Pentecost: The Church’s Birthday by Rev. Lawrence Rice, CSP Fortitude, Good Counsel, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. Of course, one of the remarkable elements of the story of the first Pentecost was the miracle of understanding, in which everyone in the diverse crowd in Jerusalem hears the disciples speaking in the listeners’ own language. This unique event is sometimes commemorated at masses for Pentecost Sunday by having people read sections of the story in a variety of different languages represented in the congregation. It’s a reminder that although we’ve heard the story before, we have inherited the mission of those first disciples. USCCB

USCCB

THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voic-es of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to pro-claim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sun-day the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus of-fered in today’s Gospel will we really know the

fullness of the Holy Spir-it. St. Paul assures us in to-day’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifesta-tions of the same Holy Spirit? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Catholic Communication Campaign

Next week, our parish will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through television, radio, social media, podcast, and print media. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Jubilee Year of Mercy

Solemnity of Pentecost

Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis challenged us to proclaim God’s mercy “to everyone without ex-ception . . . again and again, with new enthusi-asm and renewed pasto-ral action” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Pentecost proclaims that the door locked for fifty days is thrown open at last. No longer closed in on itself, the community speaks to crowds from different backgrounds, distant lands, exotic languages. Everyone hears their native language. The Spirit does not restore Babel’s uniformity, but forges unity-in-diversity of language, race,

nationality—embracing all without exception. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pentecost’s Spirit summons us afresh from mediocrity and isolation to share God’s mercy with the world. “This is our mission!” Francis exclaims. We are “given the gift of the ‘tongue’ of the Gospel and the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit, so that while we proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm . . . the heart of the peoples, drawing near to Him, the way, the truth, and the life” (Regina Coeli address, Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Women’s Catholic Scripture Study Women’s Catholic Scripture Study of San Mateo County invites you to join us in our upcoming study, In the Beginning, the Book of Genesis. This Catholic Bible study from Turning to God's Word examines the earliest events in biblical history to consider how they’ve shaped our Christian faith. Our 28-week study begins September 8 and ends May 11 (with holiday breaks). Participants prepare by reading the Bible passages and lesson pages (writing responses to the questions is optional). Our gatherings include an opening session, small group discussions, and a wrap-up reflection. For more information, visit our website, www.cssbelmont.com To receive an appli-cation to join us, please contact either Diane Masetti: [email protected] or 650-593-3681 or Tami Palladino: [email protected] or 650-591-7349, extension 405. Thank you.

Stewardship by the Book One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God’s word in his or her own language. The meaning for steward-ship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be.
