What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity ? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.

PARISH EVENTS

Brothers and sisters, I am sad to say this is my last entry in the bulletin. It has been a great 10 years here at St. Patrick! I thank you for all your patience with me as an imperfect person and priest, but espe-cially I want to thank you and almighty God for all the love you have shown me. Honestly I came a bit fearful in 2008 knowing how diverse this parish is in terms of culture and the workload. Yet after 10 years I have come to truly love these very same things—the diverse beauty of you the people and the level of pastoral engagement over the years. There is always something going on here, and for a priest who enjoys being active, it’s a great place to be! I have grown so much through these two things, and for that I am grateful. I also know that the same Good Lord who brought me here for His purpose will continue to form me more into the heart of the Good Shepherd and bless you as He has done for many decades. Fr. James Weldon is a kind, intelligent, (more) experienced pastor, and I have no doubt that the Holy Spirit will work through him at St. Patrick. Fond memories and prayers for you will always remain in my heart no matter where I go. Please do the same for me! In Christ Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and by the intercession of St. Patrick, Good Bye to you and all.

Acts of stewardship are not unlike the seeds scattered in today's reading from Mark. The farmer scattered seeds and left them to sprout and grow until the

time of harvest. Similarly, when we give of ourselves, we allow God to take those "seeds" and cultivate them into a most abundant harvest! In both cases, the process is hidden and mysterious. It is not for us to understand, but it is for us to willingly participate. Additionally, the parable of the mustard seed reminds us that God can take even the smallest acts and turn them into something marvelous. Therefore, be watchful and aware for those opportunities to cooperate with God's plan. Pray that God will reveal them to you!
