    Christian Faith Formation

    in the Episcopal Church is

    a lifelong journey with

    Christ, in Christ and to

    Christ. We hope youll be

a part of our journey at

St. Martins as we begin a

    new Christian Formation

    program year.

    We kick-off our new

    season with Homecoming

on Sunday, Sept. 9Sunday, Sept. 9Sunday, Sept. 9Sunday, Sept. 9. The

    day will feature Christian

    Formation classes for all

ages and an all-parishBBQ and potluck lunch.

    Start-ups of additional

    programs for children,

    youth and adults will

    continue throughout the

    month. Some programs

    are returning from last

    year; others are new

    offerings we hope youll

    volunteer members for

    our community. We thank

    everyone who shares

    their faith and time to

by the Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis

    Assistant Priest

    As a kid no matter

    where we moved I

found in Sunday Schoola place of welcome.

    Sure, we learned about

    Jesus and dramatic

    Bible stories of God

    working through chaos

    (floods, plagues, mean

    kings, lions) and misfits

    (Moses stuttered; Jacob

    cheated; David was just

    a boy; Jonah a coward;

    Peter often clueless) to

    bring about amazing

    results. Those stories

    helped me know that

    upheaval and weakness

in my own life were not

    the end of the story

    because God re-works

    doom into new thriving.

    But the most important

    thing I learned in Sunday

    School was that random

    adults cared enough to

    learn my name and

wait at the door to greet

little me each Sunday. Iknew I was important.

    What I didnt know was

    how much those adults

    were being transformed

    by our insights and

    questions; how inse-

    cure some felt never

    having taught before;

    how some struggled to

    integrate their faith into

    their daily lives. I didnt

    know that my presence

    gave them opportunity

    to reconnect with the

    power and mystery of

    God evident in those

    old stories and to

    engage their faith on a

whole new level byhaving to present the

    Faith of the Church to

    us.

    As a sometimes

    grudging teen, I found

    genuine connections

with people from whomthe social structures of

    high school would have

    isolated me, and that

    unanticipated apprecia-

    tion of others grew in

me. As an adult I relish

    opportunities to learn

    new perspectives from

    people who exercise

their faith in all kinds of

    ways.

    Often, the most enlight-

    ening insights arise from

    random partici-

    pants. The leaders

    offering triggers a

    response in someone.

    Their shared story and

    new understanding then

    bless and strengthen the

    whole group.

    by the Rev. Jon Hall

    Somewhere on the way to

    Santa Rosa, we were

    ambushed by grace. It

    was a nice surprise but

    definitely just that, a sur-

prise. It was on a recent

    Sunday, while in Northern

    California for a continuing

    education conference

    and family vacation that

    Colleen, Abbey and I set

    out from San Anselmo for

a day trip to nearby SantaRosa. We were passing

    by the smaller town of

    Petaluma when we de-

    cided to participate in the

    morning worship service

    at St. Johns. After a

    couple of stops in town,

    and Colleens intuition

    with directions, we pulled

up in front of the church

    a few minutes early. This

    allowed us time to look

    over the bulletin, pray

    and center for worship.

    A couple of folks greeted

    us just before the

    opening hymn to offer a

    welcome and a hand-

    shake. The liturgy was

    familiar and Abbey even

    headed out with the kids

    for a Godly Play lesson

    during their childrens

    church. I was struck by

    the positive spirit of that

    community. The congre-

gation of 40 was made up

    of very different people

    who had gone through a

church split a few yearsago but had been faithful

    to worshiping together

    until others in the com-

    munity either found them

    or were invited into the

    church family.

    I noticed that the congre-

    gation was starting to

remodel their nursery, refinish the Parish Hall

    floors and restore the

    playground equipment in

    their center courtyard.

    Signs of life!

    I guess what really

    touched me about that

    day was more than the

    physical projects going on

    to maintain and beautify

    the church. Those are

    certainly holy pursuits

too! But it was the Church

    that was inside each one

    of them that was being

    built-up as well. This was

    evident in the hearty

    singing, the sermon that

    spoke about God blessing

    us with enough to live

    out our calling, the sweet-

    ness of another church

    familys holy communion

    and then in the hospitality

    after the service. You

    could tell they cared

    about one another a

    great deal. Plus it is

    always interesting to walk

    into another parishs

    coffee hour. Visitors can

    learn a lot about the

    spiritual life of the con-

    gregation by how they

    greet and eat together.

They took the time to be

with us and that was the

    cherry on our visit.

    We ended up having

    conversations with

    several of the members. I

    was impressed with how

    friendly they were,

    especially knowing that

    we were just stopping by

for the day. They gave us

food, good coffee and abag of chocolates with

    information about their

    church.

    By the time we checked

    our watches we decided

to stay in town for the

    rest of the day. Santa

    Rosa will be there the

    next time. The hospitality

    St. Johns offered was too

good to pass up. We tooktheir kindness with us for

the rest of our trip. The

    people of St. Johns

    Petaluma might not see

    us again. But then again

    their graciousness made

    us think that we were

    somehow already more

    than visitors when we

    met them. We were their

    guests.

    It is with this experience

fresh in my mind that I

want to thank all of you

    who take the time to

    welcome one another,

    especially our guests, at

    St. Martins. People may

just be with us for an

hour or two but that time

    could surprise them with

    Gods grace in a memora-

ble way. Thank you all for

    welcoming the body of

    Christ in worship,

    outreach and fellowship.

The gift of your time can

be a most welcoming actto others who thought

they were on the way to

    something else. What a

    pleasant surprise awaits

    copy of the book and

    come join the discussion.

    Newcomers are always

    welcome.

    From Booklist:

    Popular author

    Picoult tackles the

    controversial topic of

    gay rights in her

    latest powerful tale.

    When music thera-

    pist Zoe Baxters

latest pregnancy ends in a still-

    birth, her husband Max decides

    he cant handle any more

    heartbreak and leaves her. As

she picks up the pieces of her

    life, Zoe is surprised to

    find herself falling for a

    school counselor who

    happens to be a

woman. While Zoe isfinding happiness with

    Vanessa, Max falls off

    the wagon and is

    helped by a pastor from

    his brothers evangelical

    church. Vanessa and Zoe wed

    in Massachusetts, and

Vanessa offers to carry one of

    the fertilized embryos Zoe and

    attending St. Barnabas in

    Florissant. My memories

    of stewardship revolve

    mostly around offertory

    and budgets. I witnessed

    pledge drives and capital

    campaigns, but received

    little education on what it

    means to be a good

    steward.

    The Bible is pretty clear

that all we have is God's

    to not only offer my

glory. Not only are we to

return an amount to him in

our giving, but use the rest

    in his honor. That's pretty

    powerful stuff when you

think about it. How do I

    honor him and make stew-

    ardship a central theme in

my faith? How do I expandbeyond just financial and

    do this with my time,

    treasure and talent?

    The subject of giving is

    often taboo and uncom-

    fortable to talk about. We

    need to look at ourselves

    and ask the question,

    "Why?"

    While filling out our pledge

    card each year is an

    important part of the

    budgetary process for the

    church, I'm looking

    forward to growing my

    faith beyond to establish-

    Max stored. Excited by the

    prospect of being a mother,

Zoe goes to Max to get him to

    release the embryos to her

and is shocked when he in-stead sues her for custody of

    them, backed by his church.

    Told from the perspectives of

    all three major characters,

    Picoults gripping novel ex-

plores all sides of the hot-

button issue and offers a CD

of folk songs that reflect Zoes

    feelings throughout the novel.

of life. I look forward to

    working with Jeff Klieve

and the rest of the stew-

    ardship committee.

    Thank you for the

    opportunity to serve

    St. Martins and the

blessings my family hasreceived through our

    attendance.New stewardship co-chair Kevin

    By Janis Greenbaum,

    Communications Coordinator

    Communications is all

    about giving and receiv-

    ing a message.

    Church Communications

    is all about giving and

    receiving our message

    about God. Its what we

    do to share our faith.

    With that in mind, about

    a dozen members of our

    parish came together

    Saturday, Aug. 11 for a

    communications work-

shop. It was a time to

    share ideas, learn how to

    use tools and discover

    the importance of church

    communications. Im

    grateful to all who

    attended and hope you

    invite, inform, include,

    instruct and even inspire

us. I encourage you use the

    tools that are available to

    us: Sunday announcement

    sheets, iMessages weekly

    e-mails, our website

    (stmartinschurch.org),

    our Facebook page

    (facebook.com/

    myriad of other possibilities

    we have. If you have

    questions or ideas for our

    church communications,

    contact me in the church

    office on Mondays,

    Tuesdays or Thursdays

    (jgreenbaum@

    took away some ideas to

    include more effective

    communications in your

    ministries.

The lesson I learned fromthe event is that there is

no ONE right way to com-

    municate with our con-

    gregation and our com-

    munity. Some people

    prefer print, others prefer

    digital and most everyone

    appreciates word-of-

    mouth! I will continue to

    work with multiple com-

    munications tools and

hope all of you will help

    my efforts by taking an

    active part in our church
