-Commonly known as Saint Mark's Basilica
- Most famous of the city's churches
During 13th century, the function has been changed from the private chapel of Doge to a “state church” Location for big public ceremonies of the state After end of the Venetian Republic, it has been subjected to the local bishop.
-It has been known as Chiesa d’Oro (Church of gold) from the 11th century because of its opulent design
-Examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture
