2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Here I Am, Lord! While there are many ways to give to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, there is a particularly beneficial op-portunity if you are 70 ½ or over have an IRA. If you are in this category, the IRS requires you to take a required minimum distribution from your Ira each year. As a result, this distribution is added to your taxable income and increases the amount of taxes owed to the government. However, instead of taking your required minimum distribution, you can in-struct your IRA investment manager to donate this distribution to charity such as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this automatically omits this amount from your adjusted gross income. This tax benefit can be realized by all qualifying individuals, whether you take the standard deduction or itemize your de-ductions. This can be a significant benefit to you and a great way to support the work of the Bishop’s An-nual Appeal. St. Mary’s people to express their gratitude for Msgr. John J. Demkovich During the next several weeks, the people of our parish will have a special opportunity to honor the memory of Msgr. John J. Demkovich who served us as our pastor for 40 years (1971-2011). With the approval of our parish council, a second collection will be taken at all the Sunday masses on the week-end of the 13th and 14th of October to fund the purchase in his memory of the new Roman missal from which we will use for the celebration of the Masses in English. Ya que existen varias formas de contribuir a la Campaña Anual del Obispo, hay una oportunidad especialmente beneficiosa si tiene más de 70 años de edad y tiene un IRA (cuenta de retiro). Si usted califica bajo esta catego-ría, el IRS exige que usted retire un monto mínimo para su fondo de retiro cada año. The Nativity of the Virgin Mary

The joy brought by the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is celebrated under the denomination of feast every year, on September 8th. It commemorates the birth of the woman who would later become the Mother of God and Mother of the Church. Her birth anticipated and prepared the work of redemption man by her son, our Lord Jesus Christ. The significance of the Nativity of Mary relies upon her virginal body that serves, with the help of the Holy Spirit, as a tabernacle and altar of God. Mary is conceived without sin, in her mother’s womb, and she grew in holiness in the home of her parents, Joachim and Anne. God ensured that the woman who would be the Mother of the Savior would be born and raised under the care of a holy couple. It is important to take in account that the liturgy, in general, celebrates saints that day of their death or dies natalis (the day of their heavenly birth). The Church only celebrates the earthly birth of three people: Jesus, John the Baptist, and Virgin Mary. This feast has its roots in the East and its first source is the Protoevangelium of James, apocryphal to the 2nd century, where one may find details about the birth and infancy of Virgin Mary. The celebration itself originated in 5th century Jerusalem, in honor of the temple dedicated onto the grounds where the Virgin was presumably born; near the Temple of Jerusalem, close to the Pool of Bethesda where Jesus cured a paralytic (Jn 5:1-16). In the West, the feast was introduced in the 7th century, when Pope Sergius I ordered to celebrate a solemn procession, from the Church of Saint Adrian to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, in honor of a feast that was already celebrated on September 8th. It was Pope Gregorius XI who, in 1378, officially introduced this feast in the liturgical calendar. The reason why September 8th was designated as the Nativity of the Mother of Jesus cannot be determined. It was probably due to the beginning of the Byzantine liturgical calendar. By placing the Nativity of Virgin Mary upon this day, the feast acquires the symbolism of the beginning of the Redemptive Work thanks to Mary. The sense of the feast of the Nativity of Mary expresses two very important concepts: the fullness of tie (Gal 4:4; Eph 1:10) and the beneficial relief brought by birth of Mary. The fullness is brought because Mary came to collaborate with He who would bring definitive victory of eternal life, and relief because Mary illuminates the entire Church, for it was from her that the Sun of Justice was born, her son Jesus, Light that was expected for a long time by people of Israel.

La Natividad de la Virgen María

La alegría por la Natividad de la Virgen María la celebramos con la categoría de fiesta cada año, el 8 de septiembre. En ella recordaremos el nacimiento de la mujer que habría ser la Madre de Dios y Madre de toda la Iglesia. Con su nacimiento se anticipó y preparó la obra de la redención del hombre llevada a cabo por su hijo, Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Lo signifi-cativo de la Natividad de María radica en que, con el auxilio del Espíritu Santo, su cuerpo virginal habría de servir más tarde como tabernáculo y altar de Dios. María es concebida sin pecado, en el vientre de su madre, y creció en santidad en el hogar de sus padres, Joaquín y Ana. Dios cuido que la mujer que sería la Madre del Redentor naciera y creciera bajo bajo el cuidado de una pareja santa. Es importante tener en cuenta que la liturgia, en general, celebra a los santos ese día de su muerte o dies natalis (el día de su nacimiento en el cielo). La Iglesia solo celebra el nacimiento terrenal de tres personas: Jesús, Juan el Bautista y la Virgen María. Esta fiesta surge en oriente y su primera fuente es el Protoenvagelio de San-tiago, apócrifo del siglo II, en el cual se narran detalles sobres el nacimiento y la infancia de la Virgen María. La celebración como tal surgió en el siglo V en Jerusalén, con ocasión de la dedicación del templo construido sobre el presunto lugar del nacimiento de la Virgen; cerca del Templo de Jerusalén, y de la piscina de Bethesda, donde Jesús curó a un paralítico (Jn 5, 1-16). En Occidente, la fiesta se comenzó a introducir en el siglo VII, cuando el Papa Ser-gio I ordenó celebrar una solemne procesión, desde la Iglesia de San Adrián a la basílica de Santa María la Mayor, en honor a una fiesta que ya se conmemoraba el 8 de septiembre. El Papa Gregorio XI quien, en 1378, presentó oficialmente esta fiesta en el calendario litúrgico. La razón por la cual el 8 de septiembre fue designado como la Natividad de la Madre de Je-sús no se puede determinar. Probablemente se debió al comienzo del calendario litúrgico bizantino. Al colocar la Natividad de la Virgen María en este día, la fiesta adquiere el simbo-lismo del comienzo de la Obra Redentora gracias a María. El sentido de la fiesta de la Nati-vidad de María expresa dos conceptos muy importantes: la plenitud del vínculo (Gálatas 4: 4; Ef 1:10) y el alivio beneficioso que trae el nacimiento de María. La plenitud es traída por-que María vino a colaborar con Aquel que traería la victoria definitiva de la vida eterna, y alivio porque María ilumina a toda la Iglesia, porque de ella nació el Sol de Justicia, su hijo Jesús, Luz que se esperaba durante mucho tiempo por el pueblo de Israel.
