Question of the Week Q. A common misconception about the Catholic Church is that the pope is infallible in all things. Is he? A. In a word, “No”! When it comes to what the weather will be or if the Green Bay Packers will win the Super Bowl, the pope has no ‘inside information’. The word ‘infallible’ means incapa-ble of being wrong or making mistakes. People sometimes mistakenly think that Catholics believe the dogma of papal infallibility applies to everything a pope says. That is certainly not the case. The biblical roots of the Church’s understanding of papal infalli-bility are found in Jesus’ promise in Matthew 6:18 that the Holy Spirit would guide the Church into all truth and in Luke 22:32 in which Jesus tells Peter to feed His sheep and that He had prayed for Peter so that his faith might not fail. From apostolic times the Church has understood that promise to guarantee that the Church will never fall away from Jesus’ teachings even if individual Catholics might. Confusion about infallibility often arises from confusing infalli-bility with impeccability. Impeccability is the inability to sin. Popes are sinners and Pope Francis was recently asked who Jorge Bergoglio (his name before becoming pope) is and he immediately responded, “A sinner”. Infallibility is not the inabil-ity to sin or to be wrong in personal or even theological opin-ions. Infallibility, as defined at the First Vatican Council in 1870, is a gift of the Holy Spirit given for the good of the Church in which when teaching on matters of faith or morals that are essential to our salvation, the Holy Spirit will not allow the pope in defin-ing the faith of the Church to error. The gift of infallibility is a gift that is given to the Church and exercised not only by the pope but by the bishops of the world who are in union with the bishop of Rome in teaching the faith. The exercise of infallibil-ity is very limited. Most doctrines of the Church have never been ‘infallibly’ defined. The Church’s faith that Jesus is the Son of God or that He is the Savior of the world have never been infallibly proclaimed because they are accepted as the faith of the Church. In modern times the dogma of the Immac-ulate Conception (1854) and the dogma of Mary’s Assumption into heaven (1950) are examples of popes defining the faith of the Church infallibly. Infallibility is a gift of God to the Church exercised through the Pope and the bishops of the Church as successors to the apostles guaranteeing that in those matters that are essential to salvation the Church cannot error. Bottom line: The Packers are on their own no matter how much Pope Francis might support them!

St. Vincent DePaul

We are looking for interested parishioners to help in the ministry of St. Vincent de Paul. Our meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month. We would love for you to come and see what exactly it is that we do. Our current SVDP treasurer, Michelle Johnson, is retiring from the position at the end of this month. We have a need for a person to be our treasurer starting in October. There are approximately 6 financial transactions each month. The person do not need to do any home visits. If you are interested in learning more about this, you may call Paula Egenolf, Daryl Fry, Ron Mikkelson, or Michelle Johnson.

Birth Line If you have any baby items or baby furniture you no longer need, please think about donating them to our Birthline ministry. If you have any maternity clothing or large size clothing, this too is being accepted and you can place your items in the basket marked “Birthline”. Your support is greatly appreciated.
