101 Questions about the Catholic Mass (continued)

85) Are heavenly persons present at Mass? Jesus is present in the Mass in various and special ways. The Three Persons of God – the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit – are present and active in bestowing grace as we address them in the prayers of the Mass. There are also other heavenly persons present at Mass – those of the Communion of saints and the Angels. The Blessed Virgin Mary is present interceding for the Church, and countless thousands of Angels praising God, together with your Guardian Angels who is interceding for you. At every Mass, the Church is also filled with many Saints of Heaven, both known and unknown, who come to glorify God with the Church on earth. 86) How should I approach the Eucharist to receive Communion? It is important to approach the Lord in Communion with reverence, hands folded in prayer from coming and going from receiving Communion. We should be speaking to Him love and thankfulness, being conscious of Him while receiving Him. We should avoid distractions, which would take our minds away from the solemnity and awesomeness of what we are doing. 87) Do I make any sign of reverence as I receive the Lord? Yes. St. Augustine discusses how we should conduct ourselves, saying: “It was in His flesh that Christ walked among us and it is His flesh that He has given us to eat for our salvation. No one, however, eats of this flesh without having first adored it… and not only do we not sin in thus doing it, but we would sin if we did not do so.” The Church asks us to make some external sign of adoration before receiving Christ in the Eucharist, and in the United States, the recommended sign is a bow of the head just before receiving. 88) What is the proper way to receive the Host? When receiving Holy Eucharist, as the minister says, “The Body of Christ,” we respond, “Amen,” which means, “I believe.” We may receive the Eucharist on the tongue, or in the hand. When receiving in the hand, one hand could be cupped over the other. 89) Why is the Eucharist sometimes distributed with the Hosts and the consecrated wine, and other times with the Hosts only? Christ is fully present in both the host and in the chalice. Both species must be present for a valid Mass, and the priest must consume both. However, it is not required for anyone other than the priest to receive Communion under both kinds, even if both are offered. We may choose to receive the Precious Blood. In that case, we make an act of reverence for receiving the Body. 90) Is there another way to receive the Eucharist? Though not very common in the Unites States, Holy Communion may be offered by intinction, whereby the minister dips the Host into the chalice before giving It to you on the tongue, saying “The Body and Blood of Christ,” In either case, you respond with an “Amen” as you receive the dipped Host, after an external act of reverence.

Its getting to be that time of year!!! Don’t forget our Parish Fireworks Booth!!!

For more than 45 years the Parish Fireworks booth has raised funds to support Parish Youth Programs. The booth is located in Corti Bros parking lot and operates from June 29th to July 4th annually. This year, the Fireworks team will be pre-selling vouchers after Masses in the month of June. The St. Mary Parish Fireworks booth needs your help! It's a chance to complete some of your parish hours before school even starts!!

We are looking for the following: Marketing/Social Media - help us get the word out to parishioners and school parents to remind them to go to our booth and support the Parish youth. We are primarily in need of one or two people to manage this entire process, working with the New Media team at the Parish. The TNT organization provides us with e-flyers, videos and other support, so you don't have to reinvent the wheel, just get the word out. Please contact Mary Willett at 916-715-0122 with questions or to volunteer. Voucher Pre-Sale Management - help us organize and sell $10 vouchers that can be redeemed at the booth. There will be a classroom competition for the school in May, and sales after Masses in late, May, June and the first week of July. Also the potential for sales at St. Mary Summer School. Please contact Mia Odell at 916-607-0939 with questions or to volunteer. Transportation - every morning, that the booth is in operation, we will need to pick up our product (warehouse is located near corner of Power Inn Rd. & Fruitridge Blvd) and deliver it to the booth. We usually have a small trailor to load up but are in need of folks with hitches to help with transportation. Every evening we will need to return all product to our storage unit at the warehouse. You will have help with packing up the prod-uct and inventory. Please contact Kirk Stinson at 916-290-2639 with questions or to volunteer. Work the Booth and Sell, Sell, Sell - two hour shifts will be available every day, training will be provided. This is a fun environment to volunteer, children under 18 are not allowed in the booth per CA State Law but kids can be outside with balloons, flags and noise makers getting the attention of passerby’s. Volunteer as a family and receive Parish hours for the adults and Community Service for the kids. Please contact David Malarkey at 916-524-2253 with questions or to volunteer.

Parish Pot Luck In a couple weeks Saint Mary's Parish will be in the season of "Goodbye and Hello"- saying farewell to Father Jossy and welcome to Father Sijo. To mark this very special occasion in the life of our parish a potluck luncheon will be served at Giovanni Hall on Sunday June 25, 2017 after 11:00 Mass. Please come and join us by bringing your favorite dish. To ensure that there is enough food and variety for everyone, the Potluck committee is encouraging parishioners whose last names start with the letters A-H to bring the main dish, letters I-Q a side dish, and letters R-Z a dessert. For further information please contact Ms. Mary Kassis at telephone 383-5224 or Ms. Milka Bilandzich at telephone 454-5391.

Bible Study Take some time this summer to grow in faith! The Bible Study group is hosting a summer book club, centered around Brant Pitre's book: Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. It is available on Amazon, or can be ordered from a Catholic Book Store. This book shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth

knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”? We will meet on three separate Wednesdays over the summer to discuss the study guide questions at the back of the book:

June 28 - Introduction through Chapter 3 July 19 - Chapters 4 - 5 Aug 2 - Chapters 6 - 8

Even if you can't make all three sessions, you are welcome to participate. We meet in the Cabrini Center, School library, 7-8:30pm for prayer, discussion and fellowship. Come Join us! Contact Gwen Devereux for more information or to RSVP [email protected]

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED EF Homestay Programs, has a great opportunity for you to host a student from Spain, France, Italy Germany, Russia or Taiwan, this summer, for 3 to 4 weeks. Become a volunteer host family and share our American culture and lifestyle with an exchange student, while they share their culture with you. Our students will arrive on July 7th and depart on August 2nd. They are here to study English language and American culture, and participate in daily classes, activities and field trips, Monday thru Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, with EF Program Staff. As a host family, we ask you to provide a loving environment, a bed, meals and transportation to a nearby designated bus stop, where a school bus will transport them to their class and activities, each day. The students are fully insured and have their own spending money. Host family teens can earn up to 45 community service hours for hosting. Our host families, who open their homes and hearts for these few weeks in the summer, are a vital aspect of this program and truly a blessing to these students. Imagine the impact you will have on a young life. Please call now for more information: Karen Wood at 352-239-0578 or Stephen Koch at 408-933-8985. Thank you.

Youth on a Mission: Do you know a teen in your parish that has what it takes to be a great leader? Challenge them to take their Catholic Faith to the next level with Youth On A Mission. Our 4 day program offers discipleship training – meaningful prayer experiences, inspiring talks, practical skills, and an opportunity to connect with on fire Catholic youth from all over Northern California. We want youth to have a profound encounter with Jesus and equip them with the skills to share that experience as a leader in your parish. This is the youth training you’ve been waiting for. Chal-lenge your future leaders with Youth on A Mission this summer July 20-23, 2017 at Cal Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA. Registration information available online at www.norcalcatholicyouth.com.

Thank you for your Prayer Requests The Prayer Request Group meets weekly and prays individually for every request we receive. Just place your written request in a Prayer Request box in the vestibule. We would also love to hear about how God is helping you, and you are always welcome to join us any Monday at 6:30pm in the church.

Thank you to those who have already made a gift to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. Your gift is Mercy in Motion and will make a difference in someone’s life. As of May 25, 2017, 233 parishioners have participated in the 2017 Appeal at our parish, totaling $35,161 in gifts and pledges. If you have not yet made a donation, it’s not too late! Prayerfully consider a gift. No contribution, no act of charity is ever too small or insignificant. Envelopes are still available in the church or in the parish office. Don’t forget… 25% of what you give is returned to our parish. This year, Appeal funds will be used as follows: 50% will be given to our St. Vincent de Paul Chapter and 50% will be given to St. Mary School for tuition assistance.

HEARTFELT THANKS The Mercy Guild would like to thank the parishioners of St. Mary Parish for their tremendous generosity and support for our Mercy Guild Raffle which supports scholarships and equipment purchases at Mercy General Hospital.

Sponsors Needed We are in the process of finishing up the new 2017 Parish Ministry Directory and will be sending it to the printer soon. The cost of printing 2,000 copies will be approxi-mately $1,500. Our friends at Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger have already agreed to help with a portion of the cost. If you are interested in helping with the remainder by sponsoring a portion of the printing costs, please contact the rectory at 916-452-0296. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
