OUGD303 Brief 4 - St Martins Introduction - Board 1/7 Introduction St Martins is a practice in Chapeltown with a group of doctors that were moving practice location next year. It was a live brief that we had to pitch for. The concept for the design had to reflect some key words that they wanted the logo to portray. These included relationships, trust and community. I tried to stick as closely to these words as possible while still maintaining a recognisable logo for St Martins. Logo Based on the three main words, the logo that St Martins liked the most is the one at the top of the page. The idea of the logo was to take the ‘M’ from St Martins and to use it to make a circle. Putting the ‘M’s in a circle resembled people holding hands in a circle. So I added some circles around the outside to resemble heads. This portrayed the over all image of a group of people holding hands in a circle. This incorporated all three words from the brief in to the design. Another key part of the brief was the typeface. The typeface had to be something that could be made available in a Microsoft Office software package. I researched in to some typefaces, and found a typeface called Aller. It had various weights and was commercially free for up to 25 computers. I felt that the typeface went well with the overall image of the logo and St Martins decided they really liked it. IntroductionSt Martins is a practice in Chapeltown with a group of doctors that were moving practice location next year.

LetterheadBeing that it was a live project I wanted to keep the restrictions slightly as to how I could design the letterhead. I wanted to stick to the brief as much as I could, which meant loosely following the NHS brand guidelines. The main information included in the letterhead is, the address and telephone numbers and the opening times. The back of the letterhead is the St Martins symbol but it has a low opacity. This is to create a sort of watermark effect. The letterhead is a standard A4 size, and is printed on to standard 80gsm paper. The reason for this is that it keeps the cost down, as they are likely to be using the letterheads frequently.

The typeface used for the type on the letterhead is Frutiger LT Std with a point size of 8. This is also the typeface and size to be used for the body copy. The colour for the type is black at 65% tint. This is to keep the

Business CardsThe business cards had the main logo on the front, with the information on the back. The business cards had a concept. The concept was that as each doctor would have their own business card, that I would change the colour of the St Martins symbol to a different colour for each of the doctors. That way it was more personal for the patients. They got a feel that they had a one on one bond with that doctor which is something that St Martins felt strongly about. The loved the idea and wanted to include it on the business cards.

The cards used standard 200gsm matte stock, because they were going to be printed in large quantities rather than thinking about quality.

Compliment SlipsVery similar to the letterheads, the compliment slips had the contact information in the 65% black tint, with the opening times of the practice. The back of the compliment slip has the St Martins symbol with a lowered opacity. The size of the compliment slip is 210mm x 110mm. The stock is 80gsm white paper, again more for quantity rather than quality.

Page 4: St Martins

Self Inking StampI thought it was necessary to design a stamp and get one made that the practice could actually use. The stamp is black and 40mm in diameter. My design thought behind this was, for St Martins to keep the cost of stationary down, they could use stamps to mark envelopes being sent out to patients so that they still had the practice logo on them, but its cheaper than getting special envelopes printed. Also they can just bulk buy any size of envelope they want and use the stamp on all of them.

Appointment CardsAppointment cards are important because they remind patients of either a single appointment or they can remind people of many check-ups they may need. The appointment card has the contact details of St Martins, and also the opening times so that patients know when to call if they have an issue. The rest of the card is simple and has the right amount of boxes so that the information can be added.

Leaflet DesignOne of the tasks of the brief was to redesign a leaflet cover to within the brand guidelines and to reformat all of the text inside the leaflet. The leaflets are to be found in the reception area of the General Practice. For the leaflet I used the NHS brand guidelines to come up with a template that could be used in a Microsoft Office package. The leaflet is a standard A5 format 148mm x 210mm. It is printed on to 100gsm glossy paper and stapled together as a booklet.

Brand GuidelinesHaving to follow the NHS brand guidelines so closely was a huge task. I also found them to be hard to understand at times, so I designed my own brand guidelines for St Martins. The small booklet outlines different deliverables, the size, stock, colours and usage of the logo/symbols. After the last page, there is a black page, followed by the back page.

Booklet StockThe stock for the brand guidelines would be matte around 200gsm. The reason for this is that only 2 or 3 of these would be printed so they can afford to be of good quality. A PDF version is also available online for the General Practice to use. It is a full colour booklet and PDF using the St Martins blue.

Main SignageThe idea of the main sign outside at the front of the building, is so that people have some recognition that St Martins is here. The sign would be A1 and printed on to a plastic board so that it is weather proof all year round. It contains all necessary information such as, names of the doctors, opening times and a telephone number for booking appointments.

Internal SignageThe inside of the building will have a internal signage system. A main sign with directions of places on will be in reception, and then these smaller signs will be placed in front or near the target location. Simple with a colourful strip this helps people that may have poor eye sight reach the right place. To aid the blind, each sign would have the Braile of the location so that people can feel along the walls and know when they are in the right place.

St Martins WebsiteWhen I started designing this website I looked back at the three words and decided that I needed to implement them in to the website if possible. So I put the logo in a prominent position and put a contact number at the top of the bar so that people would be able to see it quickly. I added a news section with the aim to keep patients up to date with the latest developments locally. The option to take a tour of the new practice was added as a future option to add in, as it hasn’t been built yet. The notice board gives members access to advertise or tell people of events to raise money for charities. This is to address the community side of the brand.

At the bottom of the website, there are links to all of the recent articles for people to go back and re-read. Also included at the bottom are links to important websites such as NHS Direct.

WebsiteA close-up of the news section of the website
