Church Mission Statement

We the community of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church are of Eastern rite and Byzantine tradition. We are committed to sharing our faith, tradition, and God's Light by embracing & living out God's two greatest commandments:

a) love God with all your heart, soul, and mind b) love your neighbor as yourself Our church embodies the Ukrainian spirit, culture, and heritage while welcoming all races, ethnicities, & nationalities.

1. Easter Dinner-“Svyachene” – Today is our traditional Easter Dinner. Following the Divine Liturgy there will be the blessing of the Easter Food and delicious Easter Dinner.

2. Easter Joy - In our Eastern tradition, kneeling is the sign of penance and, since Easter is the time of Joy, we do not kneel from the Resurrection until Pentecost.

3. First Solemn Holy Communion is scheduled for May 6, 2018. Mark your calendar. There will be one combined Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m.

4. Parish Membership - We welcome all our visitors and guests who worship at St. Nicholas. We invite families and individuals who wish to become members to register with us by calling the Church Office at 273-6752, or speaking with Fr. Mikhail after the Church service.

5. Meetings: Our Mother of Perpetual Help Mtg. – will be on Mon., April 16 after Liturgy at 10am.

6. Bequests- In making out your will, remember your St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.

7. From the Pastor's desk - We have mentioned before that many of our parishioners are sick or house-bound. Please remember them in your prayers and try to visit them, or send them a card this Easter. Let us share the Holy Joy of Easter by giving them the Joy of Our Remembrance.

8. Ukrainian Club Meeting – All members of the Ukrainian American Citizens Club in Watervliet are invited to our Monthly Meeting Friday April 20th at 7:30 p.m. New members are Welcome.

9. Soyuz Ukrainok Br. 99 - will hold its monthly meeting on Sunday, 4/22/20 at 10:30 am in the Church Hall. All members are asked to attend.

10. Help the Poor - Today, we pray, “Let the rich and the poor rejoice together this day!” If we give something to the poor, then their joy can be greater. We still have the opportunity to help the poor by placing donations in the carton in the middle of the church.

11. Sacrament of Matrimony - Couples planning to be married should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the proposed date to allow ample time for preparation. No other arrangements should be made before contacting the Church.

12. BAPTISMS - Sacraments of Initiation are normally administered on the Sunday nearest the 40th day after the birth of the child. Clergy will conduct a special baptismal preparation for all expectant parents, Godparents and possibly grand-parents. Parents

must be registered active members of the parish. It is normal that a saint’s name be chosen for the child. GODPARENT ELIGIBILITY - One sponsor must be a practicing Catholic, attend Liturgy regularly, receive the Sacraments & fulfill all obligations and financial support to their parish, attested to by their pastor.

13. Coffee after Sunday Liturgies — you are reminded that coffee and refreshments are being served after both Divine Liturgies to benefit our school programs. Please come downstairs to our social hall and chat with your friends and fellow parishioners.

14. UNA Schoolarship - Ukr. National Association sponsors an Award and Scholarship to UNA student members attending college. Applications are available from Nick Fil 785-7596 or www.UkrainianNationalAssociation.org. Deadline is June 1, 2018.

15. What about CREMATION? Burial is the preferred and traditional Christian funeral practice for both the Latin and the Byzantine Rites of the Catholic Church. In our Ukrainian Catholic Church, although highly discouraged, cremation is permitted for economic reasons, especially if it is NOT being done for anti-Christian reasons. In previous centuries, cremation was practiced by those who rejected faith in the bodily Resurrection of our Lord.

We wish to extend a very sincere thank you to all our hard-working parishioners and friends of the parish who worked so hard for this event. Without all of this generous help and donations, our Easter Bazaar sale would not have been so successful. Also, thank you to all the parishioners that helped with the preparation of the food for the Bazaar, readiness of the hall, serving the food, waiting on customers during the Easter Bazaar and, lastly, cleaning up after both the day of the pyrohy sale and the bazaar. We look forward to working with you again in September!

May our Risen Lord and Savior bless each of you for your kindness, generosity and hard work!

Father Mikhail and the Fundraising Committee

3rd Sunday of Pascha: Sunday of the Myrrhbearing Women Troparion (2): When You went down to death, O Life Immortal,* You struck Hades dead

with the blazing light of Your divinity.* When You raised the dead from the nether world,* all the powers of heaven cried out:* “O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory be to You!”

Troparion (2): The noble Joseph took down Your most pure body from the tree.*He

wrapped it in a clean shroud, and with aromatic spices* and placed it in burial in a new tomb.* But on the third day You arose, O Lord,* granting the world Your great mercy.

+Glory …… Kontakion(2): You commanded the myrrh-bearers to rejoice, O Christ God,*and ended the grief

of our mother Eve by Your resurrection.* You ordered the apostles to proclaim to all:* "The Saviour is risen from the tomb.”

Now and forever… Kontakion (Tone 8): Though You descended into a tomb, O Immortal One,* yet You

destroyed the power of Hades;* and You rose as victor, O Christ God,* calling to the myrrh-bearing women: Rejoice!* and giving peace to Your apostles:* You, who grant Resurrection to the fallen.

Prokimenon (Tone 6): Save Your people, O Lord,* and bless Your inheritance (Ps 27:9).

verse: Unto You I will cry, O Lord my God, lest You turn from me in silence (Ps 27:1).

Epistle (Act 6:1-7): In those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained

against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait at tables. Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word.’ What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

Alleluia (8): You have shown favour to Your land, O Lord; You brought back the captives of Jacob.

verse: Mercy and truth have met; righteousness and peace have embraced (Ps 84:11).

Gospel: (Mark 15:43-16:8): At that time Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was

also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was laid. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.’ So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Communion Verse: Receive the Body of Christ;* taste the fountain of immortality. Alleluia! (3x).

Instead of "Blessed is He..." "We have seen..’ "Let our mouths..."& "Blessed be the name of the Lord...": Christ is risen from the dead, trampling death by death, and to those in the tombs giving life. “Christ is risen” is sung again once instead of “Glory be to the Father…” at the dismissal. Then the Troparion “Christ is risen” is sung as in the beginning of the Liturgy, but with an additional ending. And to us He has granted life eternal;* we bow down before His resurrection on the third day.
