October 2016
Dear Friends
We hear so much about human rights these days and everyone is keen to claim
what are their perceived rights. In some cases, this means that those with the
loudest voice get their needs sorted out before those who are weaker and perhaps
in greater need. A few years ago on the ‘Any Question’ programme on Radio 4
somebody asked the question, ‘do animals have rights?’ The first person to
answer this question said that asking about rights is looking at the question from
the wrong end and what we should be asking is what are our responsibilities
towards animals?
This set me thinking perhaps as well as having a bill of ‘Human Rights’ there
should be a bill of human responsibilities. Jesus was asked about this in the form
of a lawyer’s question ‘who is my neighbour?’
Jesus said we all have a responsibility to make sure that our neighbour, (our
fellow human beings), have all that they need. Jesus told the story of the Good
Samaritan. A man had been attacked by thieves and left for dead in the side of
the road, in the story the man had no right to be rescued but those who passed by
had a responsibility to care for him. Two passers-by who, it could be argued, had
the greatest responsibility to act, fail to help. The third passer-by, who was at
enmity with the fallen man undertook his human responsibility and did help the
man. It is he who is the true neighbour of the injured man.
Such a bill could in no way be one of equality because it would recognise that
those who have the most would also have the greater responsibility towards
others.
The whole ethos of such a bill would change our attitude from being aggrieved
because we are not getting what we feel we need to one of making sure we fulfil
our responsibilities to the needs of others.
As the poet, preacher and priest John Donne says: ‘Keep us, Lord, so awake in
the duties of our callings that we may sleep in thy peace and wake in glory.’

Wednesday Service
We are now having a short service in Wilby church at 9.15am every Wednesday morning. Everybody is welcome.

NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL
The council met for a routine meeting on 7 September 2016. Matters arising were:
Fund Raising A workshop will be held in Lavenham on Wednesday 19 October 2016 to provide information on
the various grants and sources of funding available to voluntary and community groups and parish
councils and tips on completing a strong applicat ion. Bookings and
further information can be obtained from: [email protected]
Dementia Support A programme of events to support those suffering from dementia and their carers is being mounted by
the District Council. Further details can be obtained from our District
Councillor Julie Flatman on 01986 798661 or email [email protected]
Highways Issues It has now been confirmed that the introduction of a speed limit on part of London City Road was not
approved as the application did not meet the required criteria (record of traffic incidents, traffic flow,
average speeds etc.). The damaged road opposite Church Close is being kept under observation and
will be repaired when resources permit. Action is awaited on damage to the verge on London City
Road at the Messuage Farm bend. The council is still seeking a meeting with Highways officials to
discuss traffic calming measures in Wilby.
Defibrillator A progress report is being sought on the installation of the defibrillator. In the meantime the council
has recorded its thanks to those members of the Village Hall committee who kindly cleaned out the
telephone box. Meetings 2017
The council has agreed its schedule of meetings for 2017 namely: 11 January, 1 March,
3 May (Annual Parish Meeting), 17 May (Annual Meeting of Parish Council), 5 July,
13 September and 1 November. Additional meetings will be held as necessary to deal with urgent
business falling outside these dates. All meetings will be held in the Village Hall starting at 7.30 pm,
unless advised to the contrary, and the public is welcome to attend.
Council Membership We are very pleased that a Wilby resident has come forward seeking to join the Council. His
application will be formally considered at the January 2017 meeting of council (the first opportunity
when all concerned can be present). We shall be losing a member of council at the January meeting
due to re-location and thus we are still likely to have two vacancies on the council at that time.
Whilst gender is not a determinant of membership, we are very conscious that women make up the
majority of the population of Wilby and that the council is currently all male.

NEWS FROM WILBY SCHOOL
If you have any queries regarding the School please contact
the School for more information on 01379 384708.
Welcome back: The new term started in the glorious sunshine that we have enjoyed over much of the summer
holidays and both children and teaching staff children came back looking refreshed and ready to
start the new-year with energy and enthusiasm. The school is looking smart and fresh too-the
grounds have been tidied and indoors improvements include new flooring and a coat of paint
here and there we are all feeling very proud of our school . I am delighted to have been awarded
the position of Interim Head-teacher and feel very privileged to be leading such an amazing
school into a new school year.
Learning and achievement: Our whole school topic this term is the Victorians and this month all of the children will have
the opportunity to take part in a Victorian day. Wren Class is off to The Museum of East An-
glian life and both Kingfisher and Owl Class will be visiting Gressenhall Museum. The children
will be dressing up as Victorians and will be encouraged to take part in a variety of daily activi-
ties as ‘Victorian children.’
By working together the Wilby team continue to strive towards securing the best outcomes for
all of our children. With this in mind whole school staff training this term includes a focus on
Dyslexia and Autism. All staff have been included in the training sessions ensuring a clear and
shared understanding of these issues which affect many children in Britain today
School and church links: The website has been updated to reflect amongst other things, school restructuring and staffing
changes. Over the coming weeks we will also be adding a ‘Values for Life page’ which will
give details of the important value for each half term that we will be learning about both in Col-
lective Worship and across the whole school day. Our current value is Truthfulness. You will be
able to find a special Home-School Values sheet on the website which gives lots of fun activi-
ties and suggestions for reflection for parents and children to complete together. Please join us
for our Harvest Festival Service in the church on October 20th at 2.15pm.
New school Kit
The school has purchased smart new PE kit so that our children will be looking at their very
best when they represent us at inter-school sporting fixtures. We also subsiding the new t-shirts
bearing the school logo so that children can wear them during their normal weekly sports les-
sons. They look fantastic!
Open Day Everyone is welcome to join us for our Open Morning this term on October 18th. There will be
a range of lessons and activities on display for visitors to view and take part in.

NEWS FROM WILBY CORONATION HALL Charity Number: 30483959
“Striving for something for everyone”
As many of you will already know sadly Tim Askew passed away at home on
Saturday, 10th September. Tim will be fondly remembered and much missed by so many peo-
ple. In Tim’s lifetime he supported the Village Hall in various ways and always contributed
both to the upkeep of the hall and its car park as well as helping out with numerous Village Hall
events. According to the minutes book Tim became a committee member on the 2nd October
2008, when he was quickly roped in to carrying out a variety of maintenance work. He was
always so generous to Village Hall events, knowledgable, sound in his advice and would do all
that he could to help. Our sympathy and thoughts are with his family and friends.
On a more uplifting note at the beginning of September we welcomed back Blackheart,
and although it was not well attended a relaxing and entertaining evening was had by all.

Please do join us for this very enjoyable community occasion.
Brundish Christmas Fair
2 pm Saturday, 26th November at Brundish Village Hall
The success of this much loved community event depends on everyone
contributing in some way, if they can. But the most important contribution is
made by turning up. Please make sure this day doesn’t clash with anything else
you might do. Why not put your village first, at least for one day. In November, a
request form will be circulated around the village asking for contributions to the
Grand Raffle, Home produce stall or tombola. All donations should be given to
David Mulrenan on 01728 628063 or Sandra Apps on 01728 628607.
Please do what you can. Thank you very much.
Brave the Shave!
Lucy Mulrenan of Sunnyside Cottages has decided to raise money for this cancer
research charity by having her hair shaved off in memory of her uncle, Len Cow-
ard who died in April this year. If anyone would like to donate to this very wor-
thy cause, Lucy would be very grateful. This can be done online using the web-
site, www.bravetheshave.co.uk search Lucy Mulrenan in the “donate to a brave
shaver” page.
On behalf of Lucy, thank you very much.

ST LAWRENCE’S CHURCH, BRUNDISH
Brundish Harvest Festival
6.30 pm Sunday, 16th October at St. Lawrence’s Church
Our Harvest celebrations conclude with this time-honoured service of
thanksgiving. The Chantry Singers will be present with what we hope to be a
large congregation. There are some services throughout the year which are part
and parcel of the ebb and flow of village life. Brundish is a village where
agriculture is still prominent and so such a service is most appropriate. Why not
join us? It is one of the most delightful and most uplifting services of the year.
Please come.
Wingfield and District Gardening Club We begin the Autumn season at 7.30 on Thursday, September 29th
in Brundish Village Hall with a talk by Lucinda Skinner
from Woottens of Wenhaston on Irises.
Anyone who came to her presentation on propagation will know what a
wonderful evening this will be.
Juice and wine on sale. Non-members always welcome - £3 at the door.

Brundish Film Programme – Autumn 2016
The film programme for the period I November to 31 December 2016 has now been
confirmed as follows:
Thursday 10th November – My Kind of Traitor
Another screen adaptation of a John Le Carré novel , a young British couple (played by
Ewan McGregor and Naomi Harris) on holiday in Morocco encounter a Russian oligarch
who seeks their help to defect thereby involving them in the dangerous world of
international espionage as they find themselves positioned between the Russian Mafia
and the British Intelligence Services, neither of whom they can trust. Stellan Skarsgard
plays the oligarch and Damian Lewis an MI6 operative.
Thursday 8th December – Golden Years
Fate, the pensions crisis and a steadfast refusal to accept the injustice of old age contrive
to force a law abiding retired couple into a life of crime. Refusing to take the loss of their
pensions lying down they decide to take back what was theirs in the first place by
robbing banks. Like an Ealing comedy of yesteryear this is a catalogue of verbal and
physical laughs delivered by a professional cast including Bernard Hill, Phil Davis,
Simon Callow, Alun Armstrong, Una Stubbs, Sue Johnston and Virginia McKenna.
All the films will start at 7.30 pm in Brundish Village Hall with doors opening at 7 pm.
Further details of each film will be provided nearer the dates concerned.

Bottle Bank The bottle bank at The Crown’s car park has raised £87.86 recently, which
Lesley and Mario very kindly donate to Brundish Village Hall.
All thanks to them and all who use this facility so regularly.
Hello and Goodbye
A big Brundish welcome to Lisa and Nick and family who have recently moved
into The Firs, Stradbroke Road.
We hope that they will be very happy in their new home.
Leaving The Firs are Amanda and Martin Harrison who are moving to
Norfolk. We wish them both well in the future.
Meanwhile, Ivan Emeny has moved from Brundish after spending most of his
life in the village, 37 years of it at Sunnyside Cottages. Ivan is moving to Diss to
be where there are more amenities for him to enjoy. We hope Ivan will be very
happy in his new home.
Brundish Film – Thursday 13 October
We start our new season of films on Thursday 13 October with a showing of the
comedy Love and Friendship. Based on a Jane Austen novella “Susan”, this
screen adaptation shows the scandalous and legendary flirt Lady Susan Vernon
escaping to the estate of her in-laws , to avoid the colourful rumours about her
dalliances circulating in polite society, and making best use of her time by
seeking a husband for her daughter and for herself. With Kate Beckinsale in the
leading role supported by Chloë Sevigny and Xavier Samuel (and Stephen Fry in
a cameo role), the excellent cast delivers witty dialogue the whole giving a
fresh approach to costume drama: in the words of a critic “It is simply great fun.”
Doors open at 7 pm for a 7.30 pm start. Ticket prices remain at £5 for adults and
£4.50 for under 18s. Wine and juice on sale. To reserve your place please call

regularly use Facebook and twitter to share information about our area.
We are also agents for National Express Coaches and front of house for the Museum of

If you have an event that could do with some extra publicity, bring us a poster,
or pop in to ask about a bigger display on our board.
