After the defeat of the Byzantine Empire and the capture of Constantinople in 1453, the Ottoman

Empire waged constant war with Christian Europe. In 1571 the Muslims assembled an enormous fleet of

triremes (rowed warships) in a Greek port near the Gulf of Lepanto of the Ionian Sea to invade Italy. A

bastard son of the King of Spain, Don Juan of Austria, sent out urgent appeals to the nations of the Chris-

tian world warning of the coming attack. He finally gathered a sturdy fleet of rapidly mass produced ships

equipped with modern armaments. Ships came from Venice and Genoa, from Spain and from the Knights

of Malta. Blessed by Pope Pius V, the fleet sailed to Greece to catch the Turkish Armada before it could

sail for Italy. The Christians were filled with fervor because the Turks had made constant raids for centu-

ries on the ports of the Mediterranean to capture slaves for their harems and to row their war ships. Many

of the almost 15,000 Christian slaves rowing the Turkish ships had been captured in this way. The slaves

were starved, beaten, chained to their oars and living in their own waste.

The 212 ships of the Christian force met 280 ships of the Turkish Armada on October 7, 1571. All

of Europe feared the outcome. Pope Pius had asked everyone in Europe to pray the rosary for victory.

Don Juan aimed his flagship directly at the flagship of Ali Pasha, the Turkish Admiral. The fleets

fought all day. At the end of the afternoon the Muslim flagship was captured. The huge green sail with

1,000 golden names of Allah went into the water. The head of Ali Pasha was raised on a pike to demoral-

ize the Turks. In the end, the Christian fleet was victorious, losing only 50 ships. 240 of the Turkish ships

were captured or sunk and 12,000 Christian slaves were freed. It was the greatest sea battle in history.

It was reported that Pope Pius V got up from a meeting in the Vatican that afternoon , went over to

a window, and exclaimed “The Christian fleet is victorious”. He had seen a vision. Europe was spared.

The Battle of Lepanto was first celebrated liturgically as “Our Lady of Victory”. Pope Clement XI ex-

tended the feast to the Universal Church in 1716 when it was renamed “Our Lady of the Rosary”. Pope

Clement XI canonized Saint Pope Pius V in 1712.

The Battle of Lepanto is still remembered by Muslims today. Osama Bin Laden used it in several of

his speeches to encourage his Al Qaeda troops to take revenge. We must remember it also. Vivat Jesus

ROAD CLEANUP ROAD CLEANUP ROAD CLEANUP ROAD CLEANUP The last road cleanup to pick up trash along

Wolf Road was very poorly attended. Only four

knights showed up to perform our council’s “adopt

a highway” task. We can do better!

The four knights shown above did the work

that is usually done by nine or more men. Everyone

who can make it should come and help on October

8 to lighten the load and perform our civic duty as

Knights of Columbus! Vivat Jesus

RIGHT TO LIFE MONTH RIGHT TO LIFE MONTH RIGHT TO LIFE MONTH RIGHT TO LIFE MONTH The month of October is designated every year to

celebrate the right to life.

This year, Mayor Joe Werner of Mokena will

designate the first week of October as Right to Life

Week in Mokena by a proclamation at the Village

Board meeting on Monday September 26 at 7 PM.

Show your support for this annual event.

Up to a hundred dedicated Christians, in-

cluding Fourth Degree Knights in regalia, will dem-

onstrate for life on US 30 in New Lenox on Sunday

October 2 from 2:30 until 3:30 PM. Participants

should show up at 2:00 in the parking lot of the

Harris Bank at Cedar and US 30. Join them!

Council knights will place hundreds of

wooden crosses with signs asking all to pray for an

end to abortion. Crosses will be placed on 191st

Street next to the Noonan Academy starting at 2

PM October 1. Come and help.

The last two pages of this newsletter are

the annual flyer for The March for Life! Vivat Jesus

NEWMAN INSTITUTE NEWMAN INSTITUTE NEWMAN INSTITUTE NEWMAN INSTITUTE An introductory session for the new Diocesan

Catechetical Institute will be offered in the Deacon

Jim Fitzgerald Room of St Mary Church at 7:00 PM

on Thursday October 6 and will be repeated at 9:00

AM on Saturday October 8. The Institute will be a

three year series of seminars that are based on the

catechism. All of us can benefit from this and

should consider attending.

MEMORIAL MASS MEMORIAL MASS MEMORIAL MASS MEMORIAL MASS The bylaws of Knights of Columbus coun-

cils normally require that the council hold an an-

nual Memorial Mass for knights and family mem-

bers who have returned to Our Lord during the

past year. In this area, the Joliet Assembly sched-

ules and organizes the annual Mass for the twelve

councils that make up the Assembly. This year the

Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday night, No-

vember 10 at 7:30 PM at St Jude Church in Joliet.

St Jude is on McDonough Street in Joliet about

four city blocks West of Larkin Avenue. There will

be a reception after the Mass.

At the Memorial Mass the names of those

being remembered are read for each council. Sub-

mit names for those persons who should be re-

membered to the Grand Knight.

The Memorial Mass is for all knights, their

families and friends. The Assembly will provide an

honor guard and the Mass will be conducted by

Father John McGeean, Faithful Friar of the Joliet

Assembly. Vivat Jesus

bus will hold its annual dinner for the Bishop on No-

vember 5 at St Anne’s Church in Crest Hill. The

Joliet Diocesan share of money collected in the an-

nual Newman Fund collection is presented to the

Bishop at this event. A Mass celebrated by all three

Bishops is followed by a great dinner. See the form

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ORGANIZATION KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ORGANIZATION KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ORGANIZATION KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ORGANIZATION New members regularly ask how the Knights of Columbus is organized. The chart below is intended to

show the three organizations that we are associated with here in Mokena. The St Mary Council is part of

the regular organization in the Knights, subordinate to the State Deputy who is subordinate to the Su-

preme Knight. District Deputies represent the state deputy for groups of councils. The Joliet Assembly of

the Fourth Degree is subordinate to a District Master who is subordinate to the Supreme Master. The

Joliet Chapter represents all the councils in the Diocese of Joliet and represents the Knights to the

Bishop. In each State, the State Deputy represents the Supreme Knight for all groups.
