Third Sunday of Lent February 28, 2016

SANCTUARY LAMP

FEBRUARY 28-MARCH 5 IN MEMORY OF

SHIRLEY PROULX BY FAMILY

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” - For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.—Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you do not even have a buck-et and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this liv-ing water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his chil-dren and his flocks?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water well-ing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors wor-ship on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Fa-ther neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Fa-ther seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is com-ing, the one called the Christ; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one (who is) speaking with you.” Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him. When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. Many more began to believe in him because of his word, and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.” John 4:5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42

Do you contemplate truth much like the woman at the well?

THE PASTOR’S PONDERANCES Today the Lord meets a very insightful person at the well. This wonderful and grace-filled encounter emphasiz-es by way of words and symbols that each of us, through our belief/faith, has a life-giving spring welling up for our benefit and for others as well. Fr. Daniel

24 HOURS FOR THE LORD JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY OPPORTUNITY

In a universal effort to make Christ’s mercy more mani-fest during the season of Lent, the Holy Father has asked that parishes worldwide make the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion and Eucharistic Adoration available for a 24-hour peri-od on March 4

th and 5

th.

In our Seacoast Deanery, we respond to the Holy Fa-ther’s request in our designated pilgrimage site, Immmacu-late Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH. On March 4

th Holy Mass at 7:00 pm will open the 24 hours.

Candlelight Procession will follow as the Blessed Sacra-ment is carried throughout the church and brought up close to those within the pews. As you pray for your needs, for mercy to be appreciated, received and manifested, you will be able to reach out to touch the Humeral veil the priest uses to carry Jesus in the monstrance—a “touch the hem of His garment” procession. During this time, reflective song and music will fill the church as we pray for one an-other. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament continues through the night and all day Saturday, March 5

th, until the

start of 4:00 pm Mass. Exposition will resume after Mass. Night prayer and Benediction will complete the 24 hours at 8:00 pm. Confessions will be heard on Friday March 4, from 8:30 pm to 10 pm. On Saturday, March 5, from 9 am to 12 noon; 1 pm to 3:30 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. The confession-als are located in the back of the church. For more infor-mation, call 436-4555 or visit www.corpuschristinh.org.

SR. LUCIE SAYS

The Third Sunday in Lent marks the mid-

point of Lent. For those preparing to become

Catholic, it is a special time of grace. We focus

on the Gospel from John sometimes titled “the

woman at the well.” This week and the fol-

lowing two weeks they will experience the Scru-

tinies. When one scrutinizes something, they

look or examine in a more detailed or deeper

way—such is the case with our only Catechu-

men, Charles Loeffler, from St. Peter’s. As a

twinned community, we unite both in prayer

and in using the RCIA readings from Year A.

This is a good time for those who have been

through this process to relive those memories.

Let us unite with Catechumens and Candi-

dates from all parishes.
