REQUESTS FOR SCHEDULE CHANGES (2019-2020 School Year): In February students participated in the course selection process and entered their course requests through PlusPortals. These requests, both in written and electronic formats, are considered a commitment on the part of the students to attend the classes they have asked St. Michael to provide. Students are ex-pected to remain in their chosen classes for the entire 2019-2020 school year or in the case of one semester classes, until the end of the semester. By sign-ing the St. Michael High School Course Selection Sheet, parents/guardians are confirming their approval of the student's course selection and understand that these course selections are final except under the most critical circumstances. If a schedule change must be considered and is deemed unavoidable (i.e. error in the schedule; failure to meet requirements for graduation, TOPS, the Board of Regents, college admissions, etc.; or the student no longer meets the re-quirements for the course in which he/she enrolled for the 2019-2020 school year), the parent(s)/guardian(s) must provide school counselors with a written request for the schedule change. The letter must include the following infor-mation: the title of the course which is proposed to be dropped from the stu-dent's schedule, the title of the course to be added to the student's schedule, the rationale/reason for the request, the parent's/guardian's signature and date, as well as the student's signature and date. Schedule requests are to be submitted during the period of May 1 thru May 23. After May 23, a check for $25.00 made payable to St. Michael must be included with the written request for a schedule change. Only requests following this protocol will be considered. All written requests are to be submitted to the school counselor assigned to the student's grade level for the 2019-2020 school year. The names and assigned grade levels of school counselors are as follows:

Freshman Class Counselor: Ms. Lindsay Carlino Sophomore Class Counselor: Mrs. Caitlin Narretta Junior Class Counselor: Mrs. Katie Zylicz Senior Class Counselor and College Advisor: Ms. Cassie Montgomery

REQUIRED DATA FORM FOR GRADUATING SENIORS: All Required Data Forms for Graduating Seniors: Class of 2019, which were included in the graduation packets, were to be completed and returned to Ms. Berthelot in March. If your student has not turned in his/her completed Required Data Form with copies of the college acceptance and scholarship letters attached, please do so immediately. Be cer tain that both you (the parent/guardian) and your senior sign page 2 of this form. If your student receives letters of acceptance or scholarship offers after submission of the Required Data Form, please forward copies of this information as soon as possible. The only way we may publish this information is if parents or stu-dents share this information with us.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL:

SMHS is looking for parents, alumni, and individuals from the community interested in serving on the school Advisory Board or on a standing committee of the Board. The mission of the Advisory Board is to advise and support the administration of St. Michael High School as it seeks to carry out its mission of forming young people as committed disciples of Christ. If you or anyone you know is interested in serving on our board or on a committee, please fill out the attached form at the end of this newsletter and return it to Mrs. Melissa Guarisco. You may also request an elec-tronic copy from Melissa by phone 225-753-9782 ext. 17 or by email [email protected].

Just last month, the SMHS Student Council honored our faculty and staff with Teacher Appreciation Week. I join with the students in recognizing

the outstanding job of our teachers and our staff, often putting in long hours to help form our students into the young men and young women God calls them to be. Not only are they busy planning and grading outside of class time, but many dedicate long hours after school to clubs and sports. Our coaches especially work with our student-athletes to insure success on the field and in the classroom. St. Michael High School is blessed to have such devoted role models.

As we progress through this last nine weeks of the school year, it is important that we help our students focus and finish well. Please encourage your child to keep working towards their best right through final exams. We rely upon you, as parents, to be vigilant with us concerning your stu-dent’s successes and struggles in the classroom. Please check PlusPortals often and communicate with your child’s teacher should you have any questions or concerns.

The season of Easter is just a few weeks away. I encourage you to take some time with your family and prepare for this joyous cele-bration. Whether through participation in Mass, family prayer time, Reconciliation, Bible readings or family discussions about faith, be present to your family and strengthen those bonds that will sustain you and your children throughout your lives.

Yours in Christ,

Ellen B. Lee, Principal

WARRIOR FUND FOR EXCELLENCE:

To date we have received just over 180 contributions totaling just over $39,500. This

annual campaign is separate from the capital campaign and seeks to raise $50,000 to

grow and develop the St. Michael foundation, and address other needs. Our goal is

100% participation among all giving groups: parents, grandparents, alumni, and

friends. All gifts are appreciated.

Why Should I Give?

Tuition payments and related fees provide approximately 81% of the schools operating

budget. The Warrior Fund for Excellence provides a significant source of revenue that

helps bridge the gap between tuition income and the full cost of a St. Michael educa-

tion, including funding needed for need based and merit scholarships. The experience

of learning at St. Michael High School is an intense and rewarding one. While St. Mi-

chael carefully stewards its resources, the cost of this experience cannot be sustained by tuition alone. In the absence of a substantial en-

dowment, your support for the Warrior Fund for Excellence – Annual Fund plays a critical role in meeting the annual financial needs of the

school and its programs.

Make Your Gift Today!!

Visit http://www.smhsbr.org/giving/ to make your donation to the Warrior Fund for Excellence. Our goal is 100% participation among all

giving groups. All gifts are important no matter the size.

The Board’s role is that of adviso-ry to the school principal and the Diocesan superintendent in specific school matters. Meetings are usually held on the third Mon-day of the month beginning in August and ending in May, with the full Board and Board Committees alternating meetings bi-monthly. Special gatherings are called when necessary.

To be eligible to serve on the Advisory Board, a candidate must meet the following criteria:

Genuine commitment to Catholic school education;

Expertise in an area that contributes to the boards’ work;

Ability to make substantial time commitments to the work of the board;

Understanding of the purpose and structure of the school;

Attendance at the Annual Advisory Board Member Orientation provided by the Catholic Schools Office and the

Diocesan School Board;

Values and lifestyle consistent with Catholic doctrine and moral standards;

Employees and close relatives of employees of the school are not eligible to serve;

Represent the entire constituency objectively.

The Nominations Committee and the school principal will review all applications and will present a slate of potential candidates to the Bishop.
