SHEPHERD’S CORNER

This weekend we remember in a special

way the nativity of St. John the Baptist.

When we take a step backward from any

particular story from the Bible and take into view the

whole of salvation history as it is recorded in

Scripture, we see a centuries long process of saints

and angels, of people and prophets, preparing the

world for the coming of Christ. The Incarnation serves

as the key to unlocking the profound mysteries and

interconnections hidden in the narrative of the Old

Testament.

John the Baptist makes his way into our Christian

story in the New Testament, but he simply falls into

line as the ultimate herald and precursor of Christ in

the world. What is a marvel about John the Baptist is

the extent to which he serves as a model of the

Christian life. His life reminds us of the recent words

of Pope Francis: “life does not have a mission; life is a

mission.” From before his birth, the mission of John’s

life is foretold. His spends his days wholly dedicated

to making straight the way of the Lord. And when that

work is completed — when Christ has entered the

drama of human history and has begun his public

ministry — John the Baptist blesses the Lord and then

immediately leaves the story. He gives all of himself

to Christ, and seeks no glory, pride, or possession for

himself. His life is a life that is a mission itself.

We ought to spend some time in contemplation of the

example that John the Baptist gives to each of us. “Is

my faith a part of my life or is my faith my way of

life?” “Do I prepare the way for Christ to enter into

the lives of those around me?” “Do I want things for

myself beyond the love that God offers?” These are

hard questions. These are the kinds of questions that

do not fit well in our world today. But that doesn’t

mean that we should not ask them.

John the Baptist lived a life full of dramatic and

powerful actions. And perhaps that is a model of

sainthood that seems beyond our reach. But John also

lived a life of sanctity full of small, everyday gestures.

He belonged to family; he surely had friends. He lived

in community. And all of this — from this birth to his

death — was oriented toward preparing the world for

the coming of Christ.

May our lives be full of the kinds of gestures and

actions — whether small or large — that help us to

give ourselves over to Christ in mission.

RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

While we are still congratulating those who were

introduced to the Church at Easter, it is time to look

ahead to see who will be standing around the Baptismal

font next Easter. Are you or do you know someone who

might be interested in knowing more about the Catholic

Church? Invite them to the RCIA to see if this is what

they want. Please call the parish office to speak with

someone who can give you information.

Do you love the Lord so much that you want to let others

know about him? When Jesus ascended to Heaven, he left us all with a task: “Go, make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them . . . and teaching them to observe all that

I commanded you.” (Mt. 28:19) Perhaps you would like

to be part of the RCIA team. Give us a call in the Parish

Office.

take part in a Bible School experience, St. Clement’s is

planning one for July 16 to 29th. You can call them at
