SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 8, 2019

THE LONG AWAITED ONE

As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his historical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to

envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole

world would finally dwell in justice and peace. After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist’s message about preparation for “the

one who is coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets.

SAINT JUAN DIEGO (1474-1548)

December 9 How well Mary’s own words describe Juan Diego: “God has cast down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly” (Luke 1:52). Through him, for the diverse peoples of the Americas, indigenous and immigrant, the Mother of God became known as their Mother, too. Cuauhtlatzin, his given name, means “One Who Speaks Like an Eagle,” and Juan Diego faithfully delivered the Virgin’s request that a church be built at

Tepeyac where she had appeared to him. To the skeptical bishop’s request for a sign, Our Lady showed Juan Diego roses blooming through stony ground, despite winter’s cold. When he unfolded his tilma to present them to the bishop, imprinted there was Mary’s image! Her blue sash and the flower over her womb were traditional Aztec symbols of pregnancy and new life. But her features were those of a mestiza, indicating mixed Aztec-European heritage. Thus to peoples too easily prone to a “clash of cultures,” Our Lady of Guadalupe remains the enduring icon of unity-in-diversity, the fruit of our one baptism into Jesus, her Son. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. • Xưng tội Mùa Vọng của Cộng đoàn Việt Nam Giáo xứ St Martin sẽ được tổ chức vào ngày thứ sáu 13 tháng 12 năm 2019 từ lúc 7:00 pm

• Ngoài ra các Chúa nhật tháng 12, sẽ có Cha ngồi tòa Giải tội từ lúc 4:00 pm trước các Thánh lễ Việt Nam.

SỐNG MÙA VỌNG (tiếp theo…) 3- Mùa Vọng là Mùa chuẩn bị đón Chúa Kitô "sẽ đến" viếng thăm vào cuối đời mỗi người chúng ta. Không ai biết được ngày giờ nào, vì thế, hãy chuẩn bị tâm hồn sẵn sàng. Như Chúa Giêsu nói với chúng ta: “Chúng con hãy coi chừng, hãy tỉnh thức và cầu nguyện, vì chúng con không biết lúc đó là lúc nào!” (Mc 13, 33). Thánh Phaolô cũng khuyên: “Chúng ta mong chờ Chúa Kitô, Chúa chúng ta, tỏ mình ra …” và mong rằng “chúng ta bền vững đến cùng, không có gì đáng trách trong ngày Chúa Kitô, Chúa chúng ta ngự đến” (1Tx 5, 23) Thường xuyên suy gẫm về sự chết là cách thế hữu hiệu nhất để sống cách tốt nhất. Đức Hồng Y Px. Nguyễn Văn Thuận chia sẻ cho chúng ta kinh nghiệm: “Nếu tôi biết ngày mai mình sẽ chết, thì hôm nay tôi sẽ sống một ngày đẹp nhất”. Chúng ta chưa sống từng ngày đẹp nhất là vì cứ tưởng mình còn lâu mới chết. Đó cũng là cám dỗ của ma quỉ để ta mê say cuộc sống này mà mất đi sự cảnh giác. Ai cũng dễ ham mê gây dựng cho mình một sự nghiệp trần thế, muốn có uy tín hơn, sáng giá hơn, chức vụ cao hơn, ảnh hưởng lớn hơn, mọi người nể phục hơn, làm nên những công trình to tát hơn. Ít có ai muốn sống âm thầm, hiền lành, khiêm tốn và vui lòng chịu khó, chịu khổ theo ý Chúa muốn; ít ai muốn chịu khinh khi, chịu xóa mình, chịu quên lãng, để sống cho Chúa và tha nhân. Nhưng rồi tất cả những gì chúng ta gầy dựng để mong hưởng thụ cho riêng mình đều là hư vô, vì khi nằm xuống trong lòng đất rồi thì tất cả đều chấm dứt, chẳng còn lại gì. Chẳng ai còn nhớ đến, hiện hữu cũng vậy, không hiện hữu cũng thế, duy chỉ một mình Chúa biết. Quả thật, ý nghĩa và giá trị cuộc sống của ta chỉ ở nơi Chúa mà thôi. Vì

thế, đừng bao giờ tìm kiếm những gì ngoài Chúa, 4. Thực tế, Mùa Vọng là mùa chúng ta chuẩn bị tâm hồn xứng đáng

để mừng Lễ Giáng Sinh sắp tới. Thật sự ta chẳng bao giờ xứng đáng được với chính Chúa, Đấng thánh thiện vô ngần, nhưng chỉ là bớt bất xứng hơn. Điều này đòi hỏi mỗi người cứ phải hoán cải, sửa đổi và tu chỉnh cuộc sống không ngừng, để góp phần với Chúa làm cho cuộc sống trở nên chân thật hơn, khiêm tốn hơn, yêu thương hơn, cao đẹp hơn, an bình hơn, như tiên tri Isaia đã hô hào, như Gioan Tẩy Giả đã loan báo, như trong thư 2Phêrô 3-9 đã nhắc lại “Thiên Chúa kiên nhẫn đối với anh em; vì Ngài không muốn cho ai phải diệt vong, nhưng muốn mỗi người đi đến chỗ ăn năn hối cải …”. Người ta chỉ tin vào Thiên Chúa, tin vào Phúc Âm khi bộ mặt của Chúa Giêsu lộ rõ trong đời sống của chúng ta, để từ đó ta mới có thể trao ban Chúa cách đích thực cho người khác. Mỗi lần khuôn mặt người khác được sáng lên do sự tiếp xúc với long bác ái của chúng ta, thì đó là nét mới của khuôn mặt Thiên Chúa được lộ ra. Nếu không như thế, thì đời sống thiêng liêng, mọi hoạt động tông đồ và truyền giáo đâu có nghĩa gì. Đó cũng chính là sự thể hiện tính cách mầu nhiệm, hiệp thông và sứ vụ của Giáo Hội trong cuộc đời của mỗi người chúng ta. Hiểu như thế và xác tín thâm sâu như vậy, chúng ta mới thấy Lễ Giáng Sinh có một ý nghĩa trọng đại trong từng năm của cuộc đời mình. Nhờ đó, ta biết chuẩn bị bằng cách cải đổi tâm hồn mình như thế nào để phát sinh hiệu quả ơn thánh và làm lớn mạnh công trình tình yêu mà Chúa muốn thực hiện nơi mỗi người chúng ta.

A medida que transcurren los domingos de Adviento el foco de las lecturas cambia de la venida final del Señor a su histórico nacimiento. Las lecturas de hoy mezclan ambos. Isaías, desilusionado de los reyes de sus tiempos, imagina al rey ideal que gobernará con la aprobación de Dios y será guiado por la divina sabiduría. Por siglos el pueblo judío anticipó la llegada de ese Mesías, quien inauguraría una era de gracia cuando todo el mundo finalmente viviría en justicia y paz. Luego de siglos de creciente expectativa, la predicación de Juan Bautista sobre la inminente llegada del Mesías no hizo más que provocar un intenso interés. El mensaje del Bautista sobre “el que viene” (Mateo 3:11) deja claro que Jesús, de hecho, es aquel esperado por largo tiempo que inaugura la nueva era predicha por Isaías y todos los pro-fetas.
