Baptism We joyfully welcome to God’s holy family Everly Lynn

Cauffman, daughter of Holden Amanda Cauffman, who was baptized at St. Mary’s Church, Bloomington.

The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God January 1, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. This is the most ancient feast in which we honor Mary as the “Bearer of the Eternal Word.” It comes one week after Christmas, and is the Octave

(or eighth day) of Christmas. It is also the World Day of Pray-er for Peace. Let’s honor Mary by praying for peace in the world as we start the new year. Please join us on this Holy Day of Obligation on Dec. 31, at 4:30 p.m. at St. Charles Church and 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s, Glen Haven. On January 1, 2020 there will be an 8:00 a.m. Mass at St. John’s, Patch Grove and a 9:15 a.m. Mass at St. Mary’s, Bloomington.

Year End Giving As we celebrate the joy of the Christmas season and prepare for 2020, please know that your fi-nancial support is deeply appreciat-ed and needed for the operation of our parishes and Catholic schools.

Fr. John’s Notes Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph On the Sunday after Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ human family. Appropriate to the season, we usually visualize the Holy Family as they

appear in the typical nativity scene: the baby Jesus lying in the manger, surrounded by his doting parents. But Joseph, Mary, and Jesus lived together for many years, through Jesus’ infan-cy, childhood, adolescence, and maybe even into his adult-hood. As we celebrate the Holy Family, let us think of the fam-ilies that we have been part of, both as children and as adults.

Christmas Thank You’s I would like to thank Fr. Greg Ihm for helping with our Christmas Masses. I deeply appreciated that he was able to join us this year for Christmas. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make our churches beautiful inside

and out for Christmas. Thank you to all who gave donations for the flowers and decorations. We can be very proud of our beautiful churches. Thank you to everyone who has very generously supported our parishes throughout the year and at Christmas-time. May God’s love and blessings be with you and your family in 2020!

REMEMBRANCE As we say farewell to 2019, it is a good time to remember the people who were baptized, married and who died this past year from our parishes.

ST. MARY’S SCHOOL NEWS Our vision: Faith, Family and Academic Excellence We hope that the new year brings everyone in our parishes happiness and joy from the love of Christ. We want to thank all of the parish members for supporting the school this year.

We are looking for new families to join us at St. Mary's. We have a wonderful school with great teachers who model and live their faith with joy. Maybe you know someone who is interested in a different sort of "school spirit." The Spaghetti Supper on Feb. 1st is a great time to visit the school and enjoy the hospitality of our families. We are enrolling children for our 3K program for either a full day or half day option. Call the school to make an appoint to see why the children "love Miss Vickie." SCRIP: SCRIP gift cards are a great way to do your shopping and helps support St. Mary School at the same time. We carry cards for national retailers, local gas cards, Piggly Wiggly and Wal-Mart as well as most local venders. You can purchase SCRIP at St. Mary’s School or Economy Feed Mill and the SCRIP program is online.

2019 HARVEST FUND It’s the time of year when we thank God for the many blessings we have received from him. We are very

gratefully to the families who have given do-nations totaling $25,747.62 We hope all of our parish members will be able to share their bounty and blessings to help with winter expenses for the parish. We appreciate all contributions large or small and thank the many generous parishioners for their continued support.

St. Mary’s Spaghetti Supper Mark your calendars and plan to attend the annual

Spaghetti Supper at St. Mary’s School the evening of Saturday, February 1, 2020. There will also be classroom displays and a Silent Auction.

Thank You’s

We are deeply grateful to everyone for their very generous gifts to St. Mary’s teachers and staff. Thank you to individuals who have blessed our parishes with financial gifts during the Christmas season.

Pictorial Directory Reminder We are working on creating a directory for the four clustered parishes. We need everyone’s help and

photos to make this a reality. Pam Myhre and Annette Knapp have been taking candid photos of St. Mary’s families. If you already have a photo of your family that you would like to have included in the directory, you can attach it to an email to Annette Knapp at [email protected].

No Salt or Ice Melt on the New Sidewalks & Steps at St. Mary’s We have been advised not to use salt or ice melt on the newer concrete sidewalks or on the new church steps and rectory ramp since the concrete could be damaged by it. There are pails of grit by the church entrances. Please use this if the areas are icy.

New Year’s Prayer God, thank you for a new year. May every-one in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are

always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

Thank you for your support and generosity.

Reflection

“Wives, be subordinate to your husbands…Husbands, love your wives…Children, obey your parents in everything…Fathers, do not provoke your children…” (Colossians 3:18-21) Pope Francis said that families, through their life of prayer and love, become "schools of true human growth." Being credible witnesses of Christian love, especially that of family members, exerts the most positive influence on our children. We are all children of God, let us pray and love each other as God, Our Father, does for us.

St. Charles School News We will have an Education Commission meeting on January 6, at 5:30 p.m. in the school media

center for anyone interested in the direction that our school will go in 2020. We appreciate all of the love and support offered to our children from the parish over many years. Best wishes for a new year ahead! St. Charles' school admit students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and financial aid programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 29, 2019

Celebrate Life

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Though he was conceived of a virgin, Jesus

nevertheless lived as a son in a human family -- a family which points the way for the rest of us. The family is the sanctuary of life. There can be no life without family, and there can be no family without life. The family, above all, is where life is to be welcomed, no matter how fragile or inconvenient it may be. One of the many reasons why the Pope and bishops identify abortion and euthanasia as pre-eminent issues is be-cause these crimes are committed by one family member upon another. May the Holy Family lead us to a Culture of Life!

SAINT THOMAS BECKET (1118-1170) Feat December 29 To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and poli-tics to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordination liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing secular responsibilities, distributing his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irrational hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and justice for Christ’s sheep. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
