Pastor's Notes After the Pastoral Council meeting, and after several consultations I have made, we have made the decision that during the month of October the Mass on Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. It will be alternated, one Saturday in Spanish and the other in English. We have made the decision due to the number of Latino people attending this mass. It will depend on the answer we have if we

stay that way, or return to Mass only in English.

Each October the Church in the United States cele-brates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sun-day. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. This Month’s Liturgy at a Glance The gospels readings in October insist over and over again on the need to nourish a true faith; that is, a faith that allows the person to know him or herself in all limitations and strengths, and to recognize the reality around in order to act in a responsible way. The readings of the Gospel of Luke continue, with wonderful narra-tions of healings and the parables of mercy. There are not many liturgical festivities, but we commemorate a good number of saints, martyrs, witnesses and models, such as Saint Thérése of the Child Jesus, Saint Francis Borgia, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Anthony Mary Claret, and the Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddeus. The feast of the Holy Guardian Angels is also cele-brated. In addition, October is the second Mari-an month in the year, because of the important role of the Holy Rosary in Popular religiosity. For Hispanics, October is full of meaning of col-lective identity forged in the course of centuries. While it is true that there is a diversity of His-panic peoples, it is also true that there are com-mon elements of language, values, and customs, which allow us to speak of a culture. The event of Columbus’ arrival in the nevertheless, we cannot ignore the impact of evangelization or the fact that millions of people today profess the same faith; without a doubt, these are elements of a collective identity.

Un Vistazo a la Liturgia de este Mes Las lecturas de los evangelios en octubre insis-ten una y otra vez en la necesidad de nutrir una fe verdadera; es decir, una fe que le permite a la persona conocerse a sí misma en todas las limi-taciones y fortalezas, y reconocer la realidad a su alrededor para actuar de manera responsable. Las lecturas del Evangelio de Lucas continúan, con maravillosas narraciones de curaciones y las parábolas de la misericordia. No hay muchas festividades litúrgicas, pero con-memoramos un buen número de santos, márti-res, testigos y modelos, como Santa Teresa del Niño Jesús, San Francisco Borgia, San Francisco de Asís, San Antonio María Claret y los Apósto-les Simón y Judas Tadeo. La fiesta de los Santos Ángeles Guardianes también se celebra. Ade-más, octubre es el segundo mes mariano del año, debido al importante papel del Santo Rosa-rio en la religiosidad popular. Para los hispanos, octubre está lleno de signifi-cado de identidad colectiva forjada en el trans-curso de los siglos. Si bien es cierto que existe una diversidad de pueblos hispanos, también es cierto que hay elementos comunes de lenguaje, valores y costumbres que nos permiten hablar de una cultura.
