Sunday, February 5, 2017 To all who are present with us this morning, Welcome, and thank you for being here! Please join us for “coffee and…” in the Fellowship Hall following Divine Liturgy. You May Find the Text of the Divine Liturgy beginning on the bottom of page 91 of the Service Book (gold embossed cross on the reddish brown cover) or in the green-spiral-bound book; sheet music can be found in the 8.5x 11large, spiral-bound booklet. At the Kiss of Peace our practice is for each of us to greet the person to our right and left with the bowing of our head, hands held in a prayerful clasp or crossed on the chest, while offering each other the seasonal Christian greeting, Christ is in our midst!and responding, He is and shall be!Please remember that Holy Communion is reserved for those Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have appropriately prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and Confession to receive the Holy Mysteries of the Church. The bread (antidoron, which means in placeof the gifts) which we share after Communion and at the end of the Liturgy is for all. Being mindful we are in church, let us always remember to...be quiet and attentive. Let us sing, pray, stand, sit, kneel and respond where responses are indicated. Let us not talk, look around, text message, play games, etc. Especially let us work at this in the Communion line and when in line to venerate the Cross and depart. If we cannot hear the post- Communion prayers being chanted during our church departure, we are way too noisy. ...refrain from eating, drinking or chewing gum. (most obviously and especially if you will be receiving Holy Communion). ...stay put. At the Kiss of Peace our practice is for each of us to greet the person to our right and left with the bowing of our head, hands held in a prayerful clasp or crossed on the chest, while offering each other the seasonal Christian greeting, “Christ is in our midst!” and responding, “He is and shall be!”

Please remember that Holy Communion is reserved for those Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have appropriately prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and Confession to receive the Holy Mysteries of the Church. THE EPISTLE READING Second Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy (3:10-15)

T IMOTHY, MY SON, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, and my sufferings; and what

befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra. What persecutions I endured; yet from them all, the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

THE HOLY GOSPEL According to St. Luke (18:10-14)

T HE LORD SPOKE THIS PARABLE: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God,

I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to Heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” _____________________________________________________________

“Food on the Hill” Lunch Ministry “Food on the Hill” is the name that has been attached to the lunch for those in need that will be prepared and served free of charge on the first Tuesday of each month . Our Men’s Fellowship has continued to take on the work of providing a bit of “daily” bread to those who can benefit from it.

The next “Food on the Hill” lunch is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.

Anyone who would like to support “Food on the Hill” in any capacity you would like, should contact Gus Flizanes. Please make checks out to “St. Michael’s Church” with “Food on the Hill” on the memo line. If you can possibly also help provide transportation on the day of the luncheon, please contact Gus.

St. Michael’s parishioners volunteer their time and energy in the preparation, hosting and serving of the luncheon to help feed some hungry people at First Evangelical Lutheran Church on South Main Street on the second Wednesday of every other month. If you are interested in joining us in this worthwhile community effort, please contact Michele Murray at 724-837-2244.

The Volunteer sign-up sheet is posted in the Fellowship Hall.

St. Michael’s next hosted meal is: Wednesday, February 8th from 11:30-1:00PM

First Evangelical Lutheran Church 246 South Main St., Greensburg

What’s Next, Ladies? Come and see on Sunday, February 19.

On Sunday, January 15, thirty-seven women of our church went out to lunch to celebrate the recently accomplished holidays and the New Year. Rodney’s Restaurant was the location of the luncheon and all in attendance enjoyed each other’s company and the delicious food. During the short and informal business part of this gathering of our Antiochian Women, thanks was expressed to all those who led and participated in the Women’s work during the year just completed. We were also advised of the need for elections in the near future to discover who would be leading us forward in 2017. Outgoing officers Sara Armanious, Michelle Gajewski, Carolyn Hill and Constance Volchko were thankfully acknowledged for their contribution as they completed their service to our church through the Antichian Women to this point. On Sunday, February 19, following Divine Liturgy, the women of Saint Michael’s are invited to gather again for a special time of fellowship in the multi-purpose room. This will not be a typical business meeting but will hopefully continue the spirit of our holiday gathering in letting us get to know each other better and discover how God is calling us to use our talent and energy to serve God, His Church and His people. We encourage all women of St. Michael’s, especially those of us who do not think of ourselves as “members” of the women’s group, to come join us as we envision our upcoming work together to support various spiritual, fundraising, social, and humanitarian activities in the coming year. We welcome your talents and ideas but we will never know what they are unless you share them with us. (We are in particular need for women who would be willing to serve in leadership roles.) So come join us on February 19 and learn about and help create our service in the coming year. And should you be so moved, consider accepting a leadership role with our Antiochian Women. (If you want to know more about the responsibilities of the leadership positions that are available, contact Sara Armanious at [email protected] or Michelle Gajewski at [email protected]. ______________________________________________________________

On Saturday evening, February 11, there will be visitors here at St. Michael’s for 6:00 PM Great Vespers. A class from St. Vincent College, taught by our Choir Director, Khourieh Stefanie Yazge, will be in attendance. While we would never encourage dishonesty in any of our personal interactions, wouldn’t it be fun if these students left our church thinking to themselves, “Wow, how amazing that so many people come to begin the Lord’s Day on Saturday night in a simple worship service where they don’t even get Holy Communion!” Conversely, wouldn’t it be sad if they depart our church thinking to themselves, “Geez, I wonder why they bother turning on the lights and heat? If our class wasn’t here the place would’ve been empty.” It might also make some of us think a little about our participation if we consider that those students in one visit on Saturday night will exceed most of our attendance for that service this year. Hmmm. ________________________________________________________

CALEB’S CUPBOARD is always in need of contributions. The ‘Cupboard’ is the big chest you see as you come through the main entrance of our church.. It is a very simple way to help our hungry neighbors. If you could bring in a few cans of food, cereal, pasta, paper goods or other nonperishables when you come to church, you will be making a big difference for someone in need. Also, please check that the goods you bring are “reasonably” close in time to the expiration date. In particularly high demand are donations of personal care items such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, diapers, wipes and feminine hygiene products.

THE JOURNEY TO HUMILITY

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” — St. Paul to the Galatians, 2:20
