DEACON DOUG’S DIGEST

In light of all the stress and worry of contemporary

living that permeates our being and negatively impacts

our relationships the following tweet (Saturday,

August 5) from Pope Francis takes on particular

relevance:

“Other people are gifts to be received with

respect, especially if they are weak and frail,

because Christ comes to meet us in them.”

With the dangerous and increasing threat from

North Korea and a downward spiraling of relations

with Russia, certainly they would not be too few, who

would question the sanity of such a statement. Given

our innate mistrust, most would find it absolutely

absurd. We might ask ourselves, how could Christ

possibly come to meet us in such an irrational man

who even today threatened to reciprocate against us a

thousand fold?

Perhaps, such is the case also concerning the topic

of immigration. Certainly this too, is a hot button

issue which often times brings out the worst in us. It

exposes our prejudice and fears, divides and

diminishes us, and creates visions of walls that

separate rather than, bridges that connect and unite.

How could it be that in those who not only look

different, but, think and live differently weak and frail

as they may be, I meet Christ in them?

Closer to home and to a lesser degree than the

above mentioned topics, we find ourselves dealing

with the ongoing effort of collaboration in the

Archdiocese of Boston. We still deal with the

remnants of the round of parish closings that took

place some years ago. Additionally, as much as we

have made great inroads in our relationships with

people of other faiths, there exists at times an “us

versus them” attitude toward our neighboring faith

communities. How do we learn to see our sisters and

brothers in faith as gifts that have earned our respect in

the fleshing out of their relationship with Jesus? How

do we come to a place where collaboration is not about

losing our identity, but, broadening the horizons of our

understanding of what it means to be Church? That in

the best sense of what Pope Francis says, Christ indeed

comes to meet us.

way to raise awareness about the need to spread the Good

News to the more than one billion people in the world who

have yet to hear it proclaimed.

missionaries bring the Gospel to people in need around the

world.
