Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary This Monday, August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of our parish. While the obligation to attend Holy Mass is suspended since this solemnity falls on a Monday, it is still a great feast day in the Catholic Church and I encourage all to attend one of our Masses that day. We commemorate the 5th Glorious Mystery of the ro-sary when we recall that “at the end of her life on earth Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven, just as Enoch, Elijah and perhaps others had been before her. It’s also necessary to keep in mind what the Assumption is not. Some people think Catho-lic believe Mary “ascended” into heaven. That’s not correct. Christ, by His own power, ascended into Heaven. Mary was assumed or taken up into heaven by God. She didn’t do it under her own power….. “Mary freely and actively cooperated in a unique way with God’s plan of salvation (Lk 1:38; Gal 4:4). Like any mother, she was never separated from the suffering of her Son (Lk 2:35) and Scripture promises that those who share in the sufferings of Christ will share in His glory (Rom 8:17). Since she suffered a unique interior martyrdom, it is appropriate that Jesus would honor her with a unique glory. All Chris-tians believe that one day we will all be raised in a glorious form and then caught up and rendered immaculate to be with Jesus forever (1Thes 4:17; Rev 21:27). As the first per-son to say “yes” to the Good News of Jesus (Lk 1:38), Mary is in a sense the prototypical Christian, and received early the blessings we will all one day be given.” – Catholic Answers

Today we want to say thank you and good-bye to the direc-tor of our 8:30 a.m. ensemble, Patricia Jarrell. Patricia has been the director of this ensemble for over 10 years and we thank her for her dedication and leadership over this time. Although we are sad to see Patricia go, we wish her well in her move to Winchester and know that Sacred Heart Catholic Church there will be receiving a wonderful addition to their music ministry. Taking Patricia’s place is Jo-Ann Hovey. Jo-Ann is an ac-complished singer who has not only sung with the 8:30 a.m. ensemble for many years but has also sung throughout the diocese and in the choir of the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. God bless you for spreading the word!

Introducing our new priest-in-residence, Fr. Kevin Barnekow…. I was born and raised in Wisconsin, in a working class suburb of Milwaukee. I obtained a degree in electrical engineering in 2004 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering where my dad was a professor. I decided to leave graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2005 to enter St. Francis De Sales Seminary in hopes of being ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Archbishop Dolan appointed me to seminary in Louvain, Belgium, where I lived for four years at the American College of the Immaculate Conception, a seminary in Europe operated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. In 2011, I was ordained a priest and received my first appointment as a parochial vicar. In 2014, I received my second appointment as parochial vicar, which included the opportunity to be an adjunct instruc-tor in sacred Scripture at our local seminary. More recently, my Archbishop asked me to study psychology for the Archdiocese, and after a period of careful consideration, I was happy to find the Institute for the Psychological Scienc-es at Divine Mercy University in Arlington and to be accepted to the program they offer in clinical psychology. Despite living abroad, I have never felt that I am anything other than a Midwesterner. I grew up around fishing, camp-ing and hunting. When I was a kid with my two brothers, bikes and bologna sandwiches meant freedom. My parents still live in the same house where I grew up. I have four young nephews. I love being a Catholic. I am honored to be a priest. My favorite pope is Leo XIII. I am thankful to your pastor Fr. Hathaway and your parish priests, Frs. Barnes and Haissig, and Fr. Bresnahan as well, for their hospitality. I am already thankful for the generosity of St. Mary’s and its parishioners. — Fr. Kevin Barnekow
