St Mary3 Girls Reach Finals ofJunkkouture

Art students DanielleKinney and OdetaZirrar1qy'te reached the

Semi Finals of the Junkkouture Competition. Bothcontestants travelled to Derry to compete in the Millenniumforum in March 2013.It was St Mary's first time entering so

Junk Kouture in association with the European RecyclingPlatform (ERP) is a national competition for second levelstudents in Ireland and Northern Ireland which challengesteenagers to create high-end wearable fashion from everydayjunk that would normally find its way into the bin. JunkKouture aims to inspire and ignite passion in teenagers whileat the same time subtly educating them about the importanceof recycling and reusing waste for the good of the planet.

In the last two years, Junk Kouture has established itself as thepremier fashion competition for teenagers throughout Ireland.

Danielle and Odeta, both 6th year students workedtirelessly to create these masterpieces. Danielle's 'ToySoldier' ensemble is based on the theme of stolenchildhood. Odeta's creation entitled'A Flight of Fancy'reflected her personal voyage uprooting from Lithuaniaand her journey to Ireland. Both outfits are madeentirely from recyclable materials. The majority ofDanielle's costume is made from broken toys, alongwith the waste from the hole puncher and Odeta's iscreated from leaves, seatbelts and black bin bags.

Danielle Kinney and her supporters, from St Mary's,travelled to the Bord Gais Theatre in Dublin for thefinal of the competition in April and after a very nailbiting competition, Danielle and another studentreceived equal votes fromthe judges. However,Danielle was placed secondafter the Internet votes werecounted.

My Experience as a Ist Year in St Mary's High School.

My name is Jessica Harris and I am 12 years old. I wish to relay my experience as a first year. St Mary's isagreat school and all the teachers and staffare so friendly and helpful. The subjects here are taughtextremely well, and the teachers make sure you understand everlthing before they move onto a new topic..

I enjoy so many subjects, in Maths class we have so much fun. Our teacher, Mrs Kearney calls it 'FunFriday'. We play and are challenged to become competitive and achieve success.

In Drama, we learn scripts from different plays. As a group we were enjoying a play named "It's onlyan animal." I played the character Jodie and she had a cat named Boots. I loved this play because I havelots of cats and I love animals. At the moment we are studying the play Macbeth. This is one ofShakespeare's popular plays and although we are only first years I love studying it.

In Art we are experiencing lots of different drawings and shadings. We draw shoes, pets, pencil cases

and our dream world. I loved a project we did last term about African art. This was part of a "ConnectedLearning Project" where we studied Africa in many subjects. This all tied in with our sister- school, St.Mary's, in Nigeria. We support this school and have fund raising events throughout the school year. I feelvery proud that we are contributing to such a worthy cause.

In History, we were studying the Normans and we were fortunate to see a play about the Normans. Wealso went on a trip to the 'American Folk Park' at Halloween and learned all about old Irish customs andtraditions.

In Technology, we have made 'Key fobs' and we are also in the process of building an 'electronic doorbuzzer'. Our teacher Mr Magee makes it fun.

While in Music class, we learn about the keyboards and also about the different musical notes and howto draw them. One of the first year classes were involved in the "Pathways Project" and got to play a newinstrument for a year. They are putting on a performance for parents during our presentation of awards inJune.

In French class, we learn so much, about the language and the culture. I know I love to learn newlanguages, but French is awesome, with all the weird pronunciations and words, it is confusing, but stillfun. We all have French pen pals. My pen pal is a boy named Luise. We have got some things in commonand it is fun writing letters in French. May be I will meet him some day if he comes to Ireland on holiday.

Also the School Council organized a school disco, with a tuck shop, the treats were delicious. We had so

much fun dancing to the beat and watching people get presented with their awards for best dancers.

Right now the Drama teacher, Mrs McAllister, is organizing a "St Mary's Got Talent". Most acts are

singing and dancing. We love to get an opportunity to perform to an audience.

There are many after- school activities, such as Choir, Netball, Drama and Basketball. I have joined theDrama club. In this club we do acting, singing, dancingand playing wann-up games. The teacher is so kindand gives you tips on expressing yourself.

At St Mary's High School it is not hard to fit in ormake friends. When I first came I felt excited, but verynervous at the same time, because lrealized it was abig change for me, I was going from oldest in PrimarySchool to youngest in High School.

I actually found it is easier to make friends in HighSchool than in Primary School.

Time goes by quickly as you move from class to classduring the day and I can't believe my first Year iscoming to an end.
