Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apos-tles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). The Jewish feast of Pentecost was both a harvest fes val and a celebra‐

on of the giving of the law on Mount Sinai a er the Passover. The events surrounding the giving of the law can be seen in Exodus, chap‐ters 19 and 20. God demonstrated his power with remarkable signs on Sinai so that the covenant formed with Israel might be riveted in the memories of his people. The author of the Book of Hebrews speaks of these events in Exodus, contras ng it with the new Chris an covenant: “You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm and a trumpet blast and a voice speaking words such that those who heard begged that no message be further addressed to them,” (The author of Hebrews goes on to say, “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,” (v. 22; RSV: 2CE). He goes on to also men on the angels and the assembly of the first‐born of a new covenant, the media‐tor of which is not Moses, but Jesus, God Incarnate. Pentecost is this new covenant assembly on Mount Zion, the loca on of the Upper Room where Mary and the Apostles gath‐ered in prayer to await the gi of God’s Spirit and the fullness of the new covenant in Christ. When we assemble for Mass with the angels and the first‐born above to recall that event, we are taken up into that origina ng event of our faith and united with the heavenly Jerusalem.

In one Spirit we are bap zed into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). In this passage from Paul’s great ec‐clesiological (rela ng to the theology of the Church) chapter from 1 Corin‐thians, we see that God’s new cove‐nant people are Spirit‐formed. The principle theme is the unity of the Church born from the one Spirit who inspires all the various gi s with

which we are to be endowed. St. Paul’s experience was of a Church rich in spiritual gi s, so that he could say, “To each individual the manifes‐ta on of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” In the Revised Standard Version the same text (12:7) is ren‐dered, “To each is given the manifes‐ta on of the Spirit for the common good.”

We might want to ask ourselves: In what way do I manifest the Spirit to others for the common good of the Church? And if we want to get some ideas as to how we might manifest the Spirit, we should read the middle verses of this passage, which we don’t hear at Mass, 12:8‐10. There we see that wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, tongues, and the interpreta on of tongues are given to each one individually as the Spirit wills (v. 11). Is this the Church

we see today? If not, perhaps we have not yielded to the coming of the Spirit. This is the day to begin.

Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). In the feast of the Ascension we not‐ed that the Gospel reading for that day actually reported an event prior to the Ascension, a mee ng a er the Resurrec on of Jesus and his disci‐ples in Galilee, during which Jesus told them that they were to disperse throughout the world bap zing and making disciples. Similarly, in the readings for Pentecost we hear about a post‐Resurrec on appear‐ance of Jesus to his Apostles prior to Pentecost, in which he tells them about a cri cal part of their future ministry. Though on the Ascension Jesus instructed the Apostles in their ministry of teaching and Bap sm, today he gives them the power to forgive sins in the Sacrament of Rec‐oncilia on. Jesus breathes the Spirit on them for this purpose, saying to his bishops, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Here Jesus echoes what he had said earlier to them: “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Ma hew 18:18). Now they receive the gi of the Spirit to perform that ministry. Of all the wonderful gi s that the Spirit bestows upon the Church, this is perhaps one of the greatest, com‐ing to us through the ministry of our bishops and priests.

T his week we celebrate Pen‐tecost, the feast of the Church’s birth. With a roar‐

ing of the heavens and in tongues of fire, the Holy Spirit comes and en‐lightens the Apostles. Peter begins to preach with boldness and authority what Christ’s life and Death truly means. From that moment, the great mission of the Church begins. The Apostles were emboldened to spread the Gos‐pel, not on their own, but through the power of the Holy Spirit who de‐scended on the upper room that spring day. Who and what is the Holy Spirit? In many ways, the Holy Spirit is the most difficult of the three Persons of the Trinity for us to comprehend, yet he is fully and truly God, co‐equal with the Father and Son. Indeed, the Holy Spirit is the bond of love

between the Father and the Son. The mutual, eternal, perfect love of the Father and the Son is the third Per‐son of the Holy Trinity— the Holy Spirit. When we are bap zed, the Holy Spir‐it is breathed into our souls, but the Spirit’s work within us is intensified in the Sacrament of Confirma on. When we are confirmed, like the Apostles, we are strengthened to give greater witness to the faith. The Holy Spirit comes to each of us, be‐stowing his gi s. He directs us in a par cular way, as a member of the Body of Christ, for the common good of the en re Church.

“Bap sm, the Eucharist, and the sac‐rament of Confirma on together cons tute the ‘sacraments of Chris‐

an ini a on,’ whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the recep on of the sacrament of Confirma on is neces‐sary for the comple on of bap smal grace.89 For ‘by the sacrament of Confirma on, [the bap zed] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.’”90 —CCC 1285 Watch the short Opening the Word

“The Spirit makes one man a teacher of divine truth, inspires another to prophesy, gives another the power of cas ng out devils, enables anoth‐er to interpret holy Scripture. The Spirit strengthens one man’s self‐control, shows another how to help the poor, teaches another to fast and lead a life of asce cism, makes another oblivious to the needs of the body, trains another for martyrdom. His ac on is different in differ‐ent people, but the Spirit himself is always the same.” (St. Cyril) What ac on of the Holy Spirit that St. Cyril men ons do you no ce most in your life? What ac on of the Spirit do you want to allow more into your life? Spend a few minutes in silent prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to help you in that way.

Once you have determined a poten al gi of the Spirit in your life, con‐sider ways that you might bring that gi into fullness in your family, your work, and your parish.

At Bap sm, you received the Holy Spir‐it, but He is ac vated in your soul at Confirma on in a "… special outpour‐ing of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pente‐cost." From this fact, Confirma on brings an increase and deepening of bap smal grace: it roots us more deeply in the di‐

vine filia on which makes us cry, "Abba! Father!"

it unites us more firmly to Christ; it increases the gi s of the Holy

Spirit in us; it renders our bond with the

Church more perfect

Events: Bishop’s Appeal Commitment Week-end. Trinity Sunday is a moveable feast celebrated a week a er Pentecost Sunday. Also known as Holy Trinity Sunday, Trinity Sunday honors the most fundamental of Chris an be‐liefs—belief in the Holy Trinity. The human mind can never fully under‐stand the mystery of the Trinity, but we can sum it up in the following formula: God is three Persons in one Nature. There is only one God, and the three Persons of God—the Fa‐ther, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—are all equally God, and They cannot be divided.

SUNDAY, JUNE 11

In the Middle Ages, sequences were added to the liturgy to expand on and explain the meaning of certain feasts and celebra ons. Today only four re‐main: the obligatory ones on Easter and Pentecost and op onal ones on The Most Holy Body and Blood (Corpus Chris ) and Our Lady of Sor‐rows. Most o en, the sequences were a ached to the gospel acclama‐

on.

At the beginning and end of the great Easter season, the faithful proclaim: “Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous: The Prince of life, who died, reigns immor‐tal” (Easter Sequence); “Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the fro‐zen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray” (Pentecost Sequence). The Pentecost sequence is a beau ‐ful composi on a ributed to the late

12th/early 13th century Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton. This composi on captures a wide range of ac vi es of the Spirit, among them bringer of light, source of goods for the poor and all of us, comforter, sweet refreshment, solace, healer, strength, guide, source of joy. On this day when the church celebrates the coming of the Spirit and the sending of the disciples to con nue Jesus’ sav‐ing mission, it is especially fi ng to draw a en on to the Gospel as we sing our request for the Spirit to come and dwell within us.
