Why does the Church have the tradition of celebrating jubilee years?

It actually dates from the Old Testament, but some of the first jubilees that we have on historical record date to the 15th century when popes have declared jubilees and pilgrimages. The whole idea of the jubilee year is intended to be an opportunity for people not only to reflect upon more Christian-centered themes, but more importantly the idea of pilgrimage. That is, to make a pilgrimage to a holy site. It is not that different from other religions that require their faithful to make pilgrimages to the Holy Land or other sites. It is important for Catholics to remember that while it seems like this is just another year, and it is on a certain level, it should be lived out in an extraordinary way. People make promises and resolutions every year. Why not make this year’s resolution one that seeks to live out mercy in a particular way in 2016? Pope Francis is trying to give all an opportunity to realize and experience God’s mercy in a special way. Once we have experienced God’s mercy, we should share it with others through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. There are many ways we can share God’s mercy, and during this Christmas Season we should consider visiting the sick, lonely, and sometimes forgotten in nursing homes. By showing mercy to others God will return it to us in a bountiful way! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Peter John Sheehan
