Dear Parishioners,
Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, represents a real turning point in the life of the nascent Church. Saul (whose name is later changed by God to Paul) had recently entered Jerusalem after an encounter with the Lord on the road to Damascus. That encounter had left him blind. In his blindness, he continued on to Damascus. There, a man named Ananias was directed by the Holy Spirit to see Saul and explain the gospel and Resurrection of Jesus to him. When he does the blindness leaves him. Saul began to preach in Damascus.
Up to that point, Saul had orders to persecute the followers of “the Way” which was the title given to the first Christians. His orders were to bind and imprison those followers. In some cases, he even consented to their death by stoning. This left him with a reputation. Because of this many of the disciples refused to believe that his conversion was genuine.
In our reading today Saul enters Jerusalem. The disciples there are afraid of him. They are holding him to his reputation. Barnabas, one of the 12 Apostles, takes him under his wing. Together they move about freely in Jerusalem continuing to preach about what they had witnessed. I write about this today for two reasons.
The first is that we have a tendency to hold people to their reputations. It is important to be kind to one another in any circumstance because the reality is that underneath the face we present to the world there is a great battle going on in each one of us. This is the fight for who we are and who God really wants us to be.
Secondly to encourage conversion. You do not have to hold yourself to the reputation you have. You can break free. I will always remember John Paul II’s words, “We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus.” You are more than your reputation.
The result is evident in the reading:
“The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord,
and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers.”
Finally, I would like to thank everyone for their participation (in whatever way) in the In the Spirit Dinner and Auction fundraiser. It was a wonderful night for all who attended. Your amazing generosity and support raised more than $100,000. Thank you!
Chairs in the sanctuary (where the altar is in
the Church) are designated for a specific
purpose or person. Most Catholic churches
that we enter usually have three chairs
designated for priests and deacons. The same
is true for St. Mary’s in Greenville. Someone
recently asked me why servers do not occupy
the chairs next to the priest when there is no
deacon at the Mass. This is a good question.
Ideally, the three chairs in the sanctuary are
meant to be filled by the bishop in the center
with assisting deacons to his left and right.
However, the bishop cannot make it to all
200+ Masses in the diocese on the weekend.
This would be impossible. So, he has priests
to take his place during the Masses. The two
chairs to the left and right are meant to be
filled by deacons. This Spring we will have 2
acting deacons for the parish. The reason why
the chairs are left empty is for two reasons:
First that people know that the chair is
reserved for a deacon. Second, the empty
chair would allow people to see that there is a
position in ministry that may need to be filled.
It will be great to see the full complement of
clerical roles in the near future.
Paper dumpster returns The paper dumpster will be here for the week-
end of May 5 & 6 and will be on site until
Tuesday, May 15th. Please flatten and save
your cardboard boxes, as well as other paper.

Weekly Stewardship Thought In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that God is
glorified when a disciple, grafted in Christ,
produces abundantly and bears much
fruit. The disciple must then be
a good steward of that abundance.
