Beginning and Ending the Mass with a Kiss

Catholics kiss many things such as a crucifix on Good Friday, a medal, statue, image or relic of a saint, or a rosary after prayer. Two kisses that might go unnoticed are the priest kissing the altar at the beginning and end of the Mass. What is the meaning of these kisses? Pope Francis spoke of them in his General Audience on December 20, 2017: “Normally, while the entrance hymn is sung, the priest, with the altar servers, approaches the altar in procession, and salutes it with a bow and, in a sign of veneration, kisses it and, when there is incense, incenses it. Why? Because the altar is Christ: it is the figure of Christ. When we look at the altar, we are looking exactly at Christ. The altar is Christ. These gestures, which could pass unobserved, are highly significant, because they express from the very beginning that the Mass is an encounter of love with Christ, who, by offering his Body on the Cross, became ‘the Priest, the Altar and the Lamb.’ The altar, in fact, as a symbol of Christ, is ‘the center of the thanksgiving that is accomplished through the Eucharist’; and the whole community [gathers] around the altar, which is Christ, not to look at each other, but to look at Christ, because Christ is at the center of the community.” At Mass, our encounter is not only with Christ, but also with the Communion of Saints. During the early centuries of the Church, the altar was often a stone placed over the tomb of a martyr. In John’s Revelation, he saw an altar in heaven and underneath it the souls of all the martyrs (Rev 6:9). When the altar is consecrated, relics of the saints are placed in it, and when the priest kisses the altar, he is also kissing these relics and invoking the prayers of the saints whose relics are within the altar. And so this encounter of love with Christ, the altar, and with His entire Church, begins and ends lovingly and reverently with a kiss.

The Acts of the Apostles provides us more than a history of the First Christians - it is the story about the Early Church with the Holy Spirit as the protagonist. Christ did not leave His Apostles alone - He sent the Holy Spirit to guide, instruct and equip them. Enrich and deepen your faith as you learn how the Apostles continued Christ’s mission on earth through the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Join Us for Catechetical Sunday

September 15th, 11am Mass All Faith Formation families are asked to attend this special 11:00 am Mass on September 15th, as we honor the vocation of our Catechists, who will receive a blessing as they begin the Catechetical year. Mass will be followed by a Hot Dog lunch. This is a great opportunity for your children to meet their Catechists and fellow classmates. Attendance at this Mass is considered mandatory and is a beautiful way to begin the school year together. Please stop by the Check In Table before the 11 Mass to retrieve your child's name tag.

We are looking forward to seeing you all there!

We Need Your Help! The Muffin People need more ladies and men to join us in collecting food that is about to reach the "Sell By Date" at retail stores such as Lunardi's, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, the three local Safeway Stores, Susie Cakes and Diablo Foods.  It takes twenty four vehicles a week to perform our MINISTRY of service to those in need.  We go in teams of three, four and five vehicles Monday thru Saturday and deliver this wonderful food to four shelters in Oakland who serve the elderly poor, abused or homeless women, poor families with young children in need and a day care center for working families unable to afford normal expensive day care.  You decide how often and what dates fit your schedule.   You can learn more about this MINISTRY by taking a ride with one of our members to see if it fills your desire to be of service to those so much in need. When you see the wonderful food and the urgent need we serve, you can't help but feel motivated and rewarded.  For information or to join, contact Jack Dice at 376-7189.

We’re Back!!! The St. Monica Women’s Club Book Reviews return on Tuesday, September 24th. To start the year off, Dee Humm will be the Reviewer. She has chosen “A Long Time Coming” by Arron Elkins. It is an Italian adventure set in Milan, concerning two lost Renoir paintings looted during World War II. Val Caruso, Curator in charge of the project, becomes trapped in an intricate web of art thieves, forgers and murder. Author Elkins gives the reader an Insider View of how museums operate as well as wonderful local color in and around Milan that will make you wish you could go back there. A light lunch will be served at 12:30pm followed by Review at 1:00pm. Cost: $5 per Review or $20 for six Reviews.

“This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 15, 2019, under the theme of “Stay with Us.” On this day, catechists are formally commissioned for ministry to the community. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each baptized person plays in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.” - The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
