Seventh Sunday of Easter Acts 7:55-60 The witnesses laid down their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Psalm 97:1-2, 6-7, 9 The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory. Rev 22:12-14, 16-17, 20 The one who gives this testimony says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! John 17:20-26 Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Joanne Gibson, Editor Diana Zuna-Nieves, Associate Editor Bulletin announcements and columns are due on Mondays before 2 PM except before holidays.
Bulletin drafts are submitted to Msgr. Flynn for review. Email submissions to [email protected]. Email photos of St. Mark’s events to [email protected].
Seventy-five years ago this week, more than 156,000 soldiers took part in the Normandy landings. Among those who parachuted in behind enemy lines was Chaplain Francis Sampson (shown inset), affectionately known as the “Parachute Padre.” When Father landed in a river, he cut off his gear and found his way to a French farmhouse where he helped treat severely injured troops. It didn’t take long for two German SS troops to capture him and march him at gunpoint down the road to execute him. Fr. Sampson would later admit that he was so nervous that he kept repeating the traditional Catholic grace before meals instead of making an Act of Contrition. Up against a wall, with two guns raised and aimed at him, Father was rescued at the last second by a German noncommissioned officer who approached him after ordering the
soldiers to stop. Father, still in shock, managed to identify himself as a priest whereupon the officer saluted and made a slight bow, before revealing a Catholic medal under his SS uniform. Chaplain Sampson was then escorted to a nearby German intelligence post where he was interrogated, found harmless and then released. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism at Normandy. After his military service, Fr. Sampson became the pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Shenandoah, Iowa, and later, Director of ROTC at Notre Dame. One of his missions was featured in the movie, “Saving Private Ryan.”

June is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our church celebrates the solemnity of the Sacred heart of Jesus on the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost. Devotion to the Sacred Heart can be traced back to the eleventh century. It marked the spirituality of many great saints, St. Bernard of Clair Vaux, St. Bonaventure and St. Gertrude the Great to name a few. I, myself, have always been drawn to the Sacred Heart. I used to love the Hymn, that went: “Sacred Heart of Jesus, fount of love and mercy, unfold to us the treasures of Thy grace, that so our hearts so cold and so unfaithful, may ever be thine own forever more….” (Ah, the days of my youth in St. Elizabeth’s school in Linden.)
Of course, June boasts of brides, roses, and graduates. The name June stems from the Roman goddess Juno--equivalent of the Greek goddess Hera.
On the 9th, we celebrate Pentecost, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples and our Blessed Mother. Think of those disciples, timid, afraid, still in hiding, being set on fire by the
Holy Spirit and going out into the streets and preaching in tongues to the crowds. Thousands were converted that day. Alleluia! “Come Holy Ghost, creator blest, and in our hearts, take up thy rest….”
Brothers and sisters, it’s important that we acknowledge answered prayers. For one, my prayers were answered when my granddaughter called and asked to come to Mass with me. I’m so grateful that we attended Mass together. Another answered prayer came from a grandma who attended our May living Rosary. Her petition was for her granddaughter who suffered with uncomfortable sensory issues. Well, I was told there was a significant improvement in the child and she appeared much happier. Thank you, Jesus!
My dear family in Christ, we have so much to be thankful for and as grateful Christians, we need to give back. What I mean is we need to pray for the needs of others. Lord, we lift up those fighting cancer, those with Alzheimer’s, their caretakers, and all with debilitating sickness and disease. Our petition books are
filled with pleas for healing for loved ones, pleas for children and grandchildren to come back to practicing their faith, prayers for friends and family that are addicted to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and any habit that invades the sanctity of the home and family.
Lord, hear our prayers. We pray for our church and our country. Lord, send down Thy Holy Spirit with all Your gifts and touch the hardened hearts of so many, that life in the womb may be safe and that death comes only when you call for it. Help us, Lord, to deal with life each day, taking one day at a time and remembering that You are in the present moment. Help us to hear Your call to meditate and immerse ourselves in Your great love for us. Lord, at times we forget how healing and beautiful your Sacred Heart is–Your Heart pierced for us , Your Heart that bled for us, Your most Sacred Heart, ever waiting to encompass us with peace and love. Lord, may we never be too proud to turn to You, no matter what, as Your mercy is great, likened to a gentle tidal wave. Amen.

Community Activities
Rachel’s Vineyard
As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for the millions of babies lost to abortion. However, little is heard about the tremendous emotional pain, regret and crippling remorse that many women and men experience following an abortion. These parents are also victims of a culture of death. They suffer a traumatic wound, with consequences that can last a lifetime. As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for them, too. Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat that offers these wounded parents an opportunity to walk with Christ through the complex circumstances that led to abortion, as well as the devastating aftermath. Rachel's Vineyard also provides a blessed opportunity for parents to begin processing their grief, and to memorialize their children. There is no judgment. There is just an atmosphere of fellowship, compassion, and healing. If an abortion is impacting you, remember that God loves you, just as much as He loves your child. If you would like to experience a weekend of God's love and mercy for yourself, please contact Judy Warenkiewicz at 732-536-6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential. The next Rachel’s Vineyard retreat runs from August 23rd through 25th.
