The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God: January 1, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. It is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace. Let’s honor Mary by praying for peace in the world

as we start the new year. There will be a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s, Bloomington and a 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Charles, Cassville on January 1, 2018.

New Year’s Prayer: God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to

forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and

our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put

aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

Year End Giving: As we celebrate the joy of the Christmas season and prepare for 2018, please know that your financial support is deeply appreciated and needed for the operation of our parishes and Catholic schools. God bless!

Fr. John’s Notes: Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The feast of the Holy Family was introduced into the liturgical calendar in 1921, promoted as a way to honor the Christian family. So today not only do we honor the Holy Family, we also focus on

our own families and consider how we can be like the Holy Family. The way Mary and Joseph raised and cared for Jesus, and the way that Jesus, Mary and Joseph love and care for each other can be a model for our own families.

Christmas Thank You’s: I would like to thank Fr. Bill Seipp for helping with our Christmas Masses. His assistance is deeply appreciated and we are blessed with his service to our parishes.

Thank you to everyone who has very generously supported our parishes throughout the year and at Christmas-time. May God’s love and blessings be with you and your fam-ily in 2018!

REMEMBRANCE: As we say farewell to 2017, it is a good time to remember the people who were baptized, married and who died this past year from our parishes.

Reflection “…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must for-give.” - COLOSSIANS 3:13 Forgiveness – one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone - maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co- worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

St. Charles School News We hope everyone had a safe and healthy Christmas. It is a great time to reflect

on what really matters. Even though Christmas is on December 25, the spirit of giving, sharing and singing should be carried on all year long. May each and every one of you and your family have a joyous New Year holiday. Scrip: Winter Shopping! Don't forget to purchase SCRIP to help the school. To get your SCRIP cards call Lacy @ 725-5297 or you may stop at the following places: St. Charles School: Walmart & BP; Village Office: Walmart & BP, Royal Bank, Isaac Okey: BP

Thank You to Our Bulletin Advertisers: The cost of printing the bulletins is defrayed through the local business and individuals who advertise in our bulletin. Please thank these generous sponsors and mention that you saw their ad in our bulletin. It is always good to let them know that their advertising works. Please contact a parish office if you would like to advertise in the bulletin. The cost is approximately $6.00 per week for a small ad.

Feast of the Holy Family December 31, 2017

Celebrate Life

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Though he was conceived of a virgin, Jesus nevertheless lived as a son in a human family -- a family which points the way

for the rest of us. The family is the sanctuary of life. There can be no life without family, and there can be no family without life. The family, above all, is where life is to be welcomed, no matter how fragile or inconvenient it may be. One of the many reasons why the Pope and bishops identify abortion and euthanasia as pre-eminent issues is because these crimes are committed by one family member upon another. May the Holy Family lead us to a Culture of Life!

Help is Available If you need support for an unplanned pregnancy, please contact the Clarity Clinic of SW Wisconsin at 185 E. Pine St. Platteville, WI 53818, 608-348-5787 or email at [email protected] or the Women’s Care Center in Madison, WI at 608-241-8100. For more information on pro-life issues, visit www.WisconsinRightToLife.org or www.feministsforlife. For abortion recovery help, please visit SilentNoMoreAwareness.org or ww.rachelsvineyard.org.

Help Us Prepare Engaged Couples for Marriage! The Diocese of Madison invites you to share your

marriage and your faith with newly engaged couples through our Marriage Prep Program. It is an opportunity to share your real life experiences and the beauty of God’s plan for married love with couples preparing for marriage. We need couples that have experienced the trials, struggles, and joys of marital love and are striving to live their Catholic faith within their marriage. Visit madisondiocese.org/jointhempteam for more information OR Contact Beth Ulaszek at (608) 821-3026 or [email protected] for more information. Join us for a training session Friday, January 19 from 6:30-9:00pm at Holy Name Heights in Madison.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS: “Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s

Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

BEARERS OF THE WORD The Church has placed a number of notable feast days immediately after Christmas. The feasts of Stephen, John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents form a summary of the life lived in Christ, the Word made flesh. What do these have to do with the feast of the Holy Family, which crowns the Octave of Christmas? These feasts remind us that suffering will occur in fulfilling the mission of Christ, and that we are all called to be bearers of this Word whose birth we celebrate. We also see this manifested in the lives of Joseph and Mary, both of whom took social and religious risks in obedi-ence to the will of God, and both of whom were open to the word of God sent to them from on high. In these ways they prefigured the life of Jesus himself. Most likely, a few of us found ourselves at Mass this past Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, but the essence of these feasts and the essence of the holiness of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus remain central, a holiness we celebrate today.
