1st Sunday of Lent
Mark 1:12–15
Jesus was tempted 40 days by Satan. He was among wild beasts,
and the angels ministered to him.
T he Gospel for First Sunday of Lent always tells the story of Jesus’ 40 days of
being tested in the wilderness by Satan. It sets the tone, right at the beginning,
for our personal 40 days journey through Lent. Both Matthew (Lent 2014) and Luke
(Lent 2016) in their versions detail the 3 temptations of Jesus: the temptation of
acquiring material things, the temptation of testing God, the temptation of power.
But Mark, our 2015 Gospel, dispenses with details. In his usual concise style,
Mark summarizes the 40 days of Jesus’ temptation in one sentence: “Jesus was
among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.” (Mark 1:15) We don’t often think of Jesus being in need of
comforting and consolation from the angels, God’s messengers. And what Jesus’ personal temptations were is
left to our imaginations. But there you have it. Jesus—the Son of God become one of us, fully human—struggles
with the wild beasts inside of him, just as you and I do. To get through, Jesus needs the strength that is beyond
him: the strength of God, conveyed through the messengers of God who surround Jesus, just as those
messengers—the angels—surround us, to see us through.
In our Sunday’s First Reading, with the waters of the 40 days Flood
receding, the Lord places a rainbow in the in the sky as the promise to
Noah that the Lord never will destroy humanity again: “When I bring
clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the
covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings, so that
the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal
beings.” (Genesis 9:15) Paul reminds us in the Second Reading that the
Flood, and the promise, point to our Baptism. The waters of our Baptism
destroyed only our old sinful person, and made us new persons with a life ahead of us to be lived with Jesus. In
our Baptism, the Lord gave us his promise that, when the wild beasts inside of us torment us, he will be there,
ministering to us with his angels so that we, like Jesus, will make it through the time of trial. Father Paul Pluth
Prayer for Peace - In the quiet of the morning, as I wake to start the day, I feel God’s peace
around me and pray for it to stay. I pray for peace within my home, for peace among family and friends.
I pray for peace around the world, from dawn until day’s end. In the silence of the sunrise, I look toward
heaven and know that I must plant the seeds of peace and tend them so they grow.

All women of St. Mary: Do you know that when you register with St. Mary Parish that you become a member of “The Women of St. Mary”? The WOSM are very involved with raising funds and donate to several local charities, e.g. Small Miracles, Ryan’s House, Gifts from the Heart food bank. For our parish, we help fund gifts, receptions and other events needed for the Religious Education (RE) department outside of their budget. We provide a funeral reception for our parish families at a time of sorrow, send cards to parishioners that may need a cheery note
Our fund raisers are: A Garage Sale in May, baby shower for the Pregnancy Care Center in June, we provide a brunch for our fathers on Father’s Day also in June, and we have a Holiday Bazaar the first Saturday in December. If you have time available to attend our monthly meetings and wish to get involved with our missions you are invited to join us (few that we are). We are reaching out to you to expand our numbers. We do not pressure anyone. Give us a call if you have questions call 678-6536 We normally meet on the 1st Thursday of each month after the 12:10 pm Mass. The next meeting of the Women of St. Mary will be in Harrington Hall on Thursday, March 5th after the 12:10 pm Mass. Bring your lunch to eat during the meeting. Bring a friend and come join us for some fun and fellowship
~On another note if you have projects that you can work on now for the Bazaar please do so. If your storing space is limited please give us a call (678-65376) and we will see what we can do.

The Cross of Sorrows
Please join our R.E. kids this Lent and let Jesus carry your sorrows by writing them down and attaching your messages to the wood of the cross in the parish hall.
SAINT KATERI TEKAKWITHA is being honored all February. This morning the R.E. children were given blessed medals of St. Kateri and they learned to say a Litany of St. Kateri. She is the first ever person native to North America to become a saint. Fifty years after she died in Canada in the 1600s, the first convent for Indian nuns started in Mexico. There the Native sisters prayed daily for her sainthood and it happened in 2012. Meanwhile, Kateri’s gravestone reads: “The fairest flower that ever bloomed among red men.”
