REGISTRATION FOR TOTUS TUUS AT ST. ANNE

Day Program, Grades 1-6, 9AM to 2:30 PM, July 23 through 27. Jr. High and High School, (grades 7 through 12), 7 to 9 PM, July 22 through 26. Registration Fees are $20.00 per child or $40.00 per family for the Day Pro-gram and $10.00 per child or $20.00 per family for the Evening Program. Totus Tuus is a Latin phrase that means “totally yours”, a motto given to us by Saint John Paul II describing his dedication to Jesus through Mary. During one week this summer, July 22 through 27, we will provide Catholic children entering grades one through twelve, a prayer filled envi-ronment that will help them become closer to Christ through His Mother, Mary. This program combines fun with faith filled experiences, including daily Mass. A creative and enthusiastic team of young adults from the Diocese of Peoria will help youth come to know and devote themselves to Mary, Our Mother. In 2018, Totus Tuus will focus on the Apostles Creed and the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. Want to know more? Go to www.stanne-em.org and click on Totus Tuus on the Home Page or under Ministries. Please email amy.rel.ed@gmail or call our office at 309-752-1878 with questions. We will be happy to answer them!

CELEBRATE LIFE

You are invited to an OPEN HOUSE, JUNE 3, 1-4:00 pm AT THE NEW LOCATION OF THE WOMENS CHOICE CEN-TER AT 2740 HAPPY JOE DRIVE IN BETTENDORF. The Center moved across the Street from their former facility after the Planned Parenthood Clinic closed. Sadly many un-born babies lives were ended through abortion while Planned Parenthood operated their clinic at this location. Through the power of prayer and work by many staff members and volun-teers of the WWC Center and many people in our Quad Cities community, a former place of death has become a place of LIFE. The director of the Center for the past 10 years, Vicki Tyler, will also be honored before she retires on June 15. The Center provides all of their services free of charge.

Saint of the Day

May 28

Venerable Pierre Toussaint

Born in modern-day Haiti and brought to New York

City as a slave, Pierre died a free man, a re-nowned hairdresser, and one of New York City’s most well-known Catholics. Planta-tion owner Pierre Bérard made Toussaint a house slave and allowed his grandmother to teach her grandson how to read and write. In his early 20s, Pierre, his younger sister, his aunt, and two other house slaves accom-panied their master’s son to New York City because of political unrest at home. Appren-ticed to a local hairdresser, Pierre learned the trade quickly and eventually worked very successfully in the homes of rich women in New York City. When his master died, Pierre was determined to support him-self, his master’s widow, and the other house slaves. He was freed shortly before the widow’s death in 1807. Four years later, he married Marie Rose Juliette, whose freedom he had purchased. They later adopted Euphémie, his orphaned niece. Both pre-ceded Pierre in death. He attended daily Mass at St. Peter’s Church on Barclay Street, the same parish that Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton had attended. Pierre donated to vari-ous charities, generously assisting blacks and whites in need. He and his wife opened their home to orphans and educated them. The couple also nursed abandoned people who were suffering from yellow fever. Urged to retire and enjoy the wealth he had accu-mulated, Pierre responded, “I have enough for myself, but if I stop working I have not enough for others.” Pierre originally was buried outside St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, where he was once refused entrance because of his race. His sanctity and the popular de-votion to him caused his body to be moved to the present location of St. Patrick’s Ca-thedral on Fifth Avenue. Pierre Toussaint was declared Venerable in 1996.
