ST. PATRICK’S GIVING TREE
Our Christmas Giving Tree has been decorated with gift tags We encourage you to select a gift tag too help us
brighten Christmas for those in need.
Please remember to attach the “GIFT TAG” you have selected to your present and place it under the Giving Tree
on or before Sunday, December 17. This will enable us to deliver the gifts before Christmas. Thank you for
helping us to make Christmas a reflection of the generous Christmas Spirit that is so evident here at St. Patrick’s.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Some years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Fr. Mitch Pacwa of EWTN as he
gave a talk at my home parish of St. Bernadette in Northborough. What proved very interesting is that
somehow, I ended up being his chauffer for the weekend talk. This led us around Worcester itself, and
eventually back to Boston to catch a flight home. One piece of advice that he gave that has really stuck with
me was this: “If the devil can’t corrupt you, he’ll make you busy.”
What he meant by that was that the devil always tempts us toward sinning, but if he can’t get us to do
that, he’ll aim to make us so busy that we do not receive the graces God gives us in order to live our call on
earth. How often has the excuse “I don’t have time” become a staple of all of our vocabularies? Probably
now, more than ever before, the demands on our time have become immense. Smartphones lead to us never
“being off”, and even if it’s not work demanding our attention, how many voluntary distractions do we fill
our time with? With these and an ever increasing list of activities, we can see how easy it is for the grace of
God not to bear fruit and come to nothing in any given day.
So what do we do about this? His advice is the advice I share with you this week: Make sure you take
the time to pray no matter what. Make it a priority to get time with God into your day as this is what truly
sustains.
God Bless,
Fr. Jim
December 10, 2017 — Second Sunday of
Advent
IS 40: 1-5, 9-11; PS 85: 9-14; 2 PT: 3, 8-
14; MK 1: 1-8
Our readings from Holy Scripture on this Second
Sunday of Advent remind us of what we are
supposed to be doing during Advent, in fact
throughout our lives. The reading from Isaiah
anticipates the coming of Christ and John the Baptist
as it proclaims “… prepare the way of the Lord.”
This is a time of preparation for us. That message is repeated in our Gospel from St.
Mark. Today’s Gospel is the absolute beginning of
Mark’s Gospel and it immediately gives us that same
signal by declaring, “Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.” Of course, we all realize
that the path to the Lord may not always be straight
for us, but now is a time to correct that. God is waiting for us. St. Peter in his Second Letter,
from which our Second Reading is drawn, indicates
that God, however, “is patient with you.” You might
say on this Second Sunday of Advent that the Lord is
giving us a second chance to respond to His call. One
of the basics of St. John the Baptist’s messages was
that we need to get ourselves right with the Lord,
perhaps turn our lives in a different direction. We can
change; now is the time to do that. Pope St. John XXIII once stated during a homily in
Advent, “We are all part of an immense family. This
is proven by what is in our hearts during Advent and
Christmas.” Now is the time to put love in our hearts
and to truly prepare the way of the Lord.
Cold Consideration: If you are not
feeling well or think you may be coming down with an airborne illness like a cold or the flu, please take appropriate steps to contain the spread of germs. Cover your mouth when you are coughing or sneezing. Be aware of those around you. Use a hand sanitizer to help avoid the spread of germs. Remember, if you are ill, the obligation to attend mass is lifted.
2nd Sunday in Advent!!
“Prepare the way of the Lord…” (MARK 1:3) We are
all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite
others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle,
being grateful and generous with our gifts, does just
that – it puts us on the path to holiness and it invites
others to be holy, too.
