John 6:1-15
“Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.” Creflo
Dollar [his real name] is a “prosperity preacher” at his Atlanta-area based church. He is asking people to give him $65,000,000 to buy a
Gulfstream G650 jet. And the only “miracle” preacher Dollar seems to perform is to convince people to give him $65,000,000 to buy a
jet. Contrast that with the young boy who gave Jesus his basket of fish, and did not keep any for himself; and Jesus, who blessed it and,
without keeping any for himself, gave it to the disciples to give to the people who had not brought provisions when they went to hear
Jesus. Then, when the crowd had their fill, and the disciples collected twelve basket full of fish and bread, Jesus did not tell the disci-
ples to sell the leftovers so he could buy the best horse and most comfortable saddle. He did not try to take advantage of the people for
profit or power. He withdrew to the mountain to be alone. He gave the people the opportunity to learn that acts of generosity, like that
of the young boy and himself, are a challenge to us to choose to be generous to others.

17th Sunday of the YRB
1st Reading (2KGS 4:42-44) A man from Baal-Shalishah brought bread from the first fruits of his farm to the man of God Elisha and said “Give it to the people to eat” (2KGS 4:22-42).
2nd Reading (EPH 4:1-6) Paul tells us that we have one Body, one Lord, one Faith, One Baptism, One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Gospel (JN 6:1-15) Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining.
The theme of our Reflection: Jesus invites us to cooperate with Him in working miracles.
One day a middle-aged woman came into the midst of this poverty and cruelty. She saw the tragic situation and said to herself “Somethings got to be done”. She took all the money she had and rented an old building with a dirt floor. The building wasn’t much, but it would do. The next day the woman went around the neighborhood and offered to teach the children. She used the old building as her classroom. She had no desks, no chairs, no table. Her chalk-board was the dirt floor. She rubbed it smooth with an old rag and wrote on it with a stick.
That was the way the woman fought back against the poverty and cruel-ty around her. It was a pathetic response, but it was the best one could do. To-day she has 80 fully equipped schools, 300 modern mobile dispensaries, 70 lep-rosy clinics, 30 homes for the dying, 30 homes for abandoned children, 40,000 volunteers worldwide helping her. The woman of course is Mother Teresa.
Take the first reading and the Gospel reading today. In the 1st Reading a man offered bread from his 1st fruit to Elisha to feed the people. With his bread the people were served and they were satisfied. In the Gospel, the boy had five loaves and two fish. Jesus asked him for them to feed the crowd. The boy gave them to Jesus and Jesus did the rest. He fed over 5,000 people. That’s what Mother Teresa did too, She gave Jesus her loaves and fish an Jesus did the rest. He multiplied them in a way beyond her dreams. The story of Mother Teresa, the man in the 1st reading and the boy in the Gospel reading today make the same point.
Today’s reading invite us to look into our hearts and to ask ourselves this question: How much of our resources and our lives are we currently placing in the hands of Jesus to do as He wishes? To what extent are we giving ourselves and resources as Mother Teresa did, as the man in the 1st reading and the boy in the Gospel. Jesus is saying to us today, I need your talent, I need your generosi-ty, I need you, I need your time, I need your feet, I need your hand, I need your tongue. I have only your hands to reach out to the helpless, the homeless, and the hopeless. I have only your bread to feed the people. Jesus invites us to coop-erate with Him in working miracles. Whatever we give Him, our Time, our Tal-ents, our Prayers, our Sacrifices, our Resources– He will use in a way that will exceed our greatest expectation.
Have a Blessed and Wonderful Sunday!
