19th Sunday of Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

From the Pastor Greetings!

Fr. Michael McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus Catholic fraternal organization, will be beatified on October 31, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints made the announcement on its website and Twitter page July 20.

A miracle credited to the intercession of McGivney was approved by the Vatican and announced by Pope Francis on May 27. A child who was diagnosed as terminally ill in the womb was miraculously healed following prayers for the intercession of Fr. McGivney.

The priest’s beatification Mass is expected to be celebrated in his native Connecticut.

McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut, 1882. Initially, the organization was intended to assist widows and their families upon the deaths of their husbands. It has grown into a worldwide Catholic fraternal order, with more than 2 million members carrying out works of charity and evangelization across the globe including our own parish’s #2046 Msgr. Hugh O’Sullivan Council. The Knights also offer life insurance policies to their members.

In 2018, the Knights’ 16,000 councils worldwide donated more than $185 million to charity and gave over 76 million hours of hands-on service in 2018, worth over $1.9 billion according to a valuation of volunteer work by the Independent Sector. Their volunteer work included support for the Special Olympics, coat drives, and food drives for needy families.

Between 2017 and 2018, the Knights raised and delivered $2 million for the Iraqi town of Karamles; the Knights have helped Christian survivors of the ISIS genocide in the town resettle in their homes and rebuild for the future.

In an audience granted to Supreme Knight Carl Anderson earlier this year, Pope Francis praised the organization’s “particular faithful witness to the sacredness and dignity of human life, evident at both the local and national levels.”

He also noted the Knights’ dedication to aiding, “both materially and spiritually, those Christian communities in the Middle East that are suffering the effects of violence, war and poverty.” “In our world, marked by divisions and inequalities, the generous commitment of your Order to serve all in need offers, especially to young people, an important inspiration to overcome a globalization of indifference and build together a more just and inclusive society,” Pope Francis said in February.

Beatification, being declared “blessed” by the Church, is the final step of recognition before a person can be declared a saint. Father McGivney will become the fourth U.S.-born man to be beatified, joining Bl. Stanley Rother, Bl. James Miller, and Bl. Solanus Casey. While the Church has recognized three women born in the United States as saints--St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Katharine Drexel, and St. Kateri Tekawitha--there have been no U.S.-born canonized men.

I am happy to announce that Jason Simon now serves as the Grand Knight of our local Knights of Columbus Council housed on Haynes Station Rd. and I recently began serving the Council as the Chaplain. I look forward to working with Jason and the Council particularly as we strive to grow in faith, hope, and love as Catholic men who pray together, serve together, and witness to our unity in Christ and His Church.

Ministry Spotlight A friendly reminder about the Meal Train Ministry that we offer. A lot of people don't know this great ministry exists, and this is separate from our funeral dinner ministry. This ministry is for those that have had a life experience and are in need of meals (new baby, sickness, etc). For more information on this great ministry please contact Jordan Bittel or Father Brian.

From the Pastor Continued

Last, but not least, I want to publicly thank David O’Bryan, Randy Howard, and Emett Barnett for installing our new door in the sacristy of the Church and for reinstalling the Ambry case that houses the Holy Oils. Tim Mitchell also assisted us with some carpet work. Well done, good and faithful servants! I want to publicly thank St. Mary’s PTO for paying and installing the new swings located next to the new Middle School pavilion across the street from the Grade School. As always, your generous support of the school is appreciated! I also want to thank Emett Barnett and his hardworking nephew Harrison Barnett for spreading a new load of mulch on the Grade School playground. Well done, good and faithful servants! Lastly, hats off to Bruce and Brenda Hagan for the new 175th Anniversary quilt and casing that is now displayed in the entrance of our parish hall. It’s beautiful to behold! Thank you for sharing your time and talent with the Church!

Peace, joy and love, Fr. Brian J. Roby Pastor

High School Youth Ministry Small Groups Due to Covid-19, the scope of Youth Ministry is ever changing. In order to continue working with and ministering to the youth in this parish, I am convinced we need to begin thinking “small.” This new endeavor is the future of youth ministry and I ask for your support as parents to help move our youth in this direction. I have stated this before and I will reiterate it now—it has been shown that in order to foster a bigger and more authentic faith, we have to start small (meaning the small group model). Living in a small group community has proven to be an invaluable way in which young people can explore their faith as well as talk through the big questions they have about it.

The goal of this group is to be a place where your youth can share their faith and life experience with their peers and find support and guidance in life. Our hope is that their experience collaborates with you, the parents, with what you are already doing with your youth at home so we can help your child grow in authentic faith and community.

The Nuts and Bolts of a Small Group Experience: Our hope is that Small Groups will meet twice a month (starting in September) whenever and wherever the small group decides. Youth will be placed in groups with their friends. The hope is to bolster already existing relationships and help them to grow spiritually while providing a safe space for conversation. We know it is not possible for youth to be at every gathering, but we hope they will be able to attend most. Meetings will last about an hour to an hour and a half with occasional special gathering for fellowship (movie, game night, something fun, etc). Small Group Leaders will try to pick times that are convenient and available for all participants.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this ministry. Moving forward, Sunday Night Youth Meetings (large groups) will only meet once a month on the 4th Sunday of the month from 6-8 PM. My goal is to move youth into meeting with their small groups during the off-weeks. In order to ensure the safety of our youth all gatherings (large and small) will utilize masks and/or six feet of distance.

Please know that if you plan to send your child to St. Mary of the Woods School or Trinity High School you may begin banking your Scrip now. School Happenings I think a lot about how much people have been through this year. It has been a tough year for most people. I say most, because I have had a few people say that not much has changed for them. For the majority, things have changed a great deal. We cannot necessarily control what happens to us, but we can choose how we react. I have been down about the uncertainty of the world a few times to the point of frustration and tears. I am not going to sit here and pretend I have not! Normally, following my point that I feel I cannot handle one more mandate or one more change, I remember that it is true I cannot. With the Holy Spirit however, we can do anything. I will tell you I have had wonderful role models through the years. I knew my father for 39 years. I tried to think about how many times I heard him complain through the years and I could not think of one time that I heard him complain. Here was a person that lost his legs at the age of 20, and walked on artificial limbs for the next 46 years. He got up and walked when he had blisters, when his legs were sore and never complained. He lost his father in a car accident at the age of 30 and he lost his mother to cancer when he was in his early 40s. My brother died in a car crash at the age of 25 and that was the most broken I had seen him, but he said very little and I cannot remember him complaining. He was diagnosed with cancer of the gallbladder right before he turned 66 and he showed us how to gracefully die and still did not complain much if at all. About a month before he passed, he told my aunt that with everything that had happened along the way, he had had a great life. He had a great wife, 4 wonderful kids and (at the time) 12 grandkids that were in his eyes nearly perfect. It truly is all about perspective! He could have gotten down and lived a very different life after he lost his legs. We all have the opportunity every day to decide how we want to live our lives. I am glad I had great examples to look up to. My mom is another example; she was my dad’s rock and pushed him to be his best like she does all of us. We must look to the examples of positive people that show us how to live. There are saints walking amongst us every day. In a world where so much negativity exists, we need to follow the examples of those who give us every reason to look for the good in people and the world.

Happy Sunday!

Faith Formation

PREP—Something New is Coming! One of the greatest gifts that we can give within our stewardship is our time. Could

God be calling you to give the gift of Faith to a young person in our Parish through either

being a catechist or a catechist assistant?

I will be inviting parishioners to consider giving the gift of their time to this area of ministry. If I ask you please prayerfully

19th Sunday of Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

Greetings from Joe Bland What does Heaven Think?

Last week, we talked about fear and how fear divides us. But that’s not the plan of Jesus. He is a multiplier. This week, I want to speak to the fact that some Christians don’t think they have what it takes to be an evangelist or a disciple. They might think that is just for “holy” people or I will work on that when I get older. Well, the time to get holy is now! But the problem is a problem of scarcity, the problem of “never enough”: we don’t think we are smart enough, not good enough, not perfect enough, not successful enough, not extraordinary enough. Here is a newsflash, it doesn’t matter what you think, it matters what Heaven thinks.

Your Heavenly Father sees you as beloved. He sees you as capable. He sees you as worthy. Why? Because, you are made in His image and likeness. He sees what you don’t always see. His sees his child whom he loves. But, you might say; “Joe, you don’t know what I’ve done.” You’re right, but I have probably done the same or worse in my 52 years. But I know who I am, I am a son of the Father, brother to the King and friend of the Holy Spirit. I am part of the family business. My Dad is king of the universe and I have access to all the treasure in Heaven and He wants me to come to work with Him.

You see, at your baptism you weren’t just forgiven of your sins in the waters of baptism, but you entered into a ministry and life of Power, this part of your inheritance. What we do and accomplish must flow out of being a son or daughter of God. It’s not what I do for God; it’s who I am before God. When we start to see the world this way we no longer see problems we see Heavenly solutions. Then we start to ask the questions; do I see my job, my family, my faith through the eyes of Heaven and through the eyes of abundance?

Jesus saw everything this way in the Gospels. Take the reading from last Sunday. Jesus didn’t see a shortage of bread, Jesus saw from Heavenly eyes an abundance of bread, twelve baskets left over. Or take today’s reading, Jesus didn’t see the rough sea as something to be feared, Jesus saw smooth walking and Peter experienced that until he took his eye off Jesus and listened to the world around. We are guilty of that. It’s hard to hear God talking to us when we fill our world with noise (both audible and visual). So, when we renew our minds as St. Paul reminds us in Romans 12:2 (which we will take up next week) we start to see and hear what Heaven thinks. We start to see a transformation in ourselves and we see the world in a different way; through Heavenly Eyes. So your task this week: find out “What Heaven Thinks!

Blessings Joe Bland

BULLETIN BITES

“Oh you of little faith, why do you doubt?” Today’s Gospel passage about Jesus approaching the apostles walking on the water in stormy weather follows immediately after last Sunday’s Gospel story about thousands of people eating their fill after Jesus takes bread, blesses it, and distributes it the people. After stepping out of the boat to go to Jesus Peter starts to sink. He pleads to Jesus who lifts him up after chastising him for his lack of faith. It is tempting to be critical of Peter for losing faith in Jesus. But Peter did get out of the boat and step onto the water in violation of all he had experienced during a lifetime of working on the water as a fisherman. That took a great act of faith. But a single act of faith in Jesus is not sufficient for a true disciple. We must constantly renew and demonstrate our faith in Jesus as the Incarnate Word of God and our faith in ourselves as children of God made in his image. As disciples we are stewards of that faith, responsible for making it grow and mature.

19th Sunday of Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

Sunday Connection Today’s Gospel directly follows last week’s account of Jesus feeding a crowd of more than 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish. For the sake of the crowds, Jesus had postponed his time of solitude. Now, at last, Jesus finds some time for quiet and prayer. He sends his disciples ahead of him by boat, dismisses the crowds, and then withdraws to the mountain to pray.

The disciples do not fare well. They struggle to weather the wind and waves, making little progress in their journey. We are reminded of a previous story in Chapter 8 of Matthew’s Gospel, when Jesus calms the seas. This time, however, Jesus does not calm the seas, and the disciples do not express fear until they see Jesus walking toward them on the water. In this story it is not the storm that is feared but the sight of Jesus before them, whom they mistake for a ghost.

Clues like these suggest that this story is about the disciples’ growing understanding of the identity of Jesus. In continuity with last week’s Gospel about the feeding of the multitude, today’s Gospel is also about what the disciples’ faith in Jesus will enable them to do. In last week’s Gospel, when the disciples see the crowds, they ask Jesus to send the crowds away. Jesus turns the situation around, telling the disciples to feed the crowd with the provisions that they have. Both of these Gospels tell us much about ministry.

Jesus calls to the disciples and calms their fears. He is not a ghost. The impulsive Peter seeks proof that the person is indeed Jesus. He asks Jesus to call him out onto the water, and Jesus grants this request. Peter’s fear and doubt overtake him, however, once he is walking on the water. Jesus reaches out to Peter and saves him. When Jesus and Peter enter the boat, Matthew reports that the wind ceases, and the disciples confess that Jesus is the Son of God.

Faith in Jesus will enable the disciples to do the work that Jesus has done. Peter walks on water. The five loaves and two fish feed a multitude of people. The disciples can and will participate in the work of the kingdom of heaven. When Peter fears and doubts the person of Jesus, however, he falters. Peter’s example teaches us that true Christian ministry emerges from the faith that Jesus is the Messiah, God’s only Son.
