PHONE CALLS: Reports have been made of an unknown individual phoning area residents claiming that Msgr. Scheaffer is requesting funds for the poor and needy. This is a scam. Msgr. Scheaffer is

not soliciting funds directly from anyone. Msgr. Scheaffer does not want anyone to respond to

any such phone calls.

WITNESS MATTERS: In the Early Church before writing of the Gospels, Christians told the story of Jesus. They described their own personal encounters with him as the risen Lord. At Aug. 24/25th and Sept. 7/8th Liturgies, members

of St. Mary’s Parish family will share their personal faith sharing experiences. Sharing our stories deepens our relationship with Jesus and each other while bringing us together as a Parish family. After liturgy, find facilitators and small group team members in the gathering area to talk with and answer any of your questions. Please join us.

PIEROGIE HELP: Since 1995 a dedicated group of people has made over 30,000 pierogies and other delicious foods for St Mary’s Holiday Bazaar. Our group of kitchen help has continued to turnover and we need some new helpers this year. Could you spend a couple of hours with us? We make *pierogies Mondays after Labor Day. It takes about 6 hours, and involves about 12 different jobs; half of them are sit-down jobs. *Make Soup and BBQ Mondays in October; *Make Haluski the Bazaar week. With fresh faces like YOURS will we continue to be able to make these sought-after, homemade Bazaar foods

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION: In today’s Gospel the question asked Jesus is: who will be saved and how many will be saved? Christ reversed the question and asked: will you be saved? He warns the gate is narrow so it is not easy. Here we have to be humble and realize God has called us but we must realize how unworthy we are and how dependent we are on the Holy Spirit to help us follow Christ. To cry out, ‘Lord, Lord’ will not save us. To eat and drink his Body and Blood in Eucharist unworthily in the state of serious sin will not save us. In different parts of scripture the Lord sets some criteria e.g. the charity of the Good Samaritan in Luke; the works of Mercy in Matthew; the options for the poor repeated often in scripture. These are the narrow gate through which we are saved.

f we ask people who are doing what they really love to do, “How did you get to where you are?” we find that

many of them started by asking themselves some basic questions: 1. What would I really like to do? 2. What am I good at doing or learning? 3. What opportunity is life offering me, right now, for doing what makes me come joyfully alive? Thus they started with themselves, with their own gifts and preferences.—Vision Vocation Guide 2015

WORD of LIFE: “Within the ‘people of life and the people for life’, the family has a decisive responsibility. This responsibility flows from its very nature as a community of life and love, founded upon marriage, and from its mission to ‘guard, reveal and communicate love’ (The Gospel of Life, no. 92). ~ Citing John Paul II, Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio (22 November 1981), 17: AAS 74 (1982), 100. REFLECTION… by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson “Monopoly” the board game was created first by one

Elizabeth Magie and later by Charles Darren way back in

1935. Most people are aware that the goal is to drive

one’s opponent into bankruptcy. All told, “Monopoly”

has become part of international pop culture, having been

licensed in 103 countries and in more than 37 languages!

So much for the game.

As for the concept “monopoly,” it is firstly defined as

“the exclusive control of a commodity or service in a

particular market that makes the manipulation of prices

possible.” There’s much evil in most manipulation.

Simply put, monopoly is “the exclusive possession or

control of something.” So monopoly is a negative.

Exclusivity nearly always is.

Turning to this weekend’s Scriptural excerpts, we learn

once again how Israel was God’s chosen people. That can

never change. Yet we also learn that God’s choice was

never meant to be exclusive. With the coming of Israel’s

true Messiah, Our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, that

truth was revealed in all its fullness. He clearly taught that

the invitation to live in the kingdom of God goes to

everyone who recognizes Him as “the Way, the Truth and

the Life.” Even those who through no fault of their own

never heard the invitation but lived a good life according

to their consciences. Israel had to learn that nobody is

excluded from God’s love because of ethnicity or religion.

Their great prophet Isaiah taught this as God’s prophet

centuries before Jesus’ coming, as we read today in the

Scriptures.

A good and practical follow-up to this truth is a question

we can pose to ourselves regarding our own hearts. After

all, we are not exempt from self-examination on this point.

Are we, are you, as magnanimous as God? Or are certain

people excluded from your list of God’s loved ones? Are

they barred from enjoying your Christian love? And, is

your decision, however undeclared to the external world,

final? If that is so, you need a real conversion. It’s urgent,

of course, for no greater reason than your appointment

and mine with our divine Judge draws closer each day.

That’s not a threat but a promise. Great wisdom abounds

in one’s decision to see things God’s way.

Mohandas K. Gandhi was the leader of the Indian

nationalist movement against British rule and considered

the father of his country. He is internationally esteemed

for his doctrine of nonviolence to achieve political and

social progress.

Gandhi says in his autobiography that in his student days

he was truly interested in the Bible. Deeply touched by

reading the Gospels, he seriously considered becoming a

convert, since Christianity seemed to offer the real solution

to the caste system that was dividing the people of India.

One Sunday, he went to a nearby church to attend

services. He decided to see the minister and ask for

instruction in the way of salvation and enlightenment on

other doctrines. But when he entered the church, the

ushers refused to give him a seat and suggested that he go

and worship with his own people. Gandhi left and never

came back. “If Christians have caste systems also,” he said

to himself, “I might as well remain a Hindu.”
