MERCY SUNDAY MASSES THIS WEEKEND To further take advantage of the Graces Our Lord wants to give each of us in this Year of Mercy, our parish will

designate one Sunday each month as a “Mercy Sunday”. On these Sundays, at all Masses, you will have an opportunity to write out a prayer request to the Lord for a spiritual or material blessing needed in your family, for you personally, for someone in our parish or any need. They will be collected during the

normal time for the 2nd collection, after communion, placed in a basket near the altar and prayed over all month. As prayers are answered, contact the parish office and we will list them in the bulletin so we all can be more aware of the mercy of the Lord within our parish.

Our first Mercy Sunday Masses are this weekend, May 21/22, the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.

Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

Thanks to all who helped make my 25th Anniversary a wonderful celebration last week – especially the Catholic Daughters of the Americas for the terrific reception (ladies, you really know how to throw a beautiful party) and the Knights of Columbus for the Honor Guard at Mass. I feel very blessed by God and full of gratitude to Him, Our Lady and all of you. Oremus pro invicem! Today we begin our series of “Mercy Masses” for the Year of Mercy, which concludes on the Solemnity of Christ the King, this year November 22. One Sunday a month we will write out our prayer intentions, collect them, pray for them and share those that are answered with our parish office. We experience the mercy of God in our own lives, but we can see God’s action magnified through the action of His Grace in our wider parish family. With the celebration of the Solemnity of Pentecost last week, we conclude the season of Easter and begin Ordinary Time. During this season, we will follow the public ministry of Our Lord in an ordered way and seek to integrate the mystery of the gospel with our daily life in the family, at school, in the workplace and community. It is here that we ordinarily meet Christ and introduce Him to others. An inspiring image is that of the Holy Family, who for the most part lived hidden lives of Grace while fulfilling God’s plan and lighting up the world with love and the beauty of Holiness. This week we celebrate Trinity Sunday, the central mystery of our Christian Faith. God is revealed to us as a community of persons who give themselves to each other in love. Created in God’s image and likeness, we are each called to imitate this mission – to give ourselves in love cheerfully, generously to one another through the vocation God has called us to and that we have chosen. Next weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ and will give public witness to our belief in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist by a solemn procession with the Blessed Sacrament following the 5 p.m. Sunday Mass. We will process from the church through Old Town to our cemetery on Royal and Green Street and return to the church for prayer. All are invited to participate. Meet at the church at 6 p.m. An ice cream social will follow (see page 6 for more information). Father Ed Hathaway

SEMINARIAN SPRINT

St. Mary Catholic School Thursday, June 2nd, 2016

9th ANNUAL SEMINARIAN SPRINT

The students of St. Mary School will participate in the 9th Annual Seminarian Sprint on Thursday, June 2 in support of the education and formation of the seminarians from the Diocese of Arlington. The students solicit donations from sponsors in the weeks before the Seminarian Sprint.

Students and seminarians are ready to run as soon as the school day begins. The course takes them across the blacktop, out the Royal Street gate, and up Green Street. After the super-sized relay race, the students enjoy the opportunity to talk with the seminarians during lunch in the school cafeteria. The day concludes with the Awards Assembly. Two awards are presented: the first goes to the student with the highest amount of sponsorship money and the second goes to the class that brings in the most sponsorship money.

The funds raised will go to the Seminarian Education Endowment Fund. The Diocese provides each seminarian with an education, health insurance, housing and food. All donations will help supplement the education and formation of our future priests. If you wish to support the students’ efforts and contribute to the education and formation of our future priests, you can help! You may donate online at https://membership.faithdirect.net/VA713 or make checks payable to St. Mary Catholic School and mail to Elena Otero-Bigg, 400 Green Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
