St Mary’s Church Cloughton
and
St Hilda’s Church Ravenscar
Welcome!
Thank you for showing interest in this post and the
parishes of Cloughton and Ravenscar who are seeking a
House for Duty Priest as their Priest in Charge.
As you will discover in this profile, the parishes are
found by the sea in beautiful countryside, and have
faith-filled church members who are embracing change
as they look to the future.
House for Duty, Priest in Charge Designate
As you will have noticed, this post is described as ‘Priest in Charge, Designate’ as the full Pastoral
Scheme necessary to create the post has not been completed. The last 12 months has seen the
parishes pro-actively adopting change and new approaches. St Mary’s in Cloughton have emerging
plans to re-develop the church interior so that it becomes a hub for greater congregational and
community use. St Hilda’s at Ravenscar nearly closed recently but local people reacted very
positively and have started attending the church, with a regular congregation of 15 at their
monthly Service. Both parishes have contributed to a review of ministry provision which led to the
creation of a new benefice of Cloughton & Ravenscar, from two larger existing benefices; currently
they are in separate benefices. These wider changes have the support of all six PCCs that are
affected and it has been decided to start advertising this post now; although it is likely to mean the
post holder will be licensed as an Assistant Curate to the Incumbents of those benefices until all of
the formal changes have occurred. The new Minister will play a significant part in shaping the next
stage of the life of these two parishes.
The North Scarborough Group Ministry
In 2013, a re-organisation of parishes in north Scarborough led to the creation of the Group
Ministry. It brought together two newly created benefices with the assumption that genuine
collaboration would occur. This vision and the sharing of resources and insights is now well-
established and is the best example of a Group Ministry I have ever come across.
The new Priest in Charge for these parishes will be joining a Group where shared ministry is a
norm and it is hoped that Cloughton and Ravenscar’s new Minister will be committed to these
ongoing and deepening relationships.
I trust the Profile will give you a good picture of the parishes but if you have any questions at all or
would like to discuss any issues relating to it, please do ring me on 01482 881659 or e-mail me at
Ven. Andy Broom Archdeacon of the East Riding

St Mary’s, Cloughton
We are a traditional village church with a welcoming congregation situated in the village of
Cloughton and serving the adjacent village of Burniston, both situated to the north of Scarborough
on the road to Whitby.
Our vision
A church renewed and confident in our faith – restored and envisioned for the future;
To be a growing church with a clear vision of church resources and our place in the
community.
Our challenges
To maintain and develop our ministry;
To develop our work with children and young families;
Engage more with our local community;
Continue to welcome all who come to worship.
The church and its ministry
St Mary’s is Victorian, Grade 2 listed building that sits
in a prominent position in the village. It is open to the
community throughout the week for fellowship and
prayer. There is currently a reader, a curate and a part-
time Family and Youth worker (the latter two are
shared with St Mark’s Church), and as members of the
North Scarborough Group Ministry (NSGM) we have
access to clergy from other churches within the Group
when needed.
It is an exciting time to be joining St Mary’s. We are
presently considering options that would involve significant changes to the interior of the church
to encourage wider community use and involvement in our work. An open meeting for the
community was held in September 2019 to consider the options. There was a very positive
response from those attending and a further meeting is planned to discuss future action.
We have a weekly Sunday service at 9.30 followed by refreshments in the Church Community Hall a short walk away. Services are varied offering a mixture of traditional and modern. In months with a fifth Sunday we hold a Group service in one of the churches in the North Scarborough Group. Our attendance is on average 35 adults and there
are 51 on the electoral roll. We have families who join us for All Age services and engaging with children and young families is a key priority. Four families are currently actively involved and we hope that others on the fringes will also become more active. We have a Sunday Club@4 which is aimed at Secondary School children through a combination table tennis, pool, craft and a Bible slot. Our Youth Worker also arranges after school hot chocolate sessions. We run Tuesday Tots sessions in the Church Community Hall. We also organise a monthly Men’s Breakfast and Coffee Morning along with a number of social events throughout the year. St Mary’s has good links with Lindhead school, the local primary school in Burniston. The family and youth worker leads assemblies there once a month and when invited helps with aspects of the RE curriculum. The church also has a good relationship with the pre-school playgroup in Cloughton and the family and youth worker leads Christmas and Easter celebrations in church for the playgroup and Tuesday Tots together. The family and youth worker also volunteers with the Brownies in Cloughton helping us to develop links with the wider community. There is a mobile Post Office in the church twice a week. This is just a flavour of who we are and what we do. For more information please visit our website: www.stmaryscloughton.churchsite.org.uk
St Hilda’s Ravenscar
The Church of St Hilda’s Ravenscar is the Parish Church
and is five miles from Cloughton. It is in the National Park,
situated where the moors meet the sea. From the road in
Ravenscar there is a wonderful view of Robin Hoods Bay,
it is so beautiful and tranquil. It is a farming community
and very much a rural area, with many Country pursuits.
Ravenscar has a Village Hall, where events take place. One
of these is the annual village show, which brings together
the communities of Ravenscar and the neighbouring
village of Staintondale which is also part of the parish. As well as the village hall Ravenscar has a
cricket team, who celebrate their centenary this year. Ravenscar has a large hotel and is a popular
destination with tourists, as there are many beautiful walks.
Our vision
Our vision is to help restore links with the Community
Our challenges
Someone to lead us into growth and mission and deepen faith.
The Church
The Church of St. Hilda is a well-kept Church which
was re-ordered in 2005 with the help of a very
generous bequest.
As well as the Church there is a gallery which is used
for exhibitions, a craft group who meet every
Thursday and the mobile post office uses the gallery
every Thursday morning. It has a good kitchen, toilet
facilities and an upstairs area which can be used for
meetings or as an office.
There is a full PCC, with 2 Church Wardens, and our
accounts are in order. We have one evening Service a month at 6pm and have 18 people on the
electoral roll. There is an open Churchyard
Staintondale
The Church of St John the Baptist Staintondale
is the daughter Church to St Hilda’s and is a
Chapel of Ease. It is 3 miles from Cloughton on
the road to Ravenscar. It is also in the middle of
a farming community. St John’s is looked after
by the ‘Friends of St John’s’, who raise funds to
keep the Church maintained. Although there
are no regular services, it is a popular church
for weddings and funerals and there are other
occasional services. There is an open
Churchyard.
Staintondale also has a village hall, where there is a mobile Post Office every Tuesday afternoon.
North Scarborough Group Ministry
Our vision for the group is to serve the communities of North Scarborough by:
Supporting and encouraging one another in ministry and mission
Enabling the Church to flourish proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The North Scarborough Group Ministry (NSGM) was formed in 2013 to build and sustain ministry
across a diverse group of 6 parishes, 8 churches situated at the north of Scarborough Deanery.
All through the process of discernment it was clear that a Group Ministry was essential to enable
the on-going ministry and mission of the parishes, today we also see it as a creative partnership
that supports leadership within the NSGM and helps us to develop in new ways of working
together.
The Clergy Team consists of two stipendiary priests, a curate, retired clergy and the House for Duty
Priest. The Group are blessed with a good team of Readers and many other enthusiastic, willing
and active members of Laity.
The House for Duty appointment would be part of the NSGM Steering Group which plays an
important role in overseeing the ministry and unity of the Group.
Thank You for reading our profile, we are very prayerful as we seek our new Minister and
trust that if this is you, you will have a growing sense of God’s call upon you as you reflect
on all that you have read. We hope to meet you soon!
