Terry’s Sharing… While we are a people who crave and cherish instant access to what is going on, we need to develop filters for ourselves. Obvi- ously we as the family of God use the filter of the Scripture and Sacraments. Even then as adults we often feel confused and overwhelmed. Does it not make sense that our children are af- fected even more? I have no doubt that there is a lot of wonder- ful life-giving and loving things happening. Yet we seem to be obsessed with all the bad or negative news in our culture. There- fore, a necessary balance is often not seen in our media. It makes our role as guides and protectors of our children so essential. Through the elections and so many other current situations, a lot of fear and hurtful hate has come to the center of our livelihood. The stress levels have sky-rocketed. I have been pleased to see how teachers in the public schools have stepped up to make our children feel safe and secure. I, also with great pride, am so grateful to the rich blessing we have here at St. Michael with our Catholic School. What a profound blessing to be able to openly use faith in caring for our children in this time of uncertainty and fear. (I am also grateful for the religious education teachers for their faith-filled commitment to our children to stand with them in this journey of faith.) I want to share with you the following talk given to the students of our school by our principal Lisa Huemoeller. I am sure you too are grateful and proud of the wonderful school here at St. Michael. The children of St. Mi- chael are a precious treasure from God and our sacred duty as His family. Let all of us protect and nurture that gift. Here is what Principal Huemoeller said: Good Morning! To form a community of faith and learning by promoting a Catholic way of life through the Gospel values and academic excellence. This is our mission as stated by the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools. I have heard from some students and staff about stresses or concerns that have arisen due to the campaign and election. Even now that the outcome is known, some of those concerns may persist. One of the greatest blessings of living in the United States of America is that we live in a country where elections determine a peaceful transition of power from one leader to the next, even when the candidates of our choice do not prevail. We know and trust that our republic will survive and that systems are in place to preserve peace and safety for all. One of the greatest blessings of St. Michael School is that we live and learn in a community where civil discourse and respect for differing viewpoints are valued and honored. Our commit- ment to Christian values means that we welcome people of all faiths, backgrounds and nationalities, and seek to live and serve each other - not ourselves, in peace and love. Our value of Community means that we care for one another, respect human differences and traditions, and respond to the needs of others as we promote justice for all. Living out these values means that we value each other as human beings, speak and act with acceptance, humility, care and respect, especially when we disagree. God has allowed us to have free will and opinions for our own, however there is a right way to disagree and share those opinions. This is through acts of mercy and re- spect. We know that Jesus lives in each of our hearts, so when we say and treat people unkindly, we are ultimately saying and treat- ing Jesus unkindly. As elementary age children, our staff is asking you to limit your time on social media and watching the news. We want you to go outside, get fresh air, play a game with your parents, read a book, take a nap, be a kid! The situations on social media are not always correct and the situations you are watching are a long way from Sioux Falls, SD, we can not control those situations. We need to focus on what we can control: how we treat each other, respecting your parents and listening to them the first time, listening to our teachers and putting our best effort into our school work, and being honest and trustworthy. As we celebrate Veteran’s Day, let us be thankful for the men and women who have and continue to put their country first to keep us safe. At St. Michael School you are safe. If you are feeling uneasy or anxious, please talk to your par- ents, teachers, Fr. Terry, Fr. Nicholas, or Deacon John. We all want to help you. Several counselors, not trying to tell anyone how to parent, but wanting to offer parents some support, have made some of the following suggestions in dealing with student anxiety: - Limit the amount of time on devices (there is a growing num- ber of students with anxiety disorders and depression due to the rapid pace and instant gratification provided by gaming). - Limit the exposure of social media and news reports (children can not process all of the information and do not understand the distance between places of the world). - Be mindful of adult conversations, even when the children do not appear to be listening. - Consider child development - children are not mini adults and all information is not appropriate for them. - Children may not be able to express their anxiety or know what to do with their hurt and anger. Watch for it coming out in their actions with people and things. - Be consistent with routines and expectations. Who does not want the best for our children? Can we do anything less than our best? How we treat our children is our thanks to God for that gift! Thank you for entrusting the Parish family with that gift! Let us all do our part. +++ A tidbit of thought: Eight of my last ten wedding couples shared with me that part of their dating experience and part of what they felt attracted to was going to church with each other. Yah!

Happy Thanksgiving I hope that each one of you know how thankful we are to have you

here at St Michael. I hope each of you will spend some quality family time, revive your spirit and review priorities.

Now the scoop about your Thanksgiving meal - MODERATION is the key. Turkey provides essential amino acids to help fight infections. Pumpkin pie provides fiber, antioxidants. Cranberries are a source of flavonoids and protect against infections, heart disease and inflammation. Sweet potatoes are a source of Vitamin A, necessary for our eyes, bones, and skin. Even dressing has nutritional value with celery, leeks, and garlic. ENJOY
