The first reading from the first book of Samuel relates the story of Hannah fulfilling her promise to God after the birth of her son Samuel. Hannah had prayed for a child and made a promise to dedicate the child to God after birth (1 Samuel 1:10-11). Samu-el became a great prophet who anointed the first king of Israel. Elkanah and Hannah, parents of Samuel, were devoted Jews and wanted their child to follow the tenets of the Lord. They acknowledged that their child was a gift from the Lord. They taught him in the way of the Lord.
In the gospel, Mary and Joseph took Jesus with them to the temple for the Jewish Passover. Jesus, then twelve years old, was considered old enough to experience the greatest Jewish feast. At the end of the worship, the child stayed back while his parents began their journey back home. They only realized that Jesus was missing after a day’s journey. The father must have thought the child was with the mother while Mary must have thought the child was with Joseph. Once they realized Jesus was not with them, they returned immediately to the temple area to look for him. When they found Jesus, he told them he had to be about his father’s business. This is one of the recorded mo-ments in the scriptures when the young Jesus talked about his ontological connection with God the Father. He has come to fulfill the mission of making the Father known. Jesus obeyed his parents and returned with them to Nazareth.
Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family - Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Every family is unique, and within a family, each person is also unique. Each family has its own successes, difficul-ties, and struggles, but we can all trust in God to guide and direct us. Holiness in the family is first about obedience to God and gratitude to him for the gift of our children and parents. It is also about respect for the individuals that make up the family – the father, the mother, the children – each one recognizing the dignity of the other. Holiness is being enthusiastic about our faith and sharing it with our children and the children making this faith their own.
There are many essential ingredients that make a holy family. These include faith in God and love of God. I think the following are three other essentials for a holy family: Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Love. When families appreciate each other in small and big things, when they learn to say “I am sorry” when one is hurt, and when they are able to express their love for each other, there is bound to be joy and peace in such a home, which will enhance the holiness of the family.
As we celebrate today’s feast, we pray for our families, asking for the intercession of the Holy Fami-ly of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We pray for families experiencing difficulties in living together, di-vorced families, single parents, and parents with difficult children.
With today being the last Sunday of the calendar year, and as we usher in the year 2016, may Mary, the Mother of God, make of our homes a holy dwelling place for God!

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Imagine: three New Year’s celebrations in a little over a month! In late November, Advent began the new liturgical year; December 8, the Jubilee Year of Mercy; this coming Friday, the New Year 2016. In
today’s Gospel, after three days of anguish, Mary tells Jesus how desperately she and Joseph have been searching for him. Mary could be speaking for the whole human race. With reli-gious persecutions raging, international and domestic conflicts seething, our family and friends suffering various difficulties, not to mention our own personal problems, how much our world needs Jesus as another New Year veiled in mystery begins! As we pray for God’s mercy to enfold our world and embrace each of us in 2016, let our New Year’s resolution be to live the Jubilee Year of Mercy by being for others, as Mary was, a channel of God’s mercy and an instrument of Christ’s peace.

Our parish has grown so much from mod-est beginnings. We have wonderful parish facilities and
have added to it by acquiring the former Lakeland Baptist Church on Isaacks Rd. Our church, school, Family Life Center, and offices provide comfortable spaces to wor-
ship and minister to our spiritual needs, but just like your home, these facilities come at a cost. We have expenses, for our mortgage, utilities, and general upkeep. We also
have a wonderful staff to assist you in pursuing your faith. Our life journey is a walk in faith, from
birth/baptism, to death, and we are intertwined with our church. Since everyone benefits from these facilities, it is important that all members of this parish help in the fi-
nancial cost.
We are once again blessed this year to have a number of parishioners who agreed to match your Christmas dona-tions. Please include St. Mary Magdalene on your Christ-

for our children, ages 0-3, while working in the church nurse-ry. Will work 4-10 hours per week under the direction of the
Nursery Coordinator and Pastor.
Requirements: • Experienced in the care of children 0-3 years of age with
the ability to adapt to and interact with a variety of per-sonalities and characteristics.
• 18 years of age or older • Must have a high school diploma or GED • Willing to submit to background check • Must be willing to work weekends

1 Church, 1 Day Prayer Initiative A 24-hour Prayer vigil on the 3rd Friday of every month
Can you imagine what would happen if all the churches in our city, regardless of denomination, joined together in continuous prayer? That’s what the 1 Church, 1 Day Pray-er Initiative is about. KSBJ 89.3 radio has committed to sponsor this program as part of their 5-year strategic plan and will work closely with pastors and prayer coordinators from 30 area churches to assure success in this massive undertaking to remove all evil from our city by establishing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week prayer.
Our official day of prayer will be the 3rd Friday of every month.
Each church will cover a specific day of the month with volunteers committed to cover one hour in prayer for 24 hours. Two or more people are preferred for each hour, if possible. This is very similar to our Adoration program, but instead of coming to the chapel or church to pray, each volunteer will pray at the location of their choice during their assigned hour: home, work, lunch, quiet time, chapel, your choice, as long as you pray for the full hour. Prayers for our church and community will be prayed for first, fol-lowed by a set of assigned prayers that will eventually cover 7 spheres of influence in the greater Houston area.
Details will be forthcoming, and volunteers are being ac-cepted and assigned now in anticipation of this incredible event!

A Message from Cardinal DiNardo Regarding the Holy Doors of Mercy in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston During the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
In accord with Misericordiae vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, paragraph 3, prom-
ulgated by His Holiness to inaugurate this Holy Year of Mercy, I hereby decree that a Holy Door be opened at the following churches, which will serve also as pilgrimage sites during the Holy Year of Mercy:

The Holy Father has stated that, in order to receive this Jubilee Indulgence, this passage through a Holy Door must be linked with saying the Profession of Faith, pray-
ing for the Holy Father and his intentions, and going to a celebration of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. With regards to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the Holy Father further instructed that “each time that one of the
faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indulgence.”
Please note that those who, due to illness or other legitimate reason, are unable to leave their place of residence may nonethe-less obtain the Jubilee indulgence by uniting themselves in spirit with the faithful and offering their prayers and suffering in
accord with the objectives of the Year of Mercy. Similarly, those who are incarcerated “may obtain the indulgence in the chap-els of the prisons.”

Youth Ministry News
“Youth Nights”: Weekly youth events will return this week! There will be a high school youth event this Sun-day, January 3rd from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the Youth Room; we will focus on a New Year’s reflection and have a Mario Smash Brothers tournament (bring your Wii remote). Our middle school youth will meet on Thursday, January 7th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm in the Youth Room; join us for a New Year’s reflection and “sardines.” Be sure to invite a friend… and why not bring a snack to share? Please join our new “Remind” text message groups for high school and middle school youth (see below!).
Youth Adoration Hour: Please make plans to join our second Eucharistic Adoration event on Monday, January 4th from 7:00pm – 8:00pm in the church. Fr. Felix will lead this worship experience, which is open to ALL parish-ioners and families… although the event is specially geared to our youth! This will be an opportunity for prayer and reflection, along with a special message and music to enhance this time of worship! We will follow the adora-tion with a complimentary pizza dinner in the Family Life Center.
2016 Confirmation CLASS: Parents who missed the “Parent / Sponsor Meeting” last Thursday, December 17th should contact the Youth Office immediately to pick up the materials and information discussed at this important gathering. All candidates should have selected a sponsor to accompany them during the Confirmation faith jour-ney… The “Sponsor / Candidate Meeting” is scheduled for Friday, January 8th at 7:00pm in the Family Life Cen-ter. Our weekly Confirmation sessions begin on Wednesday, January 13th from 7:00pm – 9:00pm; candidates are allowed only two absences from the Wednesday classes.
CCE / Faith Formation Classes: Our parish CCE / Faith Formation classes are currently on Christmas break, and all classes will resume next Sunday, January 10, 2016! If you are a baptized, confirmed adult who is in com-munion with the Catholic Church, we could use some help with substitute catechists at our Sunday afternoon, Tuesday evening, or Wednesday evening CCE sessions. The Living God Lives in Me
Ivana Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation The message and miracle of Christmas is that God is with us: Emmanuel. We who have been baptized in Christ Jesus hold the Son of God in our hearts. The living God lives in me. The living presence of Christ is God’s gift to us; what we do with that gift is our thanksgiving for such incredible love. It is my belief that many people (if not most) walk around living their lives day to day without truly understand-ing and embracing the fact that God loves them with an incredible, unspeakable love. The thought of being loved that much is more than many people can bear. We say we believe in God’s love, but we don’t allow ourselves to truly accept it. We don’t believe because we can’t imagine that God could love us after so many wrong things we have done; we don’t feel worthy, and we have seen time and time again “proof” that it can-not possibly be so—people make promises and then let us down. Bad things happen to good people. Our own failures and those of others make life difficult. We have to put up with one another. Our lives are filled with suffering. We have to continually remind ourselves that even though these things are a reality, God is good all the time— and he wants goodness for us. Jesus, born in not-so-comfortable circumstances, reminds us that pain and suffering are not the last word—God’s love for us is the last word. Jesus, whose life was in danger as soon as he was born, reminds us that God is our protection, our comfort and our hope. Jesus, who was baptized in order to make the water holy for us, reminds us that we who are baptized into him are bap-tized into both his death and resurrection. Friends, this is our heritage, our promise and our lasting joy! As we are now in the Year of Mercy, your “homework” assignment is to mediate specifically and regularly on God’s love for you. There is only one reason Jesus, the God-man, came to be with us—to offer God’s love and save us from our sins. God knows we need to embrace his love in order to be empowered to do anything else. Too often we reach for other things to take the place of the emptiness and longing we often feel be-cause we don’t or we can’t accept God’s love. Lack of understanding God’s love influences our choices and the decisions we make. Many people are out of communion with the Church, and the root cause is not under-standing God’s love for them, which always prompts a desire to love and serve him in return. If everything was all right with the world, God would have stayed in heaven. Instead, God became “a man like us in all things but sin.” His presence in the crib in Bethlehem points to the fact that we need help. Jesus in the cradle is a testimony not to the progress of humanity, but to our misery. Even now, two thousand years later, with all our technology, all of our discoveries, our advancement, progress and possessions, we need Jesus even more now than ever because none of these satisfies our deepest human desire to love and to be loved. Jesus invites us to let him into our lives so that he can satisfy our greatest needs and fulfill our greatest long-ings in fulfillment of a desire for love which only God can give. For what are you longing today? Something, no doubt, that continually tugs at your heart. For what are you searching? It can undoubtedly be found in the arms of those who reach out to us in relationship: the persons of our neighbors, our friends, our families and especially those who are in need. Christ comes to us now as he did then—in the persons of the small, the helpless, the weak, the poor, those in danger and those who have no one to care for them except us. In loving them, we find ourselves loving Jesus himself; thus, by be-coming like Christ, we participate in the very life of God. What more could fulfill our longings than living in Christ who lives for us? Consider God’s immense love for you and respond to that love. Allow the reality of God’s love to take possession of you and see in what ways it affects your life. Give yourself over to the love of God and see how it empowers you to love others as well. Pray about this in your daily prayer. Ask God to reveal to you the magnitude of his love. Pray not for things—they will come and go. Pray for a brilliant under-standing of what it means to be loved by God. Pray that everyone in our parish will experience the same thing. May the love of God permeate our lives and the lives of our loved ones this Christmas season and throughout this Year of Mercy. La primera lectura del primer libro de Samuel cuenta la historia de Ana cum-pliendo su promesa de Dios después del nacimiento de su hijo Samuel. Ana ha-bía orado por un hijo e hizo una promesa a dedicar el niño a Dios después de su nacimiento (1 Samuel 1:10-11). Samuel se convirtió en un gran profeta quien ungió al primer rey de Israel. Elcana y Ana, los padres de Samuel, eran judíos devotos y querían que su hijo siguiera los mandamientos del Señor. Ellos reco-
nocieron que su hijo era un regalo del Señor. Ellos le enseñaron el camino del Señor.
En el evangelio, María y José llevaron a Jesús con ellos al templo para la Pascua judía. Je-sús, que en ese tiempo tenía doce años, estaba considerado de suficiente edad para experi-mentar la gran fiesta judía. Ya que terminaron de rendir culto, el niño se quedó en el tem-plo mientras sus padres comenzaron a regresar a su casa. Después de un día de camino, María y José se dieron cuenta que Jesús no estaba con ellos. Pudo ser que José pensó que el niño estaba con María y María pudo haber pensado que Jesús estaba con José. Cuando se dieron cuenta que Jesús no estaba con ellos, se regresaron inmediatamente al templo a buscarlo. Cuando encontraron a Jesús, él les dijo que tenía que ocuparse de las cosas de su padre. Este es uno de los momentos grabados en las escrituras cuando el joven Jesús habla-ba acerca de su conexión ontológica con Dios Padre. Él ha venido a cumplir la misión de hacer conocer al Padre. Jesús obedeció a sus padres y regresó con ellos a Nazaret.
Hoy celebramos la Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José. Cada familia es úni-ca, y entre cada familia, cada persona también es única. Cada familia tiene sus propios lo-gros, dificultades y luchas, pero todos podemos confiar en Dios para guiarnos y dirigirnos. La santidad en la familia se trata primeramente de obediencia a Dios y agradecimiento a él por el regalo de nuestros niños y padres. También se trata de respeto por los individuos que forman la familia—el padre, la madre, los hijos—cada uno reconociendo la dignidad de los otros. La santidad es ser entusiasmados por nuestra fe y compartirla con nuestros hijos y que los hijos hagan suya esta fe.
Hay muchos ingredientes esenciales que forman una familia santa. Estos incluyen fe en Dios y amor a Dios. Yo pienso que los tres siguientes ingredientes también son esenciales para una familia sagrada: Agradecimiento, Perdón y Amor. Cuando las familias se aprecian a cada uno en cosas grandes y pequeñas, cuando aprenden a decir “Lo siento” cuando uno de ellos es ofendido, y cuando ellos pueden expresar su amor por cada uno, ciertamente ha-brá paz y alegría en este tipo de hogar, lo cual mejorará la santidad de la familia.
Mientras celebramos la fiesta de hoy, oremos por nuestras familias, pidiendo por la interce-sión de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José. Oramos por las familias que están expe-rimentando dificultades al vivir juntos, familias divorciadas, padres solteros y padres con niños difíciles.
Ya que hoy es el último domingo del año y ya que vamos a darle la bienvenida al año 2016, ¡que María, la Madre de Dios, haga de nuestros hogares un lugar santo para Dios!

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Imagina: ¡tres celebraciones de Año Nuevo en el transcurso de menos de un mes! Al final de noviem-bre, con el Adviento, empezó el Nuevo Año Litúrgi-
co; luego el 8 de diciembre, el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia y este viernes que viene, el Año Nuevo 2016. En el Evangelio de hoy, después de tres días
de angustia, María le dice a Jesús lo preocupada que ella y José habían estado buscándolo. María podría estar hablando por toda la humanidad. Con violentas persecuciones religiosas, conflictos nacionales e internacionales en plena ebullición, nues-tra familia y amigos sufriendo de varias dificultades, sin men-cionar nuestros propios problemas personales, ¡qué tanto nues-tro mundo necesita a Jesús ya que otro Nuevo Año empieza
cubierto de misterio! Al orar para que la misericordia de Dios se muestre a nuestro mundo y envuelva a cada uno de nosotros
este 2016, que nuestra resolución para este Año Nuevo sea vivir el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia para ser a los demás, tal como María lo fue, un instrumento de la misericordia de Dios y
de la paz de Cristo.
