach us about how to be a better Christian and a better person. Participants will also have time to reflect on those Catholic women who have inspired them. Heidi Schlumpf is national correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. She has three decades of experience covering religion, spirituality, social justice and women’s issues. She is the author/editor of three books, including a biography of feminist theologian Elizabeth Johnson and “While We Wait: Spiritual & Practical Advice for Those Trying to Adopt.” She also is the editor of the “Notre Dame Book of Prayer.” She has a bachelor's degree in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame and a master's of theological studies from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University. COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

Sunday, December 16 5:00 PM in church

A tree stump is a sobering, but timely Advent image. Compared to a stately tree with wide spreading branches, God’s chosen people eventually grew too proud. God chopped the tree down but through the prophets promised, “a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse.” Christians believe this promise is fulfilled in Jesus.

Perhaps an unhealthy pride within the Catholic Church brought about the scandal of sexual abuse and its cover-up. This sad reality calls for repentance and reform down to the Church’s roots. Yet, abuse of power, in its multiple and subtle manifestations, is a sin with which many people struggle. You are invited to a communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a spiritual practice of hope in the redeeming and reforming grace of Jesus in our midst. Approximate-ly one hour, this service will include an examination of conscience, the opportunity for pri-vate confession, and a ritual around the Jesse Tree. Please join the parish community for this Advent prayer seeking forgiveness, renewal, and hope for ourselves, our Church, and our world.

Religious Education

(Preschool—5th)

Wonderful God, help us be ready for Jesus’ coming at the end of time and in our everyday life

Advent Plans Advent begins on today. We will have a brief wreath lighting service at the end of each class session. Our 4th graders are preparing a Jesse Tree. New ornaments made by the children who are sharing our faith heritage will be added each week. The children will be dismissed in the Parish Center at their normal time.

We are still collecting aluminum pop-top tabs for Ronald McDonald House. There will be a collection jar for pop tops on the table near the tree. There is another collection box on the shelf in the hallway around the corner from the RE/YM Office (between Rooms 7 & 8).

Classes for Wednesday, December 19th are canceled. Instead, all are invited to attend the Cookies & Carols prayer ser-vice in the church at 4:00.

Christmas Eve 5:00 Children’s Mass On –line registration for the Christmas Eve 5:00 Children’s Mass was sent out last weekend. K to 5 Children in the RE program or attending ASCA are invited to participate. We need angels, shepherds, gift bearers and readers. Extra registration forms are available on the RE counter outside Room 7. Rehearsal is schedule for Saturday, December 22nd at 9 am.

Christmas Break The last class is Tuesday, December 18th. Classes will resume on Monday, January 7, 2019.

First Communion Blessings Rites As our children prepare to enter more fully into the Christian life through the Sacrament of Eucharist, we invite them to receive special blessings. The second Rite of Blessing (water) will be on Saturday, January 12th at the 5:00 pm Mass, and Sunday, January 13th at the 8:00 and 10:00 am Masses. The final blessing (candle) will be the weekend of March 16th and 17th. Registration information for First Communion will be mailed in January 2019.

First Communion Parent Retreat We have created a half day retreat program that delves into the traditions of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Each presentation will challenge parents to understand how the sacred is woven into their lives. The last one will take place on Sunday, February 3rd. We will begin with prayer and an introduction then lunch will be served. We are asking that at least one parent from each family attend one session during the year. If you attended a prior session, you are not required to attend again.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word After opening prayers children are invited to attend "Liturgy of the Word." They are escorted to the Upper Room where they gather for an interactive session that helps the children learn the readings of the day in language and activities they'll easily understand. The program is offered at the Sunday 8 and 10 am Masses.

Please contact Sue Davey at 369-0833 with any questions.

Fr. Paul’s Homily

Holy Spirit versus Prince of the Air Eph 2:1-10; Lk 12:13-21

11

“You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?”

This is a very provocative and I believe relevant question; we should always keep it in mind. Are we living to pile up treasure for ourselves, or are we trying to become rich in what matters to God?

The first reading from Ephesians is talking about the very same thing. Paul talks about what he calls “the ruler of the power of the air,” sometimes it’s translated “prince of the air.” It’s intended to be a sort of rival to the Holy Spirit. “Spirit” is air; the word “spirit” means “breath” in Latin; in Greek pneuma is air or wind. And we talk about the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit has a sort of enveloping presence that we don’t notice. We don’t notice the air. We breathe the air. If there is no air, we die, but we don’t notice it. We only notice when something is wrong: if there is a terrible smell in the air, or if there is

pollution in the air, or if it’s some usually fresh wind, we might recognize that. But ordinarily we take air for granted.

Well in a similar way there are principles working on our minds all the time as well: the Holy Spirit leading us to the Father, reminding us of what Christ taught. And then there’s the prince of the air, the rival, the rival version. And what does the prince of the air encourage? Well every kind of indulgence, doing whatever you want, having no goals or only self-satisfaction. That’s the essence of modern freedom: it’s to do whatever, with no sense of a goal or some sort of transcendent purpose. In fact the idea of a transcendent purpose seems in modern thought to be an imposition and something offensive, as if the human being should be able to simply determine his or her own reality: what we are, what we want, what we shall do, what we shall become. That’s supposed to be all within the ambit of our freedom.

This of course is a very sad and very sick joke. It’s totally impossible.

We are created by God for a reason, for a purpose, ultimately to have eternal communion with God. And that alone will suffice to make us happy; nothing else will do. So this idea that we have all this freedom to do what we want—for what? It will never lead to happiness. It is really a terrible waste of time, but it is the very plan of the prince of the air, or “the ruler of the power of the air,” as it says here. That’s the plan, to confuse people, to let them waste away their lives, waste away their energy, waste away their potential in a completely useless life. That is the work of the evil one.

Now it is up to us to be aware of the difference between the Holy Spirit and the prince of the air. Both are pervasive forces, influences, but we do have a choice and an obligation as well to discern which is which and then to follow through with that discernment.
