AUGUST 18, 2019 | TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS

Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in

order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this past Thursday's solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemora-tion of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a

deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ's victory over death. In the tradition of the East, August 15 is the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the Falling Asleep of the God-bearer. There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology,

since this is seen as a transformation of Mary's life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted

the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary's death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary's body rising to heaven. She greeted him as my friend, and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her

tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ,

received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples.

Chúa Nhật Tuần Thứ 20 Mùa Thường Niên sự khôn ngoan. Anh thoáng thấy của cải không phải là hạnh phúc đích thực, vì thế, anh đến với Chúa để tìm sự khôn ngoan. Khốn nỗi, con đường khôn ngoan mới vạch ra đã bị của cải cản lối khiến anh không nhận ra được rằng sự sống đời đời mới là của cải quí giá nhất mà anh phải tìm kiếm. Người thanh niên tìm đến với Chúa Giêsu, vì nhận thấy Ngài là một tôn sư có gì khôn ngoan hơn những bậc thầy trong dân Israel mà anh thường gặp. Anh chưa nhận ra Chúa Giêsu chẳng những là tôn sư dạy sự khôn ngoan, mà còn là chính sự khôn ngoan. Ngài không chỉ đưa ra một lời dạy khôn, mà còn là lời ban sự sống đời đời; ai đón nhận và thực hiện lời Ngài sẽ được sống đời đời. Chính vì thế, anh đã sầm nét mặt, buồn sầu bỏ đi khi Chúa Giêsu bảo anh: Hãy về bán hết của cải, rồi đến theo Ngài. Anh yêu của cải hơn sự sống và hạnh phúc đời đời. Anh tưởng Lời Chúa chỉ là một trong những lời chỉ giáo muôn mặt của các bậc thầy trong Israel, có theo hay không cũng chẳng sao, cứ nắm giữ lề luật cha ông truyền lại đã đủ chiếm được Nước Trời.

Do đó, anh làm sao hiểu được lời này: "Anh chỉ còn thiếu một điều". Anh đã thực hiện những gì ghi trong lề luật, nhưng anh còn thiếu một điều, mà thiếu điều đó, những gì anh đã nắm giữ mới chỉ

là thứ công chính của Biệt phái không thể vào Nước Trời được. Ðiều anh còn thiếu chính là tin nhận Chúa Giêsu là Con Thiên Chúa, là liên kết với Ngài và thực hiện Lời Ngài. Vì Lời Ngài là lời thần linh làm cho việc tuân giữ giới răn trở thành sức sống trong tâm hồn con người. Thật ra, tự nó, của cải không cản trở người ta vào Nước Trời, nhưng thái độ ham mê của cải cản trở người ta yêu mến Thiên Chúa và Chúa Kitô. Cần phải có tinh thần sẵn sàng từ bỏ mọi của cải, mọi đam mê, để được tự do nghe tiếng Chúa dạy dỗ trong tâm hồn. Thái độ từ bỏ của cải và đam mê, không nhất thiết bắt người ta trở thành nghèo mạt, bởi vì từ bỏ mọi sự vì Chúa và vì Tin Mừng, chẳng những không làm người ta bị thiệt thòi, mà còn mở rộng tương giao xã hội của họ, vì họ sẽ được đại gia đình nhân loại, và rồi với những thử thách đã vượt qua, họ sẽ được hưởng sự sống đời đời. Nguyện xin Chúa kiện toàn nơi chúng ta những gì Ngài đã khởi sự, và cho chúng ta đạt tới lý tưởng là sống theo Chúa, Ðấng là đường, là sự thật và là sự sống đời đời.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El otro día leí un artículo escrito por un pastor bautista so-bre la necesidad de tener un altar en casa para educar a nuestros hijos en la fe y la oración. Lo leí con interés ya que el uso del altarcito tiene una larga historia en la Iglesia católica. En casa de mis abuelos paternos, en México, había un bello altarcito en forma de pirámide que contenía flores, velas y figuras de Jesús, María y algunos santos. Además de esto estaban también algunos instrumentos de oración como el rosario, la Biblia y algún otro libro de oración. También en casa de mi abuela materna, en Texas, había un rinconcito sagrado. Muchos latinos tenemos altarcitos familiares. Algunos son verdaderos altares como el de mi abuela, mamá Lilia. Otros son rincones especiales como el de mamá María, con alguna imagen y libro de oración y fotografías de nuestros parientes. A fin de cuentas no importa ni su tamaño ni su forma.
